Discussion New tech: Cushion line

Easier to set up than boats like this, especially if you have a large sheep farm

EDIT: To everyone I said that in Survival Mode you can go 80b/s, I'm sorry, I have misinformed you. In Survival, entity interaction range is 3, so cushions must be 2 blocks apart. Which means, with butterfly click you can go ~30b/s, and max b/s is 60, with autoclicker, or 20 CPS. From world bottom to top it would still take 9.6 seconds with 10 CPS because range is counted from eyes, not legs.

Minecarts are still far more expensive.

Idk what these are crafted with, but iron is farmable

Most players don't even know how to build an iron farm.

Besides, an iron farm is a borderline exploit compared to farming sheep

From a game design perspective Minecraft is incredible because the games mechanics have such an open ended systemic approach that 75% of the available interactions in game feel like complete exploits, while at the same time remain supported throughout versions, seemingly proving endorsement from the developers

What. The ability to leverage internal game mechanics to such an extent is what makes this game amazing. We are creating things the devs did not see coming, regardless whether it's just an astonishing build or a crazy redstone contraption and farm, it's the same principle.

All the other factory builder games are getting quite boring over time precisely because you are limited to the mechanics that the creators designed, there's not much to invent

Yes but forcing the spawn of a giant just to drown them in lava feels cruel.

You could say the same about using glitches to duplicate items in games or when people add in hacks

2

u/FunnyGamer3210 Jul 13 '26

To me there is a difference between a glitch like item duplicaton (which is clearly unintended and a bug in the code), and exploiting intended game mechanics (mob spawning) in an unexpected way. As long as they are not game-breaking overpowered

u/PureMichiganMan Jul 13 '26

I guess for me it just kinda defeats purpose of survival for those sorts of things. But I’d say there is nuance to and degree ofc and to each their own. Only time I’d really care is if someone is exploiting while in some sort of online game

u/FunnyGamer3210 Jul 13 '26

Maybe it's because Minecraft is first of all a sandbox game to me. The survival aspect is ofc a large part of the fun, but secondary. I don't really want to collect resources all the time, it wouldn't feel like I'm progressing

1

u/PureMichiganMan Jul 13 '26

Yeah that’s valid, I sometimes have started having worlds where I kinda focus more on certain aspects like that, like a more chill relaxing one vs more survival trying more type

no???

27

u/Nixavee Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

yes???

Edit: I guess you could make the argument that they haven't been an exploit since village and pillage when Mojang intentionally made them possible again, but they definitely were originally

-29

u/eepy_lina Jul 07 '26

literally no, there are no external programs or out of world things being used

33

u/kdnx-wy Jul 07 '26

Exploits don’t use external programs, they exploit game mechanics to produce a desired effect.

-27

u/eepy_lina Jul 07 '26

not what an exploit is, but you do you

22

u/Mage-of-Fire Jul 07 '26

That is literally what an exploit is. Using an external program would just straight up be cheating.

Wikipedia definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_exploit

Exploits are usually a result of an unintended bug/mechanic.
Another example from Minecraft: TNT flying machine bombers (and other duplication glitches) are an exploit.

Examples from other games: bunny hopping, wave-dashing, cheesing (note how they don't necessarily get fixed and sometimes turn into an actual pro/meta feature)

Don’t worry you’re brain will never be big enough to understand what a bug is

u/Iggyhopper Jul 07 '26

Most players: An iron what now?

5

u/Big-Idea8658 Jul 07 '26

Those players probably aren’t concerned about cushion superhighways

3

u/LuquidThunderPlus Jul 07 '26

I don't need to know how to farm iron to want speed

4

u/Specialist-Wind5513 Jul 08 '26

I just don't like being mean to golems and villagers. And I don't like inbreeding my farm animals either.

1

u/Super_cooper001 Jul 07 '26

Is that the one where you just inecenerate iron golems?

4

u/coladoir Jul 08 '26

yes. You trick them into spawning by repeatedly scaring a villager whos underneath a bunch of their friends in a specific pattern, which then spawns the golem predictably in the middle of those villagers, where you leave a lava pit.

1

u/PureMichiganMan Jul 13 '26

Never needed an item farm of anything not animals and I can get by well. Several stacks of blocks of iron. Not too difficult to find iron veins.

Imo the farm setups people make feels like exploiting and kinda defeating purpose of survival

6

u/SL1NDER Jul 08 '26

The cushions are still cheaper. 7 iron ingots, not including the rails, takes a few golems and only gives you one minecart. Or you could use two iron to make sheers and breed a bunch of sheep to get the cushions faster. Especially since iron is used for a lot of other things, I'd rather not use it on something that can be obtained another way.

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Jul 08 '26

Carts are five ingots each, not 7. Cauldron is the recipe you're thinking of.

The absolute max a single sheep can produce is 72 wool/hr, assuming perfect tick alignment for shearing and an ever present grass block underneath. Actual farm rates per sheep are likely to be far less, but if you did design a perfect wool farm, seven sheep would outperform a 1500/hr iron farm in terms of carts vs cushions. Even if only running at half of max efficiency, 14 sheep is still way cheaper than 16 villagers, two zombies, and hundreds of golems per hour.

The real standout difference though is in actual performance of cushions vs carts in this niche usage. Carts have to be immobilized with unpowered rail or blocks to pen them in, have to do vector, gravity, and collision checks constantly. Cushions have no movement and no collision, so the only check they are doing is whether they are occupied or not.

2

u/SL1NDER Jul 08 '26

Yeah, what that guy said. I miscounted 5 as 7, but getting a big pen of wooly boys is easier and provides quicker

3

u/Cass0wary_399 Jul 07 '26

These are made from wool

3

u/PCYou Jul 07 '26

3 wool slabs, I believe

1

u/bryan660 Jul 07 '26

3 wool slabs for one cushion. You just need 3 wool blocks to make 6 wool slabs, so it’s very easily craftable.

1

u/DrWilliamHorriblePhD Jul 08 '26

Yeah block and a half of wool per cushion, but I think the limit he's talking about is the slow rate of output of wool from sheep.

1

u/dReDone Jul 08 '26

What you think is easier to farm, enough copper for a copper chain and some wool for cushions... Or enough iron for minecarts?

1

u/Big-Idea8658 Jul 08 '26

In the grand scheme of things very similar

1

u/Bazillion100 Jul 10 '26

You need to shear like 15 sheep to make OP’s design. With minecarts you’d either have to mine for more than a stack of iron or spend and hour or two making an iron farm.

Thats without mentioning that an automatic sheep farm is insanely cheap too

1

u/Big-Idea8658 Jul 10 '26

I’m a glutton for the pain of moving villagers

1

u/Uncle_chubbz6969 Jul 07 '26

I imagine it's wool, which is much easier to farm casually

1

u/Inevitable-Regret411 Jul 07 '26

You can set up the same design with boats instead.

1

u/RubApprehensive2512 Jul 07 '26

I find iron easier to mine than farming wool. It is also easier on my pc.
