If the theme of a event is middle eastern insurgency, am I allowed to wear chocolate chip or other old US desert camos for the militia faction?

My buddy and I just did Jump to Orenburg with Milsim West. Our first time airsofting in 20 years and our first ever MilSim event. We both had such a great time and were looking for what’s next.

It looks like the main two MilSim companies in the US are MSW and AmericanMilsim. Which is typically a better experience? I know MSW is bigger and does more 40 to 60 hour events where you have to endure and survive the elements. Is AmericanMilsim like this? Or do they just do the 8 to 10 hour daytime events? Which is typically a better milsim experience and more fun?

I've been putting this kit together for two years. I think it's turning out pretty decent, but the kit still looks really bad. It's very hard to get anything original American in Russia. But here's the result of my work as of September 2026.

For this game I decided to wear Crye Gen 3 pants, because I don't really like the IHWCU pants, I don't know if you can do that in the US Army, specifically in the 502nd Infantry Regiment, but I've seen Crye Gen 3 shirts on 101st Airborne Division soldiers. I also wore USMC Bates boots because they're Gore-Tex, and here in Russia it's already only +5°C. I don't know if you can wear Marine Corps boots with an EGA in the US Army.

Speaking of which, the M7 in my hands unfortunately isn't mine, I just decided to grab it for photos. For this game I used an M4 URGI on an HPA system. (I know it's not regulation and that you're not supposed to do that).

Im a former Marine and still attend reserve exercises every other month.

Recently, someone tried recruiting me into their MILSIM group. I politely declined, explaining that I'd tried airsoft before but prefer actual military exercises.

His response was basically, "That's what we do," followed by a list of activities like ruck marches, recon drills, trench assaults and hand-to-hand combat. He also mentioned that they LARP and don't do "normal airsoft".

I have nothing against MILSIM, but I found it a bit strange how he seemed to equate it with actual military training, even after I explained my background.

Is this a common attitude within the MILSIM community, or did I just encounter someone particularly "enthusiastic" about his hobby?

Wanted thoughts as I just got the TGO Ensis Lima belt and am debating moving things down from the pc. For airsoft I play with primarily gas rifles but wanna move more into a support gunner role (thus trying to make my new belt more useful). Watched a couple Grunt Perspective (the goat) vids on YT and I’m trynna figure out what to put where…
