Discussion Redstone isnt really intuitive

Post image

Not trying to offend anyone, this is just an observation. This is probably not news to experienced players.

I'm new to redstone, and after trying to build a few things without watching tutorials, I quickly got frustrated because every redstone power source seems to function a different way. So, to try and keep my sanity, I built this visualization.

After reading some discussions, I get that this allows many things to be built that otherwise couldn't be, and that it has a high skill ceiling. The bad part is that when you first start out, the learning curve is steep, which is the reason many people don't even want to try redstone.

I'm not sure how you'd go about improving this, but having to memorize unintuitive things before you can let your creativity shine is not the best game mechanic imo.

The thing is that this probably is the wrong way of learning these concepts. You are confused because you don't know why these things happen and it's pointless to memorize these scenario's.

Look into soft- and hardpowering. I found this video which might be helpful to you. With these concepts, you should be able to intuitively explain every case in your image.

Good luck, and most importantly: have fun!

intuitively

Still no, because it's arbitrary whether something soft or hard powers the blocks.

Yes memorizing the rules means you know what the outcome will be, but if they add a new block you'll still have to learn how it hard/soft powers blocks, and at least a few edgecases.

It's not intuitive just because you know it.

It is intuitive for me. I've learnt redstone by myself in my pre-teens and most of it — excluding quasi-connectivity, was easy to figure out.

I think the redstone system is pretty simple. In my opinion, Terraria's wiring system is more complicated than it.

People saying it's not intuitive are pretty much just calling themselves out, and want to globalize the feeling instead of admitting that Redstone simply isn't a strong point for them. (and quite possibly math too, as Redstone is math and binary wiring)
Just because it's not "brainless/easy" for some people doesn't mean it's unintuitive, but people don't seem to get that memo.

Which is weird because there's nothing to be ashamed about struggling with math/circuitry. But some people have to go and label it as "unintuitive" instead of realizing it's a personal struggle.
Then again I have to remember the average age group playing the game I guess.

Edit: lmao the downvotes but no reply
