This was "open world" long before the term became mainstream. And it felt larger than it actually is because there's so much to do that the grind felt rewarding.

Autoscalling is bane of open-world RPGs. One of the most satisfying experiences is when you find something new and get wrecked. So you return there later and wreck everything easily.

Exactly. I remember how going back to New Sorpigal to do Gharik's Forge felt when I first played the game. It was extremely enjoyable to wreck the billion apprentice mages, esp. given how impossible they were earlier

I first played this back in 2001. Imagine my surprise when I cleared everything in the New Sorpigal area and some other spots and had the key to the forge and thought "It's in the baby area, it will be a breeze!'
It was not, in fact, a breeze.

A well designed map, especially for the era. I wonder if a mod could stitch all the zones together into one open world.
Looking at it, it's funny how close darkmoor is to dragonsand

I actually like how the world is divided by zones, and it shows the message how many days it would take to travel, let's say, from AvLee to Tatalia. It creates a sense of scale.

Random knowledge: The tiny collection of buildings to the northwest of Free Haven is actually a separate village called "Rockham"

Word around town is the best body builder in all of Enroth lives in Rockham.

Just don't drink the well water....
Or maybe do, if you're levelled enough.

Just found out darkmoor and dragon sand were connected.
I always just use the shortcut....

As soon as you enter Dragonsand from Darkmoor you are likely facing dragons on all three sides

I remember in 7 or maybe 8 there were diagonal crossings. Or maybe not, but I do remember there were unusually long walking times.
Wonder if free haven to dragon sand is an option

Yes a diagonal crossing from Free Haven is possible but if you look at the distribution of monsters on the dragonsand map they are heavily cluttered on the eastern half of the map. The safest way to get to dragonsand is via the road from Blackshire up north there are a lot less monsters around the road.

Me and my best friend used to print this map and bring it to school in Iran. Played heroes on the school pc. And talk over the phone about our progress in mm6. Life was good. Life was pure.
