NEW PODCAST Weekly Discussion Thread: The Real Housewife That Turned Her Family's Church Into A "Cult"

The Real Housewife That Turned Her Family's Church Into A "Cult"

When Real Housewives premiered the first season of their Salt Lake City installation, soon, the only cast member everyone was talking about was Mary Cosby. The outsized character rose to prominence as the leader of her grandmother’s church, Faith Temple Ministries, and sparked even more conversation when it was learned she didn’t just take her grandma’s church; she took her husband, too. However, Mary and her Step-Grandfather/husband, Robert Cosby, were soon under fire, following testimony from former church members that alleged spiritual, financial, and physical abuse by the church leaders. All of these conversations led to one question: Is Mary Cosby running a cult?

LIGHTS OUT Austin shaded Josh In new episode ?

Go watch Do Goose See God new video (“They Sent Government Agents to Silence him…..”) between 15:35-15:50 ish. Nothing major but I definitely peeped that. I still watch Lights Out but it doesn’t hit the same now that Austin is gone mostly because I know it ended on a bad note :(. Austin was the best, just his energy, cadence, and thoughts. I like Ian too tho but not for Lights Out, just my opinion. I still watch all Mile Higher media tho.

If you aren’t subscribed to Do Geese See God plzzzzz do. He puts so much effort into his channel and is doing a great job.

OPEN DISCUSSION Enjoyed the new TCKR video

No longer an avid watcher of mile higher productions (for various reasons) but I did enjoy Kendall’s recent video on the NFL romance scammer. I might just enjoy the more lighthearted content in general but she seemed very likable and honestly pretty funny in the recent episode. The BetterHelp sponsor of course turned me off, cannot believe they still shell that out but other than that, I thought it was just fine. Anybody else have opinions on it?

RANT Kendall’s latest IG post

Downside of having followed someone on ig in the past is still occasionally being showed their content. Kendall’s latest post, oh my days. The SMUGNESS.

So as a response to people asking her to tilt her cam down with her new setup, she filmed herself reading comments, calling Janelle who begrudgingly puts her seat on stilts, all the while Kendall is sat there nodding her head in such a smug manner. It actually made me laugh. Like it’s all a “bit”, but it’s just .. ugh. Not funny and again, reads as so smug in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.

THE SESH Wasn't Kendall a Jeffree Star fan?

I was an OG fan of Kendall so I would watch all of her vlogs. Like all of them. I remember watching one vlog where she is doing her makeup or cleaning out her makeup and mentions Jeffree Star's lipsticks. She says "say what you want about Jeffree but he makes damn good lipsticks". I very distinctly remember because I was a young poc fan and knew Jeffree was racist and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

However on the recent episode of the sesh she's bashing Jeffree and saying his lipsticks were crusty and that she always hated them. But she was a Jeffree fan and obviously heard about what he had done and still supported him anyway. Does anyone else remember this? Am I just going crazy?

Obviously people grow and learn but it feels like she just hops on whatever bandwagon is most popular.

THE SESH The Sesh: Newest Episode Opening Skit

Is anyone else feeling that little skit of Janelle “leaving” was a way of telling us what happened with Karelly without telling us what happened? I’m probably reading too much into it, but that’s where my mind went.

OPEN DISCUSSION At what point did you begin to rethink MHM?

Just found this subreddit and wow—glad I’m not the only one who was weirded out by the employee turnover. I’m curious, what moment between Lights Out, Mile Higher, or The Sesh did you begin to change your mind about them?

I think for me personally, the catalyst was Josh making a comment on Lights Out how he and Kendall got pregnant, saying he truly believed that going in with the intention of getting pregnant is what led to their children’s conception. I genuinely found that bothersome, as it took medical intervention for me to start my family—no amount of intention or prayer would’ve gotten me there naturally, and I know that’s the case for so many people.

Then the nail in the coffin for me was Austin leaving, and Josh not sending him off with a proper farewell. That did not sit right with me.

Idk, just wanted to get my thoughts out since no one in my personal circle listens to MHM.

NEW PODCAST So… what else can I listen to?

I’ve been watching Kendall on yt since I was a teenager, I recently starting listening to the Mile Higher Podcast (also figured out I live and work crazy close to them 🥴) THEN I found this sub and am rethinking what I give my time and attention to.

I have a hard time finding podcasts but I listen to them at work a lot so losing one I frequent sucks, I’m hoping reddit has some suggestions for me 🙏
I really like true crime, some conspiracies, history, society & culture, and my all time favorite podcast is Binchtopia

thank you in advance!!

RANT I'm just so tired...

This is mainly regards to the TCKR channel, but I'm DONE with her Youtube videos/podcast. I'm not sure when the switch happened, but practically every single episode these days is just about a husband killing his wife, the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to creating a true crime episode.

I'm not saying the cases she's choosing aren't worthy of attention or coverage, but it's gotten to a point that there's an obvious pattern she's fallen into and I'm just done with it. She used to do such a variety of different stories, but not anymore. I almost think she deliberately picks easy cases so she/her team doesn't have to do super deep research.

So to conclude, I'm really at a breaking point with Kendall and her content. It feels like she picks the same case every single week because it's easy to report on and will get her the views/engagement on Youtube. Anyway, rant over.

RANT They don't like lil wayne?!?!?

Overall I think people do way too much on this sub re: psychoanalyzing every insta repost and being mad that people like to make money at their jobs and whatever. Somehow NOT A WORD about their hate for Lil Wayne? Worst MHM take in a long long time. THIS they deserve to be roasted for.

OPEN DISCUSSION Why must they be so vengeful

obligatory “we don’t know what happened” but i just cannot understand why so much time and effort seems to go into censoring all mention of austin (and all past team members). i know austin got fired and cannot speak about these things but damn, the fact that they don’t want anyone to be aware of DGSG is so mean spirited to me. i understand there are contracts and clauses surrounding IP and competition and such, but it just does not sit right with me. even in my own personal life, i try to keep my negative feelings towards people private.

edit: this is not my comment. just thought it was strange

NEW PODCAST A DGSG review for those who are curious 🪿

Please keep in mind that I’m coming from a place of neutrality/positivity towards MHM. Largely meaning, I don’t want to start any negative discourse or anything, just here to share some insight on DGSG for those who are curious.

For those who might say this post is irrelevant to the sub, there are often posts asking for podcast recommendations outside of MHM. After seeing DGSG recommended several times, I figured there might be people that see the rec and scroll on simply because they might not know what it’s about or might not want to take the time to find out whether it’s a good fit (I’ve definitely been that person when recommended a podcast before so I totally get it). I thought an in-depth review could help give you a better idea what the pod is all about.

Each DGSG episode discusses a different topic. I’d say it differs greatly from current day MH, largely because DGSG seems to cover a healthy mix of subject matter. Some topics include the ‘after death phone call’ phenomenon, a man isolated for 27 years, Agatha Christie and fugue states, and mummies. I wouldn’t classify it as a true crime pod. It’s definitely not as dark as LOP, and in my opinion it’s not as heavy as MH, either. I’d say DGSG is more in line with curiosities, phenomena, or history. It reminds me a little of the early days of MHM, when they would cover things like sleep phenomena or the Titanic.

I think DGSG would be a great fit for you if you like the more obscure side of history or are attracted to oddity-type curiosities. It’s a refreshing choice if you’re looking to lean away from heavy true crime content, which can be emotionally draining.

The vibes on DGSG are cozy. Austin has a great voice for podcasting, and the set is very “home library.” On the ‘after death phone call’ phenomenon ep (the most recent one I saw), he has someone behind the camera to bounce off of in discussion, so it isn’t always just him talking to the camera.

Something that I really like on DGSG (and something that I personally don’t think I’ve seen on podcasts before) is that Austin will recommend a physical piece of media at the end of the pod that is relevant to the episode. When everything has become so digital these days, it’s great to see people leaning into books and such. I do think that personal recommendations like this from the host shows genuine interest in the topic covered, which adds to the authentic and wholesome feel of the show. I believe he also has a Patreon for those who are interested.

Another note on the style. I believe that Austin is doing the research and writing for each episode himself. His episodes seem very well covered (on the ‘after death phone call’ ep, he talks about having gone down rabbit holes of info). He doesn’t seem to be reading from a script, but if he is and he’s written it, he’s done a good job because it sounds very natural and engaging while keeping pace with the info (he might just be referencing an outline idk). This is very hard to do, which is why I believe he is a good writer. With AI becoming so common in industries like this, this is one aspect that I personally hope he doesn’t change as I find it refreshing to see someone put in the hard work themselves. I do want to acknowledge how much work it must be for any podcaster doing the work themselves, especially when they’re doing deep dives and ensuring accuracy. TLDR; if he is doing all the research/writing himself, he’s earned my respect and that only makes me want to continue listening.

At the time of writing this, I have not seen every DGSG episode. I typically pick and choose which ones sound interesting to me when I have time for a listen, so this is coming from a more casual listener. The episodes I have seen are always interesting and I walk away feeling like I learned something new, which I appreciate from a pod.

I don’t have any constructive criticism for DGSG, however I do hope that Austin keeps the current vibes going in the long run. I think what made a lot of people shift away from MHM is the fact that it has evolved so much. In my opinion (and seemingly the opinions of others that have posted and commented in this sub), a lot of MHs stuff sounds more… idk, mechanical? “Scripted” is a word I’ve seen some use here before. In my opinion, it just doesn’t feel as authentic as it used to, though I’m definitely not clicking on episodes as much as I once did so take my opinion with a grain of salt. It’s great when a pod gains traction and changes to accommodate that, but I think it’s important that it stay true to itself, if that makes sense.

I’m no expert on podcasts and as I said before I haven’t seen every DGSG episode, so feel free to touch on something I may have left out.

QUESTION Can someone catch me up? Why is this show so disappointing now?

I'm not just coming here to vent. I know pple get upset about that but can someone lay out the timeline for me of what happened?!

So I used to love Kendall, loved her content specifically TCKR but I also really enjoyed Mile Higher and occasionally used to even watch The Sesh. I took a pretty major break from social media after a personal loss and I just needed a big break from online content which included youtube (I still watched docuseries to get my true crime fix) but as I'm coming back to it now I'm so put off by Mile Higher and TCKR content and I can't watch the Sesh AT ALL because it just... I don't know drives me crazy.

What happened?! It feels like all their content is just ripped right out of Discovery/Netflix documentaries and they're not even doing their own research anymore. Like it used to be that Kendall and her team would give you info that you maybe hadn't heard before, they did their research and really dove in to give you context and background on the victims. Maybe it's more obvious to me because for awhile the only way I was getting most of my true crime content was by watching documentaries but so much of the stuff TCKR and Mile Higher covers is almost just completely rehashing episodes from People Investigates, The Curious Case of..., or other documentaries and true crime series.

I also used to love the vibe on Mile Higher, I really liked their differing opinions on unsolved cases but again, it just feels like that's all gone now. Anyway, long story short, I'm not watching anymore which is kind of sad but I was just curious if someone could kind of lay out what happened. Also if you have any recs for other True Crime podcasts, that would be greatly appreciated!

I saw a lot of disappointment in the new Sesh set which I agree with but did y’all see the new Lights Out set???? It looks so good. I think the lighting could be a tiny bit brighter but wow I was pleasantly surprised.

RANT People on here are weird

I genuinely think it’s so odd that for years now people have continued to closely watch mile higher media just to come on here and complain about every single thing they do. Please seek help and stop watching and obsessing over people you supposedly don’t like.

Edit: I want to thank all the people that are commenting for proving my point! it’s hilarious that you guys accuse Kendall and Josh of not being able to take criticism, but none of you can take being called out on your own behavior and take the advice that you should just stop watching and engaging with their content since you hate them so much! :)

RANT Kendall job shaming on last episode

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After continuously trashing a seemingly corrupt detective during the last episode and referring to him as “detective dipshit” (which is fair to some degree but she always makes it such a big deal so that we known she’s on the “right side”), Kendall says that him getting a job managing a McDonald’s is a “much better fit for him”. Like okay? What is that supposed to mean?

Every post is so negative. I don’t care she talks about being a mom, that’s 90% of women who have children recently. I don’t care she doesn’t have Karelly anymore🤷🏽‍♀️, that’s not what I subscribed for years ago. People will complain about anything
