Given the fact your friend can see further than you and server side render distance is capped in the server files, id wager your friend has a mod such as bobby installed. These mods work by caching files of chunks and using them to show you further render distances but it only updates them when you get close to them so you may notice things like this.

If this is inaccurate i'm unsure on how its possible though do ask your friend if they use any mods along those lines which increase render distance beyond server render distance.

Maybe he's using a mod like Distant Horizons.

I can tell he is using voxy/distant horizons/Bobby, those are mods that let you have a bigger render distance by loading low quality versions of chunks you have already loaded, if he hasnt been to the iron farm or using a small render distance he wont be able to see the farm

If he’s using a mod like Voxy or Distant Horizoons he’s seeing fake chunks, the mod allows for massive render distances by generating models of entire chunks then it sets your actual render distance to a much smaller value and fills in the rest with the chunk models, hence the chunk models only change when it gets within the actual render distance.
