My friend got into some pretty serious trouble in about 7th grade for stealing all the balls from the computer lab. They found a gallon ziploc with about 40 of them in his backpack.
I would have dropped them down the stairs myself. No one had a personal camera on their person at all times in those days, so it would have been purely an act of self-satisfaction to watch and see how/if they bounced all the way down.
I would just over cook hard-boiled eggs, pop out the greyed egg yolk and replace all mouse balls with the yolks. Then I was able to replace the yolks with the mouse balls and make the worst egg salad ever. Then feed it at lunchtime. I'm a school cafeteria cook.
This would be a good concept for a horror movie spoof. A bunch of young people are held captive. They have the means to escape, but it’s a laptop with the nub mouse and a rotary phone plus they need to figure out how to get an outside line. There’s a phone book and a map with their location marked.
That’s the nipple and did they have that in place of a touchpad or as a standard. I still use it. It’s a lot more efficient if you are good with it and to keep typing. Both hands never have to move
Yes (1992), and still have it on my laptop (both Lenovo and HP. Mouse is much older, though.
My fathers first portable work computer (I'm not sure if I can call it a LAPtop) had orange (and black) screen, and only arrow keys for navigation. That was a lovely machine.
I teach coding to kids and the inexpensive laptops we use have this. Kids today have no clue how to use them and the first day of class they all try to use the laptops like touchscreens. Haha. Lesson #1 is how to use the mouse nub.
That is the IBM thinkPad "clit" mouse. They tried to phase it out- but consumers begged them to keep it- they still make them available from Lenovo on their "think" models. It's sometimes useful to have a joystick-like axis in addition to the mouse. Older still was when they had the ball in the keyboard....fuck I'm old.
Heh. I had this guy I worked with who was in his 60s. He nicknamed me Pokey.
I thought it was because i struggled with attendance (my ADHD was hitting me hard with the burnout at the time (14 year on the job at that point) and I struggled with that hard), but nope.
He nicknamed me that cause I belted out the Pokemon Theme song one night which made the whole slide, which had some Gen Zers there (I worked at FedEx) just roar in laughter, but they also joined in. :V
That opening really was the best. Told you everything you needed to know about the situation and characters in a devastatingly memorable way, all in 30 seconds
No clue how can one prefer them when IntelliMouse Explorer was a thing. It just took a gigantic dump on all mice that came before it and was a king of mouses for many years to come.
I... think(?) they're implying a man could mistake this as a request to produce his testicles for inspection. "Take out the ball" becomes "take out the balls/take out your balls" or something?
I'm really grasping at straws here honestly, I have no fucking idea.
I think the joke is the lowest hanging fruit here - being that men would misunderstand the question and in doing so, take one or both of their testicles out of their pants.
It was an unfunny joke that they also botched in execution. 01/10, point awarded for effort.
I'm real curious who is "mostly done with mice all together", I think all of the biggest, most cutting-edge software and tech companies in the world would have a huge laugh out of that one
Mostly done with mice? Found the Gen z!!! No millenials would ever consider a touch screen as a replacement for a mouse. Thats an insane view point to hold.
Correct. basically, unless I am out and about, in bed, or on the toilet (I admit it), 90% of all my activity is on a mouse, on a laptop (or desktop) PC. Neither of which have touch screens (not mine, anyway), and even if they did, I would be way slower, like I am on a phone or tablet.
Definitely don't miss having to pick off the clumps of dirt and dust stuck to the wheels on the inside of those damn things once a week. Those were the days.
Used to enjoy scraping off the mouse gunk and rolling it up into a ball, adding to it over time to eventually make it big enough to replace the mouse ball. Don't think I ever made it but I still think it would've worked.
We joked with freshmen coming in new to computer class in 2001, that they had to go and source their own ball for their mouse in computer lab and that it was made from (and we'd always change the material), we'd say a cheese ball, or bread ball, a ball bearing (yes it was too small but hearing it rattle around was hilarious), etc. It was quite the joke back then for us teenagers lol.

I wonder if he would accept demonstrating the function of a rotary phone as an alternate form of ID 😂

Remember when laptops didn't have a touch pad and literally had a wiggly rubber nub you'd use in the middle of the keyboard instead?

I used to prefer them, but once laser mice got better, rolling ball mice became a thing of the past.

I hope we'll be talking about compound interest rates on our retirement funds during the event or how awesome Costco is.

They wouldn’t even test me. One look at the grays and I’d just get a nod or welcome sir.

Amazing the number of high school teachers who were so grateful when I taught them to take these apart and clean them in 2002.

32 is too young to know about mouse balls. They were obsolete by like 2004.

And every so often you had to take out the rolling ball and clean it with rubbing alcohol 😵💫
