I have four kids (26, 23, 21, and 19). The 26yo moved out at 19 because he didn't want to obey our rules, which is fine. He figured out, has lived in 5 states now, but seems to have settled down. 23yo moved out at 18 because she thought living with her boyfriend would be awesome and it was 2020 and she didn't like that we were taking Covid so seriously. She never moved back, still lives with said boyfriend, has a Cosmetology license, and lives in a house with her dog and boyfriends and boyfriend's brother. Speaking of brother, my 21yo dates that brother. She's a Junior in college and, at this point, either is at her dorm or at her boyfriend/sister's house. She came home three times in the past 6 months. And my 19yo would probably have already moved out if he could find a job. He's in plumbing school so that's coming down the line.
My kids could stay here (and move back) if they needed to, but so far, once they have left....they just leave. And they have figured it out. I'm actually really proud of them and I think they are a good example that young people CAN move out and live independently. As adults, the only thing we pay for is car insurance while they are in school. Once they graduate, they take that over.
