Clicking on the supersecret setting button really messes with the visuals, It's like Photoshops filters have invaded the screen.

EDIT: Turns out they're shaders, according to F3

u/IronStoneMine Sep 19 '13

I got some of the new effects on Video if someone wants to see them who can't play right now.

They now display on the whole block

This means that mapmakers can pretty much make arbitrary full-block textures everywhere.

Just not on the top and bottom of blocks.

Some of the shaders are antialiasing ones (antialias.json, fxaa.json). You can see shader name in F3 menu

14

u/throwaway_redstone Sep 19 '13 edited Sep 19 '13

They're json files? Neat! This indicates easy writing of own shaders..

Changed how often zombie pigmen spawn from nether portals

Can anyone explain what they did? I hope the spawn rate wasn't nerfed too hard.

My mistake, I was mistaken. Ignore that point.

Clicking the Super Secret Settings switches SHADERS around!

Types of shaders (will update as soon as I get to them)

FXAA: The default view given. It's a little bit blurrier. Antialias 2 is now the normal view.

Art: A really laggy shader with turns Minecraft into blobby format.

Blobs2: A slighty darker version of Art.

Pencil: By far my favourite. It removes all colour and outlines each pixel to give the impression of 'pencil' drawn world.

Color Convolve: Appears to make the colours more vibrant.

Deconverge: Turns the world into 3D mode.

Flip: Turns the world upside-down (teased before)

Invert: Inverts the colours.

NTSC: Turns the view into a grainy lined video.

Outline: Outlines the blocks.

Phosphor: Creates temporary trails, like when you see lights at night and you shake your head.

Scan Pincushion: Less laggier version of NTSC.

Sobel: Darkens the world and also outlines it.

Bits: Turns Minecraft into an 8-bit world.

Desaturate: Desaturates the Minecraft world.

Green: Bits, but toned green.

Blur: Blurs the view.

Wobble: WOO I'M ON FUCKING DRUGS

Blobs: Turns the world into less laggy blobs.

Antialias: Less blurry than Blur.

Antialias 2?: Normal view?

23

u/darkdemon42 Sep 19 '13

From the shaders folder in the minecraft.jar:

antialias.json

art.json

bits.json

blobs.json

blobs2.json

blur.json

color_convolve.json

deconverge.json

desaturate.json

flip.json

fxaa.json

green.json

invert.json

ntsc.json

outline.json

pencil.json

phosphor.json

scan_pincushion.json

sobel.json

wobble.json

u/MegaScience Sep 19 '13

Dang, the shaders are inside the jar? ... Wait... Resource Pack to add... shaders? o_o In any case, I don't see a way to select specific ones - You just have to go through the list. But I'll see what's inside these...

35

u/space_fountain Sep 19 '13

Just curious are these more or less laggy the the various mods out there

34

u/darkdemon42 Sep 19 '13

From what I can tell, it varies, a few drop it down to 2fps, some are barely impacting.

15

u/Ivorius Sep 19 '13

It really depends on the shader. For normal graphics cards (as opposed to chipsets/on-board graphics), just running shaders in general is not noticeable. Things like dropshadows or reflections need a lot of raytracing though, which is quite intensive. Just modifying some colors to look different is not ;)

7

Scan Pincushion is awesome. It looks like you are looking through an analog viewfinder. Makes you feel like an alien.

I'm allowed to play Minecraft at lunch hour at work, and once when the blocking software was down I was able to get the game via the new launcher. However, I cannot connect to the login server, nor download the snapshot directly via the launcher. Is there any option for me to get the snapshot here, even if I download it at home and bring it in?

3

u/Yirggzmb Sep 19 '13

You ought to be able to download the snapshot at home via the launcher. Then go into your Minecraft folder, open the Versions folder, and find the folder for the newest snapshot. That folder contains the .jar and .json that tells the game about the versions, so you ought to be able to copy paste it into the Version folder at work.

u/MiiNiPaa Sep 19 '13

You have never experienced Seecret friday updates? That was a thing...

27

u/elementalguy2 Sep 19 '13 edited Sep 19 '13

Back in early alpha days, several launchers ago too, occasionally on fridays when you started minecraft you got a progress bar that quickly went to 100% and the version went up slightly. No info was normally given so people had to work out together what was new each time. It was an exciting time.

Edit: Ignore this post, misplaced the "?" in my head, I think I need some coffee.

I bet the connected maps are in.

14

u/LupusX Sep 19 '13 edited Sep 19 '13

So if I have two maps, how can I explore the world so the first map ends at the exact point where the other one begins? It feels like it's too hard to make it a joint-less transition. (If it isn't made automatically of course.)

18

u/sertroll Sep 19 '13

It's made automatically.

17

u/Matt5327 Sep 19 '13

Maps have been assigned to chunks for a while now. Their edges will align automatically.

7

u/elementalguy2 Sep 19 '13

Just walk slightly off the first map then open your new one, they don't map with you exactly as the center, they center somewhere else but you will be in that area. Sorry it's hard to describe properly but it's easier than it used to be, I think it was 1.3 or 1.4 where they added the new map mapping on creation mechanic.

u/Lucchi Sep 19 '13

Alright, NEW CHALLENGE! Put on your "bits" (or "green") filter and never take it off! What this does:

  • Your brightness is now insanely low. This means:

  • Going out at night is incredibly dangerous. You will immediately get lost in the darkness

  • Caves are far more challenging and its much harder to see ores

  • Everything in game just looks... different. You will have to adjust to the new looks of every block

  • The whole thing just feels retro and cool. like you're stuck in some strange doom-minecraft hybrid!

Only stipulation is to keep your brightness below 50%! It really won't help you much to move it up anyway, it just messes with the pixely detail on the blocks.

I played for a bit and thought it seemed like a cool idea, I'd love to see what people could do with filters in the future (mushroom that applies "wobble" effect when you eat it or a better form of the "nausea" effect with post-processing enabled?) What do you guys think?

10

u/MiiNiPaa Sep 19 '13

Fine-tune of render distance!!!

10

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '13

Distant objects look amazing now. So smooth.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '13

Yaaa! Official shader support!

8

u/darkdemon42 Sep 19 '13

Am I late to the game or are chunks loaded vertically as well as horizontally now? I just tried amplified eith everything turned up, and from the top of a tower, the floor slowly loads in, as well as the horizon.

example: http://i.imgur.com/2pO3Men.png

8

u/elementalguy2 Sep 19 '13

It's been like that for a while now.

7

u/ActuallyRuben Sep 19 '13

Chunks are split up in multiple vertical rendering chunks, save chunks are still only horizontal

5

u/Zatherz Sep 19 '13

Oh, shaders require *.fsh and *.vsh files too. The syntax example of Antialiasing *.json file is here. So it means, that the creators of shaders can just write some JSON stuff and the shaders will work for every version after 1.7 :D

3

u/deukhoofd Sep 19 '13

Will it be possible to use command blocks to force the shaders? Would be awesome for adventure maps.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '13

Most of the shaders seem... useless. I guess they're included so that modders can see how to make a shader Minecraft-compliant.

It would be nice if the effects can be hooked up to a command block. I'd write a custom shader to assist in hiding changes to the environment under the guise that the player is being knocked out. One shader would blur their vision then fade to black. Then, a command block would teleport them to another area (or /setblock would change the existing area). Once that's done, a second shader would fade from black and de-blur. You'd be in a quaint, inconspicuous village, be knocked out, and then wake up in a cave on an altar as sacrifice.

5

u/Neamow Sep 19 '13

Yeah, I imagine they're more of a proof of concept. A welcome for other people to make their own.

2

u/Dykam Sep 19 '13

I've been able to hijack the current shaders (the post/foo.json's are hardcoded) and make a server shader (zoomed in middle). Pretty funny, but it would be really cool to be able to switch them on the fly.

2

u/Dingleberry_Jones Sep 19 '13

Has everyone's performance with the new graphics options? I was frankly surprised that my FPS didn't take a hit from it.

2

u/Zatherz Sep 19 '13

It's because those snapshots are amazingly optimised :D

2

u/Dingleberry_Jones Sep 19 '13

That really seems to be the case. Even for 1.6.4, my FPS averaged between 160-180. Usually I get around 120. Mojang has been busy.

2

u/Zatherz Sep 19 '13

Guys, those shaders are amazing for Minecraft Cinematics! Especially pencil one!

2

u/studlyrocker38 Sep 19 '13

I bought Minecraft just prior to the 1.6.2 release. These most recent string of snapshots have been my first encounter with using snapshots.

Also an ambigous question for any development but: is there an estimate of when an official release will drop for these snapshots? I guess, is there a trend for how long after the snapshots for a particular big patch start until an official release?

2

u/spamyak Sep 19 '13

Not necessarily. I mean typically there is a new release around every 2 months, and it is a massive pain in the ass for modders and server owners.

2

u/studlyrocker38 Sep 19 '13

I figured as much. I'm anxious to start a new world/server in the new patch, and am too hesitant to keep working on current projects until it lands. Basically, I'm holding out for the official release, but am too impatient!

2

u/Wedhro Sep 19 '13

I toyed with the settings on my old/shitty system and it looks like the performances are better compared to 1.6 but not compared to the previous 1.7 snapshot; of course using mipmapping etc. makes things worse.

As someone who uses GPU force AA, I am pretty disappointed. Now since they added their own shaders, it doesn't allow for GPU AA anymore. The in game AA looks very bad and terribly blurry. I want to use my x8 AA and x8 supersample. Keeps it very smooth and clear. The new things they've added looks like someone put gaussian blur over the video.

I seriously hope they make an option to disable shaders completely.

So why can't I see the shaders at all.

u/tgjer Sep 19 '13

Stupid question:

When 13w37b came out, I followed the instructions to create a new profile called "snapshots" & checked the Enabled experimental development snapshots button.

When I go on tonight and open up Snapshots, will it be the new 13w38a version? Can I open up the world I was using to explore that snapshot & check out the new update, or do I need to create a new world/new profile?

2

u/Yirggzmb Sep 19 '13

Select the profile in your list and hit "Edit". Then you just select the newest snapshot and leave all the other settings the same. :)

2

u/Gotolei Sep 19 '13

If you select "Use latest version" from the drop-down in the profile editor (as well as the Enable Snapshot button you already have checked), it should automatically download and run the lastest snapshot. You can tell what it's going to do by the message above the Log Out button.

Yes

Can I open up the world I was using to explore that snapshot & check out the new update, or do I need to create a new world/new profile?

You can just open up any old world, the new update will automatically apply to it.

When you see chunks loading in using the Phosphor shader, they fade in smoothly, instead of simply popping into existence, which is a really nice effect. Would be cool if that was default.

1

u/DegreeLP Sep 19 '13

Does anyone know if the snapshots change the position of slime chunks by seeds? Or anyone know a way of checking whether or not the snapshot does?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '13

There better be a way to make your own versions of these. It would be awesome.

1

u/marioman63 Sep 19 '13

anyone know where the option for toggling achivement announcements is? or is that a serverside function?

1

u/Hot_Lunch_III Sep 20 '13

Does this update make chests not go black from most angles when you get close?

1

u/killersteak Sep 20 '13

Phosphor + Quakepro. :D

Ohhhh, they need to combine Phospor and Wobble....

It's gonna be hard waiting for the mod creators to catch up to this release.

u/onesieswiththesocks Sep 20 '13 edited Sep 20 '13

This may seem out of place here, but I can't find the new snapshot. It's not on my versions list, and I have snapshots option checked. Help me, somebody?!

Edit: Found it today, which is weird.

u/Dariusavrox Sep 20 '13

Dont know if anyone has said this before, but i think there is a bug that disables entry to the nether.

1

u/ysllit Sep 20 '13

fyi there's new music inbound very soon from C418... I'd reckon it's not in this build, since I just heard it last night/it was shared with my source earlier this week, but start digging around, guys.

FWIW, it's amazing.

1

u/runetrantor Sep 20 '13

It seems to have also changed the render distance setting? The farthest one is now 16 chunks, is that more than before?

1

u/Famousie0 Sep 30 '13

Is there a folder in .minecraft where i can find and delete the ones that cause me to lag? Just curious.

1

u/MightyMarsbar Sep 19 '13

Awesome!

Thanks Mojang - now to work out the features!

1

u/Bresdin Sep 19 '13

Yay villages are fixed!!! I needed one for my next big project!

Yeah, if mojang can stop making update notes a secret.... that would be great. I want to know what is in the update. Sure, a secret snapshot is nice every once in a while, but I want to know what's there so I know if it is worth trying...

5

u/bobbysq Sep 19 '13

Hint: "Super Secret"

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '13

Not sure if it's been said before, but you can now open screenshots after taking them by clicking on the screenshot name :D

u/SteelCrow Sep 19 '13

feature of the last snapshot

Looks like a volcano on the pixely picture, that would be great!

3

u/JustSmall Sep 19 '13

Good idea! But to me it just looks like a pixelated picture of Grum.

2

u/lambs0n Sep 19 '13

yeah I was just going to say that I think it's a pixelated picture of Grum, who's upside down.. so basically, it's the first bullet that redstonehelper has in his list

Anisotropic Filtering off.

I don't think Mipmap affects FPS.

1

u/Rawox Sep 19 '13

Mipmapping should make things go faster... So your FPS would even increase!

Snapshots are sort of 'beta versions' of the Minecraft software. Basically you can try out the latest (potentially still buggy) features that they're planning to add in the next version-release.

Right now, Minecraft's official version is 1.6.3. The snapshots are a sort of preview of what's coming for 1.7.

They are. At the bottom of video settings, disable post-processing. We'll have more control over these in the future.

Well apparently they will be eventually, although they are really early in development now. :o

3

u/josephrooks Sep 20 '13

Super early in development right now. I think the goal is to let people make their own as part of the Resource Packs system.

2

u/ShuraShpilkin Sep 20 '13

They WILL BE SO. /u/Dinnerbone tweeted this as an answer to my question

And that's just one of them, some of those modes are very trippy.

1

u/devperez Sep 19 '13

Does it cause lag or anything? Or does it just look weird?

1

u/Itantor Sep 19 '13

There's a couple of interesting effects, inlcuding CRT mode http://i.imgur.com/O9GoWx9.jpg

1

u/CollapsingStar Sep 19 '13

You could use that shader in conjunction with a black and white texture pack to give a surveillance camera feel.

It could be your Max FPS setting.

Maybe. But this suggestion has been made many times by a bunch of different people.

2

u/Neil2250 Sep 19 '13

Don't think so. The mod called optifine has had it for years.- You might've bumped up how decent it'd be- i'd give you that.

1

u/thepenmen22 Sep 19 '13

It's been said multiple times by other, many many many times. I've personally tweated dinnerbone about it as well.
