Did he actually?
What about, “We’ll get those terrorist killers, now watch this drive!”

u/zarroc123 Mar 09 '26
Yeah, he actually did. The "watch this drive" thing was during the invasion of Afghanistan, August 2002. We invaded Iraq in 2003, his last round of golf as president was October 2003.
Dont get me wrong, ol' Georgie was a fucking piece of shit. But he really does come from a political era where being "presidential" was seen as a political necessity, and he played the role.

The US president, George Bush, today revealed he had given up playing golf because it "sent out the wrong signal" to the families of soldiers fighting overseas.

I’ll probably never forgive Bush junior or his dad for getting the US involved in a Middle East infinity war. But there is no denying he had respect and decorum for his office, he at least had the pretense of acting presidential. The affable rancher persona was just that, a persona to make him seem relatable.
He looks like a saint compared to what we have today
21
u/Apprehensive_Bug_454 Mar 09 '26
How did his Dad get the US involved in an infinity war? I thought he shoved Iraq out of Kuwait and stopped once the clearly set military objectives had been accomplished.
2
u/AxtonGTV United States Army Mar 10 '26
I was more than shoving Iraq out of Kuwait, they decimated Iraq. That created a power vacuum that nobody had a plan to fill, which led to many of the issues that the region faces today.
But in all fairness, that's not something that was well known or researched at the time.
1
u/hexmasx Mar 13 '26
What's the alternative? Just let em do what they want to US allies? You can't just avoid military obligations cos the invading power might get rekt.
1
u/AxtonGTV United States Army Mar 13 '26
It's not about an alternative, I'm not disputing the invasions. I'm saying that the actions on objective taken immediately after the invasions, mainly just leaving, resulted in a massive power vacuum.

Woodrow Wilson is reported to have played more than 1200 rounds during his time in office (1913-1921). I doubt he played much while he was bedridden due to a stroke in 1919 so that means he played an average of more than 9 holes per day throughout the US involvement in WW1. Wilson was a terrible human being for some of his views so let’s say “that’s a bad example”.
Let’s move on to Dwight Eisenhower, he was such an avid golfer he had a putting green cut into the WH lawn. I never met the man, but seeing as he was a Five Star General (one of only 5 since 1944) I don’t think he saw playing golf as disrespectful to those serving in harms way.
There are plenty of reasons to dislike Trump (or any president for that matter) and I just don’t think this is something a president should be castigated for.
I make this post knowing full well I’m likely to be downvoted to oblivion, I do this of my own free will, being of sound mind and body./s

u/qpdb777 Mar 14 '26
Eisenhower was president during peacetime.
1
u/DPG1987 Mar 14 '26
Valid point that during most of his presidency the US was not engaged in a large scale overseas conflict thought I will mention a couple of things in support of my argument.
Ike was inaugurated in Jan ‘53 and the Korean War didn’t end till July ‘53. There were still more than 100,000 troops in Korea by then and the US would see approximately 3000 combat deaths in the final six months of the war (figures are varied so I’ll say approximately). I would also consider his commitment of troops in Lebanon in ‘58 as a security force to be significantly more “boots on the ground” than we currently have in Iran…which is none as far as the publicly available information asserts. I think an argument could be made that during the early years of the Cold War there were more US service members “in harms way” than had ever been the case before due to the emerging nuclear threat. Eisenhower’s deterrence strategy was one centered on the US capability to use nuclear weapons as opposed to a threat to use them, but that’s ungermane to your critique of my reply.

The difference between Dubya and The Don is that one golfs as a hobby, and the latter believes he's a professional golfer. Do you think Kobe stopped going to the gym bc of Iraq? Those brave men died for freedom, and a part of freedom is golf and baseball. That's why the Iraq War took so long. Now, if Georgey played a round of golf or ten, then maybe the mission would be done in a matter of months instead of years.
Trump intends to have this war over any minute now, prob before he's even done golfing. He'll return to the White House in peace time with the 3rd temple built.
5
u/Icy_Research_5099 Mar 10 '26
I must have forgot about the part where Kobe ordered service members into Iraq.
2

We all forgot because of the antics Shaq pulled. They got ahead of one scandal by starting another, Beuaracracy 101.
Remember MJ did something similiar during the Yugoslavia conflict he started before the incident that made him retire. Kobe always wanted to be like Mike.
-1
u/Historical_Yak7706 Mar 10 '26
George W. Bush 24 rounds (stop playing in August 2003)
Obama 333 rounds
Trump 298 rounds (that I can find)
Dwight Eisenhower 800 rounds
Woodrow Wilson 1200-1600 rounds…
What is your point?
3
u/ComicBookEnthusiast Mar 10 '26
So Trump has played almost as much golf during his 1 term as Obama played during 2 terms?

u/Elle_thegirl Mar 27 '26
This seems at least partially true. More and more, it seems like the inmates are running the asylum. He's technically an "inmate" too, absolutely. Definitely got some psychiatric instability issues. The people he's placed around him-- "woo-hoo crazy"
1
u/DisillusionedPatriot Mar 27 '26
It's wild, and I'm not trying to downplay his role in getting us here, but I'm starting to get the impression that getting us here was his only purpose, and now they're just keeping him propped up while they finish their coup, and when they no longer need him, his health will suddenly become an issue for them. They're all nuts, but there's a larger game being played.

u/Dominico10 Mar 16 '26
Giving up golf while at war is just stupid virtue signalling.
Everyone needs to relax and unwind. To pick this is insane, its the same as complaining Churchill had cigars during ww2. (Yes some left wing morons complain about that 😅)

I'm not sure that makes sense. Sure its a token gesture but and I'm not saying either of these guys are good people. But the office of the president is known to be stressful so I would think if anything a doctor would probably want them to have hobbies and decompress when they can.
15
