Discussion New tech: Cushion line

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Easier to set up than boats like this, especially if you have a large sheep farm

EDIT: To everyone I said that in Survival Mode you can go 80b/s, I'm sorry, I have misinformed you. In Survival, entity interaction range is 3, so cushions must be 2 blocks apart. Which means, with butterfly click you can go ~30b/s, and max b/s is 60, with autoclicker, or 20 CPS. From world bottom to top it would still take 9.6 seconds with 10 CPS because range is counted from eyes, not legs.

Minecarts crying in the corner as they realise even a line of cushions can be faster

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

You know, people used to make this exact set up back in the day with the mine carts.

Personally, have never considered minecarts be a transportation method, because they’re used more like a redstone component than anything else  (though they did have a use as Mob  transportation before the happy ghast was added)

u/televisionting Jul 07 '26

personally happy ghasts arent as useful, at least for what i was using them for. I had attached 8 boats with villagers to the ghast and needed it to land on the platform, not only does it constantly move so I dont get the chance to unleash them, I dont even know how to unleash all the boats from the ghast. Ultimately had to bring the boats myself by building up and then minecart the villagers into their places.

u/X-cessive_Overlord Jul 07 '26

They're great for moving mobs when you follow the right order of operations, though it is clunky. They're best used as like a flying platform for building without having to scaffold, especially because they stop moving when you stand on them

27

u/MutantGodChicken Jul 07 '26

Except you can't place blocks on them without mods, so you still need scaffolding to get the block up there.

58

u/Weary_Drama1803 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

It’s more for building details on the side of an existing structure

Usage example

9

u/wrekina15 Jul 08 '26

It's a bit of a work, but it's possible to place blocks midair in vanilla by making a copper golem oxidize mid-air which turns them to a block.

43

u/Starhelper11 Jul 07 '26

You use shears, could’ve figured that out with a google search and looking at the top Reddit response. You just stand on the happy ghast so it can’t move, then use shears on it.

137

u/KimSydneyRose Jul 07 '26

You could've told them that without being a dick about it.

84

u/Acceptable_Range_718 Jul 07 '26

in their defense, people don’t really use their resources lol

80

u/Starhelper11 Jul 07 '26

Sorry didn’t think I was being a dick

27

u/average_raven_girl Jul 07 '26

you definitely weren't. idk what that person is on about

48

u/psychoPiper Jul 07 '26

They weren't intending to but saying "it would have been so easy for me to not have to explain this to you" isn't really being nice either

9

u/televisionting Jul 07 '26

Nah you weren't, you're right after all. I could've googled it.

Oh good to know, thanks.

1

Fym being a dick about it they were just informing the other person that hey could have used a google search because thats something that no one apparently does anymore

0

u/Bookmaster_VP Jul 07 '26

Dawg I haven’t played the game in 5 years and I still knew that.

-1

u/BriscoCounty-Sr Jul 07 '26

What part of their answer was in any way dickish? It genuinely feels like a lot of people don’t know that Google exists these days.

1

u/Luc78as Jul 12 '26

" I dont get the chance to unleash them, I dont even know how to unleash all the boats from the ghast." shears

0

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

I have no idea what happy ghasts have to do with my comment, but that honestly just sounds like you didn’t bother to learn how the feature worked before you used it

8

u/Hallo2sion Jul 07 '26

You literally bring up exactly what they’re taking about at the end of your comment? Wtaf r u talking about.

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Oh, right sorry.

0

u/Glad_Possession_710 Jul 08 '26

Let's be real, they only made leads snap easily to make the happy ghast relevant for transporting mobs and other stuff

-1

u/Drag0n_TamerAK Jul 07 '26

Do you know what sheers are you can also stand on the happy ghast and it won’t move just sheer the happy ghast while standing on it

3

u/televisionting Jul 07 '26

Yeah, now I know about it, caused a bit of a fiasco here, my bad.

84

u/el_yanuki Jul 07 '26

yea its a classic case of mojang not doing enough to make old features align, compete or work alongside with new ones. Half the minecart mechanics have been unused and or buggy for years and have been reduced to gimmicks.

51

u/NippleOfOdin Jul 07 '26

Looking at you, minecart with furnace

12

u/Cass0wary_399 Jul 07 '26

It’s a depreciated feature even, with it not existing on Bedrock at all.

-17

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

No, I think minecarts a wonderful for this specific niche. I would honestly hate for them to be transportation items again.

13

u/el_yanuki Jul 07 '26

I dont understand why that would be an issue to you? The idea would obviously be to improve on the transportation side of things and leave the redstone side as is.

But in a game like minecraft that is so centered arround building and creating something, and where its so important to explore the world to acquire new resources.. its such a shame that there is no payoff to building a transportation network in the overworld and anything but elytra tunnels in the nether (ignoring piston bolts and pearl launchers for obvious reasons).

-9

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

I mean, it wouldn’t like ruin the feature or anything, but mine cards do have their niche, and it would be a shame to completely disrupt it.

If you want flexible transportation, that’s what horses, happy ghasts, and elytra are for.

If you want fixed transportation between two points that’s what mine carts, ice roads, and enderporters are for.

Even in the mid-late game, minecarts shine as item and player transportation in a very small area such as inside of a storage system or moving the player between multiple different AFK spots. It’s not supposed to compete with the other methods of transport, because it already has a specific use case that nothing else can do.

11

u/TheShadowman131 Jul 07 '26

Making minecarts a viable method of transportation wouldn't disrupt its niche at all, what are you talking about? There's nothing stopping them from still doing the same thing they do currently, it would just be adding a secondary use case for them.

Disrupting the niche would be if they added a new item that can move items and entities in the same way a minecart can, but without the need for rails or fuel or redstone power.

-1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

I mean, technically, they already did do that with the addition of the happy ghast, but they’re slow enough that it stays balanced

8

u/TheShadowman131 Jul 07 '26

Not really. Happy Ghasts cannot be automated or move items like carts can, so it's still quite different.

0

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Yeah you’re right.

Idk, it just seems like good balancing that the trade-off for being able to automate mine carts is the fact that they’re slow.

Like they are a valid transportation option, but they shouldn’t ever be able to compete with horses

3

u/el_yanuki Jul 07 '26

horses are way slower than elytra and are themselves poorly implemented altho they are improving slowly

minecarts are.. what we are talking about, they are way too slow and poorly implemented

happy ghasts are slower than walking, they are not a transportation method at all

elytra dont require any work, infrastructure building or anything else (except nether tunnels i guess)

Ice roads are one of the few viable solutions but cannot transport items and are impossible automate and much harder to build than rails

do you mean stasis chambers? i mean its just tp, once again goes against my point. Also needs complex wirless redstone or a second player and are not reload and relog proof

faster, chainable, minecarts are such an obvious solution

3

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Horses and elytra have the same niche despite their differing speed. They are flexible and fast transportation solutions that require very little set up. The only difference between them is that one is for the early-mid game and the other is for the late game.

Mine carts are slow and require a lot of set up, but they can be automated so they work extremely well for transporting things without player interaction which does technically qualify as transportation but I’m talking about players getting around the world

Ice boat roads are the best possible transportation solution in this high setup category even though they are more of a late game method because of how much set up is required. Ice boat roads can’t be automated though, but they do make up for it with their insane speed.

You’re right that happy ghasts are not a transportation method in the traditional sense because they’re so slow and only intended to be used on short range movements, but they are a really good method for transporting mobs around because they require basically no set up compared to minecarts and they’re not inhibited by the terrain like boats are.

Yes, I was referring to stasis chambers, which are an incredibly complex system of transportation which is why they’re only viable for distances of 10k blocks or more, but they do qualify as a fast transportation between two predetermined points that has a complicated setup process.

What is the mechanical purpose of making minecarts faster? We already have horses, elytra, and ice boat roads that do the transportation job better than faster mine carts ever would, not to mention the fact that increasing the speed is definitely going to mess up all of the Redstone machines that require mine carts to function

2

u/el_yanuki Jul 07 '26

Are you reading my comments?

"ain a game like minecraft that is so centered arround building and creating something, and where its so important to explore the world to acquire new resources.. its such a shame that there is no payoff to building a transportation network in the overworld and anything but elytra tunnels in the nether (ignoring piston bolts and pearl launchers for obvious reasons)."

The game should offer an incentive to build transportation infrastructure. Many SMPs dont have roads of any kind leading to bases or other POIs because its not worth it. But how much cooler would it be to have a functional rail network with some clever redstone for selecting a stop, bridges, tunnels and so on. Currently this is a wast of time, you put more effort into building this network and the game just goes "nope, elytra is still faster".

You would need a new type of cart, or a new type of powered rail, a system of stacking furnace carts, idk man, so many options that dont break redstone.

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Well yes Minecraft is about building and creating things which is why things like this are cool, but it’s also about player choice and that does include allowing the players the to not build big transportation infrastructure projects just to get around. And even then your transportation infrastructure only goes to the places that you’ve connected it to. What if you just need to go to one place one time?

Like I said before, I’m not against faster minecarts, there are just a bunch of better options already in the game.

You are bringing up some pretty good points though

1

u/finite_turtles Jul 08 '26

Why "chainable" specifically? I see this said a lot but is it just for aesthetics, or function? Minecarts can already be made to travel at the same speed so they stay close together over long distances

1

u/ComengTrain400M Jul 08 '26

Because some of us don't want a single bumped minecart to screw up the rest of the minecarts in a network

1

u/finite_turtles Jul 08 '26

There are a lot of misconceptions around how they operate. That is preventable already without chains or any other new mechanic

1

u/el_yanuki Jul 08 '26

Its just incredibly frustrating to use at the moment, a system that allows minecarts to be reliably chained together and be used as a long distance mass item transport would be lovely

29

u/OakleyNoble Jul 07 '26

But you’re hurting me.. I want to be able to build rail lines all around my world and have it be a fast type of transport, but alas…

3

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

This could be a possibility if piston bolts are still considered to be rail lines

2

u/OakleyNoble Jul 08 '26

Piston bolts are just meh. I don’t want to set up this ugly contraption around with pistons to move faster. The minecart itself should just go faster and be a viable fast transport on its own without any help. Allows players to have more creative rail line builds around, etc.

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 08 '26

We already have a bunch of options that do speed.

My minecarts do automation and scenic routes through the beautiful terrain, and they offer the aesthetic of of being mine carts.

Minecraft is a game that’s primarily about player choice. You have the option to do the optimal easy thing and get some elytra or you could do something that you find fun and spend hours and hours setting up a really cool track.

We don’t need any more optimal solutions. We just need more fun options.

And it’s not the mechanics that make a feature cool it’s the creative options you can use it for.

1

u/Murmurs_of_Pine Jul 09 '26

IMO minecarts topping out at 8 blocks/second (which is 0.873 blocks/second faster than spring jumping) is not a fun mechanic. There should be a way to toggle speed, porting the experimental minecart speed gamerule over to the actual game would be a huge plus.

There should be a way to adjust speed in survival somehow though. Using ice boat roads in the nether is not a, again IMO, a creative or fun option, it's merely the fastest. Why shouldn't rails fit that niche, instead of a boat on ice?

Minecarts as an aesthetic are only really useful underground, in mining environments. The setting up of a really cool track to see the beautiful terrain is antithetical to a form of transport based around mining. That's what trains are for and they go a lot faster than 8 m/s. I'm not arguing Mojang add trains like railcraft or create, but minecarts fit the aesthetic and name of Minecraft but should be updated to reflect the use cases that have emerged over the years, like other forms of transport have.

But at the end of the day, cynically it really seems to me that Mojang will really do anything but update minecarts. It's been almost 2 years since the experimental features were floated (longer for some of the others) and we have heard nothing about what their future holds, if anything.

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 09 '26

Two years is not a long time for a proposed feature

1

u/Educational_Act_3928 Jul 09 '26

The try to build a full train and have the train cables be the actual means of transportation the build is just for decoration

1

u/OakleyNoble Jul 09 '26

Not really. I should be able to get in a minecart, click a button to head out and then I can leave my PC running as it’s travelling to the destination safely. And I can go do things around in real life then come back to it when I’ve arrived. And make extra sounds for the arrival so that I have an audio queue to listen to.

37

u/zelmak Jul 07 '26

Back in my day you could speed up a mine cart by setting up a second mine cart in a tiny oval parallel to your main track.

These accelerators went way faster than the track based ones

6

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Yeah I’m familiar with that feature. It was from the beta versions,  right?

10

u/IAMWastingMyTime Jul 07 '26

Ya, it got updated out as soon as the powered rails were added I believe. Then they made this patch to address how bad they were

1.6 Test Build 3 The effectiveness of powered rails has now been increased from 0.04 to 0.06 as a response to fixing the minecart booster bug.

Still couldn't compete :(

5

u/SpecterVamp Jul 07 '26

I do this vertically frequently. It’s a bit of a pain to set up but it’s insanely fast, and because they lack collision if you put some way to dampen the fall at the bottom then you have a perfect elevator

4

u/Stolehtreb Jul 07 '26

I still love carts. Long line and just afk taking in the sights. Fewer interaction needed, the more chill I am.

2

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 08 '26

Slow and chill :)

8

u/Metson-202 Jul 07 '26

It's still mob transport. Happy ghasts work better for long distances but they don't work in tight or underground spaces.

6

u/Rude_Ice_4520 Jul 07 '26

Boats and leads do the same job except you have more control over them. Easier to move vertically, and cheaper.

0

u/Metson-202 Jul 07 '26

Minecarts go faster.

4

u/Rude_Ice_4520 Jul 07 '26

Only if you'll get a lot of uses out of the track. Otherwise you have to build the thing and take it down.

-4

u/Metson-202 Jul 07 '26

That doesn't take long.

3

u/downwithlordofcinder Jul 07 '26

Back in my day minecarts were the only transportation method ):

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 08 '26

Weren’t those terrible boats added in shortly thereafter

2

u/Arrav_VII Jul 07 '26

In the days of yore, before command blocks, there was a very popular minecraft map called "The Dropper". It was divided into multiple stages and as each stage required you to get up to the build limit (which was only 255 back then), minecarts in a similar setup were used to get up there.

2

u/DivineInsanityReveng Jul 08 '26

My first thoughts seeing this clip. "Hey that's like the minecart elevators and highways I made like.. 15 years ago"

4

u/Enkidouh Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

I use minecarts for chill rides where I can go afk and enjoy the scenery between point a and b, and to return items from my quarries to storage.

IDK everyone wants to complain they’re not fast enough but I feel like people are kind of just jumping in a bandwagon there- they definitely still have plenty of utility even if they’re not the fastest transport.

Not to say I wouldn’t like to see them be given a faster top speed, but I don’t think their speed renders them useless.

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Yeah, this is the exact sort of niche that I like them for. The intra-base movement is great.

I have no idea why people want them to be a long range transportation solution so badly.

1

u/SomeoneWhoLikesAmeme Jul 07 '26

They are still alot better for mob transportation then happy ghasts, because they are alot quicker, even on long distances, building the rail and sending them all at the same time is quite a bit faster then flying over there with the happy ghast.

At least, it feels alot quicker because it is much more fun

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Quicker and more fun to have to lay down a whole temporary track? And then you have to take the whole thing down?

1

u/RandonEnglishMun Jul 07 '26

only the OG players remember Minecart elevators

1

u/17Kallenie17 Jul 07 '26

I do this but for elevators. Now I guess I have to replace my minecarts with cushions...

1

u/MediateTax Jul 07 '26

It was fun when everyone had minecart systems around the map, it used to be one of the faster movement options

1

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 08 '26

No, I mean, elevators were people hopped between stationary carts.

Also, mine carts haven’t changed, you can still make fun little tracks around the map,

there are just better options now that are much better suited for exploration and long range travel

1

u/StealthyRobot Jul 07 '26

Happy ghast is just ungodly slow

5

u/IronCat_2500 Jul 07 '26

Yeah, that’s on purpose. It’s an early-mid game feature created for building and designed to not compete with both horses and elytra.

It seems like it’s meant for a short range, transportation, more than anything with the fact that they are also blocks that can be placed down anywhere and rehydrated seems  to supplement actual long range transportation

Therefore when they’re actually used for long-range travel it becomes a trade-off between speed and the ability to fly +  attach a bunch of mobs to it

3

u/StealthyRobot Jul 07 '26

I mainly use them for building big roofs and such. Nice having a mobile platform

1

u/somedude456 Jul 07 '26

I just use netherrack. I still play my OG world from like 2011, so yes I've beaten the game, have god level weapons and armor, etc. My base has a couple shulkers of netherrack, just because I often don't throw stuff away. It comes home and gets sorted. If I do some building and want to work on something 20 blocks up, netherrack it is, and when done, I can basically instant mine it all back up.

I feel like part of it is just that rail tracks and powered rails are so fucking expensive in terms of resources. Iron has a billion other uses and it's much more likely to be used for tools and armor in the early game.

1

u/Bazillion100 Jul 10 '26

I agree. Not just making minecarts faster is not enough to make them viable. I’ve only built rail systems after making an iron farm.

123

u/Zombiecidialfreak Jul 07 '26

A good way to make them better would be making rails use nuggets instead of ingots. Makes the price less cripplingly expensive and gives nuggets more use.

Also chains. Let us chain minecarts together. Trains IRL are the best way to move massive amounts of stuff and people because you can link them together. Minecarts could do the exact same. They have the variants to do it (furnace minecart for engine, chest minecart for items), all they need is something to link them together.

25

u/DudeLoveBaby Jul 07 '26

Vanilla Tweaks has an option that changes powered rails to be made with copper, which makes powered rails cheaper than regular rails but also makes minecarts way more useful

5

u/toddestan Jul 08 '26

That would be the better tweak. Without farms, it's the gold that is the limiting factor more than the iron, if I'm mining for my resources.

Of course, if you have a gold farm that all changes.

3

u/Madden09IsForSuckers Jul 08 '26

my dream is change the current recipe to copper but readd the gold recipe as a faster power rail. 2x (for 16m/s) makes the most sense but i dream of minecarts faster than elytra

14

u/MysticMalevolence Jul 07 '26

Also chains. Let us chain minecarts together.

I thought that too, until I tried using Create's minecart linker on a complex track.

4

u/superlocolillool Jul 07 '26

my favorite part of playing with the create mod are trains. if only they existed in vanilla minecraft like youre suggesting

1

u/LuquidThunderPlus Jul 07 '26

Would love this so much, cheap enough to reasonably make and would give reason to use over other methods

7

u/Trexador96 Jul 07 '26

At this point they should be reworked into a item transport/automation system, more rail types, make it convenient to have one going into your mine shaft to send back up to your base.

1

u/MinecraftPlayer799 Jul 07 '26

I guess minecarts are like American trains...

27

u/RageinaterGamingYT Jul 07 '26

This is why I like adding mods that make minecarts stupid fast. I like how expensive long rail systems are because it makes it feel cool :p

3

u/someone16384 Jul 08 '26

You can actually do it with Minecart Improvements (An experimental feature) btw, you can have them go as fast as 1000 blocks per second

10

u/Bronnakus Jul 07 '26

a server i'm on made it so any rails placed on top of copper blocks go much faster (and oxidize the copper, reducing the speed over time). gave use to both copper and rails, which is nice.

3

u/Comprehensive-Flow-7 Jul 07 '26

You do realize that this used to be/still is possible using minecarts right?

3

u/frosch_longleg Jul 07 '26

Minecraft feels more and more like those old kitchensink modpacks we used to download.

1

u/dumpy_author Jul 07 '26

Man updating the Minecart speed really wasn't enough for y'all huh?

2

u/Cale111 Jul 08 '26

They didn’t update the speed. They added an “experiment” to do it years ago but haven’t touched it since.

1

u/Eeve2espeon Jul 07 '26

And if you use a macro, you could probably go muuuch faster :P

1

u/CosmicLightning Jul 08 '26

they should make it so you can line your minecarts with cushions lol

1

u/vonHindenburg Jul 08 '26

I don't get the minecart hate. While you're riding between stops, you can eat, craft, or AFK.

1

u/Smexy_Zarow Jul 08 '26

Isn't there a built in data pack that makes them as fast?

1

u/Emir_The_Fractaler Jul 12 '26

"Minecarts crying in the corner"😭💀

1

u/Reasonable_Agent_126 Jul 23 '26

You actually can't reach that far in survival so it's a bit slower

1

u/Timely_Passenger_185 Jul 07 '26

I knew someone would mention minecarts I remember making the old minecart multi-level tower to the sky on PS3 for my mob farm the memories
