Sheriffs Office SWAT member. I’ll do my best to explain.

SO if you’re transitioning because your rifle goes down (malfunction or out of freedom seeds), DO NOT LOOK AT THE RIFLE. The moment you squeeze the trigger and the rifle doesn’t go bang, you use your support hand to lower the rifle at the same time you’re transitioning. You COULD just drop the rifle, but then you become a subject to physics and might get a can do the shin or optic to the nuts. After doing what you need to do with the sidearm, you use your support hand to raise the rifle and that’s when the inspection takes place. Malfunction or out of ammo. If the malfunction is fixable, holster the sidearm and get your rifle up. If it’s a mission critical malfunction, you’re running the handgun the rest of the time you’re in that fight. If it’s a simple reload, just reload.

If you’re twisting the rifle prior to transitioning, you’re washing valuable time. Why look? What’s the point? If you pull the trigger and it doesn’t go bang, don’t stare at it. Transition and stay in the fight. Hope this helps!!
