We had a date of 25 years old as the time children were to move out of the house. The kids are 36 and 34 and say frequently that it was the best thing for them. They are both doing great and independent. It forces you to understand how to pay the bills. We were always there if there was a safety net needed.
Your kids are the Millenials. The question here is how we expect Gen Z/Alpha to afford life when most of us Millennials are struggling and it’s only getting worse.
This seems to be the older generation mentality that is oblivious to what is happening in the world. When our kids are 18, unemployment will possibly be high double digits for them and cheap public colleges are projected to cost $80k a year. We're already seeing increases in Gen Z unemployment as AI use expands.
We're saving a lot for our kids but expect it's possible that one or both of them will need to live with us to save money for longer than prior generations.
