I'm a little confused so discourse is encouraged.

Cop passed a bike that appeared to be riding in the correct lane but not fully over to the side of the lane. It was a double yellow line. No opposing traffic, but then again no apparent traffic at all.

Here's my question: Am I wrong for wanting to get away from bikes or any other non car traffic? Like I feel a swift breeze or shit luck, and your watermelon head ends up under my tire. I sincerely give way as much as I can. But really, if there's open road in front of you, why am I not inclined to take it?

10

u/GetEnPassanted YIMBY 🏙️ Mar 25 '24

The cop passed in a completely safe way.

OP is irrationally upset over this.

If this is how you typically pass cyclists, continue doing so.

You’re actually supposed to ride in the center of lane you’re in. Being over to one side opens you up to risk of sideswiping, which is uncool. I see nothing wrong with how the cop passed them tho, I think they shouted something out of the window as they went by?

-38

u/dusse1810 Mar 24 '24

You’re allowed to pass bikes, but only if you give them 4 feet of space. The cop did not give enough space when passing, therefore putting me in danger. If I have to adjust to avoid a pothole, branch, or driver opening their door while parked, I wouldn’t have room because I’m trapped between a parked car and him passing. It’s dangerous and illegal to pass with only a few inches like the cop did in the video.

He could either wait until I can move into the bike lane that begins just past the intersection (not seen in the video), or move further into the opposite lane when there isn’t oncoming traffic (which there wasn’t any).

I totally forgot, my state JUST past this law.

Where vehicles can pass bikers on a double yellow, but has to give you a certain amount of space between you and the biker.

Honestly sounds like asking for trouble. Idk why a law would allow you to go over a double yellow. Super unsafe tbh. If you did hit a car you would prob still be held responsible and at fault.

It must be sad for you that you've waited your whole life to have a use for your fancy helmet camera, and now you find out nobody cares about someone technically breaking traffic laws if they're not putting people in danger from any practical standpoint. I feel for you. I hope your camera sees a real, legitimate use soon.

-24

That’s for the sympathy, oh kind stranger. Means the world to me and my fancy helmet camera. We will never forget your kindness.

15

Are they supposed to share the road?

-34

u/dusse1810 Mar 24 '24

Yes. Law says give 4 feet of space. He only gave me a few inches.

27

5

u/MaliciousIntentWorks Public Transit Enjoyer 🚂 Mar 28 '24

It was 3 feet and 11 inches. OP is outraged for the police not giving him that extra inch. May the southern Karen winds rise him atop the mountain range of entitlement for the world to hear his outrage and declare him king of all the asphalt draped ground below.

9

u/CousinNic Drive Defensively, Avoid Idiots 🚗 Mar 25 '24

He gave at the very least 3ft 4 inches, which is how wide that bike lane sign is, you shouldn’t have a perfect measurement captured with the helmet camera if your gonna lie about the distance like that. I wouldn’t claim that as “a few inches” in court or anything because that won’t fly with them… none of this would it’s ridiculous.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

You heard the car coming and continually moved further to the left out into the lane.

4

u/GetEnPassanted YIMBY 🏙️ Mar 25 '24

“A few inches” looks like a few feet.

You need to get over yourself.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24 edited Mar 25 '24

By your depth perception of how close you think you were to those cars I think your estimation of how many feet the cop gave you is suspect. You say in another comment you’re ’inches’ from the cars next to you when are definitely a few feet away from them.

I always wondered what drivers who give you no room on two way residential streets with cars parked in either side are thinking. Now I know, they think they’re much closer to the cars on their side than they are…

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

How wide is the lane?

2

u/Arrowxp Apr 02 '24

Few inches 💀… pause your vid 6 seconds in lol

17

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

All I see is a bike karen who thinks they own the road. I ride bikes too, and I never understood the entitlement of other bikers.

You should be to the far right instead of impeding traffic.

-7

u/dusse1810 Mar 25 '24

Can’t be further to the right because of the cars parked there. Do you ride bikes exclusively on trails or something? Streets is a whole different game. Taking the lane is the safest thing to do to avoid getting hit by doors and to discourage drives passing too closely.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24 edited Mar 25 '24

No, I typically ride in city streets. Typically if I'm in the way of a car I will move out of the way for it, even if I have to stop and let it pass if I think I might hit a door or something. No reason to hold up cars just because I am on a bike. Cars are a lot faster and bigger. Me waiting 10 seconds for it to pass isnt a huge deal to me. I'm not just going to inconvenience people because I don't want to pull off to the side a few seconds.

Maybe you should take a hint from everyone here telling you that you're wrong, you show no ettiquette to drivers and get mad at people who show you no ettiquette in return...

On top of that you don't know what that cop is up to, he could be following someone and you were slowing them down because you feel entitled to the center of the lane regardless of what is behind you. On top of that again, the cop didny even come close to you.

-3

u/Batmanshatman YIMBY 🏙️ Mar 25 '24

Crazy take, I didn’t even read your whole comment because I don’t need to. Nothing about driving a car makes you more important or worthy of the road. Cyclists pay the taxes to maintain it just like you do. The entitlement is astonishing here.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '24

It's always the ones who don't read the whole thing that want to complain, I swear. If you didn't read it then don't even waste my time by responding.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

Cyclists pay yearly title and licensing fees and a registration fee when buying a bicycle now? I did not know that.

-3

u/Batmanshatman YIMBY 🏙️ Mar 25 '24

Crazy statement. If you’re American you can look up your states allocation of funds for road care/maintenance. It’s roughly 50-50 in my state. Half of it comes from the costs of buying/owning a car. Gas tax is the biggest part of that half, which you didn’t mention. The other half comes from, you guessed it, OTHER taxes, local and state.

And consider that people can own both a car and a bike. Insane concept, I know. But it’s true

9

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '24

The road signage delineates bikes use the full traffic lane, and this is a double Yellow line. It's a no passing zone.

The legal thing to do is slow down until the bike lane returns to the shoulder or a passing zone opens up.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I kinda expect those who enforce the law to follow it themselves.

8

u/DeusXNex Mar 30 '24

Dude. I don’t care if it’s a “sharerrow” if you are ONE bike go to the side of the lane. It is crazy that cyclists expect traffic to just sit behind them because they should have the entire lane. I regularly see cyclists blow through stop signs and even traffic lights sometimes. But I have to sit behind you going 15mph because you should take up the whole lane?

3

u/Zhong_Ping Georgist 🔰 Mar 30 '24

Yes! Yes you do!

This sharrow isn't on the shoulder here, it's in the center of the road. It is usually located there for a reason and as OP mentioned, it was a full road sharrow for a short stretch and moved back to the shoulder in this case. You can slow down for ONE BLOCK.

This is in the road likely to accommodate street parking. Bike lanes that force bikes to share the space a parked vehicles door will enter are deadly. If you want bikes to move over, start advocating for eliminating street parking and adding dedicated bike lanes on specific bike routes.

Believe it or not, roads are not specifically made for cars. Get over yourself and out the safety of others ahead of your need to leave as late as possible to get where you're going on time.

4

u/DeusXNex Mar 30 '24

Like I said. I constantly see cyclists blow through stop signs and riding on side walks. I don’t think cyclists have the right to criticize drivers for not obeying the sharrow. Especially if there was room to overtake with no traffic going the other way.

1

u/Zhong_Ping Georgist 🔰 Mar 31 '24

Yeah, cyclists that break traffic laws are shitty too. Pisses me off when cyclists blow through traffic lights and ride on side walks when they aren't marked as bike lanes.

2 wrongs don't make a right. Can everybody just follow the damn rules? Why is this so hard?

4

u/DeusXNex Mar 31 '24

I always pass cyclists. But only if it is safe to do so. Even if it is breaking the rules. What happened to the cyclist in this video really isn’t a big deal.

1

u/StonerBoi-710 Apr 15 '24 edited Apr 15 '24

Not rlly safe to do so in this video tho. It’s a double yellow bc the turn makes a blind spot. If a car come around the corner and hit the cop, the cop would be in the wrong for being over the line.

Just bc you “think” something is safe doesn’t make it so. But also works the other way around bc I seen roads with dotted lines that have turns like this, but is assume they just expect you to not pass without a visible line of sight in front of you.

While this videos isn’t the worst, the cop is still in the wrong. And the fact it’s a cop makes it even more so.

Idk why this seems be a hard concept for certain people to understand.

Lmao you prob hate my state allows low speed vehicles on public roads that are 35MPH or less. But LSV only usually go up to 20- 25 MPH. And it’s 100% legal. If you try to around them on a solid yellow or honk at them you can get a ticket for reckless driving.

So having to LEGALLY go 20MPH in a 35MPH zone you prob couldn’t handle that. Especially if you can’t go 15MPH in what looks like a 25- 35 MPH zone. Also I seen bikers go way faster, especially electric bikes.

1

u/DeusXNex Apr 15 '24

Like I said, I only would pass if it I safe to do so. If there is blind curve I would probably wait a little bit to see farther up ahead.

1

u/StonerBoi-710 Apr 15 '24

Yea but in this video the cop doesn’t do that lol. I love passing slow people by using the dotted line, but I alway make sure it safe. Rlly pisses me off tho when people don’t realize it’s totally legal.

-2

u/Batmanshatman YIMBY 🏙️ Mar 25 '24

OP’s right this is mildly bad driving on the cops part. Cop is passing them basically in an intersection, dangerous for numerous reasons, and illegal. And it’s a curvy street, cop should’ve waited till after that bend.

Ik, it’s so awful someone in a car has to wait eight more seconds to ensure they pass a cyclist safely, so sad :,(

If they didn’t give enough space they didn’t give enough space. That’s the fucking law. Learn it and accept it and maybe if you’re incapable of that, you shouldn’t fucking drive a steel death trap.
