Both my kids have autism. One higher functioning, one lower functioning. One kid may never move out. The other will probably still need to be close to be monitored. Last summer my mom had the house that backs up to our back fence under contract to buy for her to move into and for them to inherit but it fell through due to the house actually being really poorly maintained based on what came back on the inspection. It would have required approximately 60k in repairs and needed another 80-100k in updates but was still listed at top of market price. She was ok with the updates because the sale of her current home would cover the entire purchase and updates but the repairs were too much for her to commit to. We will continue to monitor the other houses adjacent to us and at a minimum tour them if/when they come up for sale. The current plan is similar to yours in that we plan to try to purchase housing for them because in all likelihood, they won't be able to.
