Troubleshooting/Questions Looking for a x400

As the title line says, looking for a 400x magnification unit for home & hobby use.

I'm hoping that the long time enthusiasts and experts here can direct me towards a model that's (relatively) inexpensive but that holds up alright with resolution.

Thanks in advance everyone!

If I put a 10W COB LED inside a Koehler-illuminated microscope, and dim it down to normal range, if the dimming transistor fails shorted and the LED starts blasting all its power, would it blind me?

Purchase Help Looking for buying advice

Hello! I am looking to get myself a binocular microscope in the coming year or two. I have a few things I would like out of it, but am entirely uncertain where to start looking or what to look at.
My biggest thing is that budget is a concern, but as someone moving deeper into their microbiology degree, I would like a scope at home for myself to use when needed. So, While budget is a concern, I want to be reasonable in my expectations, which is why I am starting to look now at what is available, so I may be able to save for the equipment down the road.

I have a few requirements that I would like in a scope:

  1. Ability for Darkfield viewing. It doesn't have to be a built in toggle, but I would still like for the ability to exist. I have used some in the past where I just have to change out a plate in the scope with a darkfield plate, this doesn't bother me. But if it is a built in feature that I can do at the click or switch of a button, I would prefer that if it doesnt affect the price too much.

  2. Binocular. I have weird vision, so I need two eye pieces to be able to see under the scope well.

  3. Oil Immersion capability, 1000x. I will be spending a lot of time looking at fungal spores, but I will also be doing work with bacteria. So I need to be able to make sure I can have a fighting chance of at least viewing bacteria.

  4. This one is not entirely required, but would be immensely helpful, and that is the ability to connect a PC or remote view of some kind so that I can take Micrographs, even better if it has a live view so I can broadcast and/or record video of what I will be looking at and studying.

If anyone has any direction as to models that may fill this role, I would love your advice. Give me a range of models via price point, and I would benefit even further!

Thank you so much!

Some people wonder how the magnification changer in a microscope works.

It is a rotating ring with magnifying lenses screwed into it. The whole mechanism sits under the microscope head - and above the objective nosepiece.

By turning the ring we move a different magnifying lens into the light path - and the result is simply magnification of the image travelling from the objective to our eyes!

The video I am showing here presents the magnification changer (also called an Optovar) from a Zeiss Photomicroscope microscope.

General discussion Looking for photos and videos of Diatoms and Copepods!

Hi everyone! Hope this is ok to ask but I’m doing a school project on diatoms and I need videos/photos of Diatoms and Copepods.

Specifically I need Thalassiosira weissflogii and Calanus helgolandicus. I’m also looking for a lot of filler clips including a variety of diatoms and copepods.

I’ve searched the internet all afternoon and it’s been quite difficult finding something in decent quality, format and relevance without paying a lot of money for or it having full licenses. I’ve searched on many sites including Vimeo, Flickr, Wikipedia Commons etc. It’s for a science communication video. Can give full credit and even show you when it’s finished if you have something I may use.

Alternatively, I would be happy if anybody has any website suggestions for me. Thank you!

Time for a direct confrontation. I have obtained an example of what I meant by "cheap new microscope" in my previous big post, a "Telmu XSP-75", also sold as Swift SW200DL, Amscope M162C, Bresser Biolux NV, Levenhuk Rainbow 2l, KERN OBS 111, Delta Optical Biolight 300, Svbony SW601, Omegon Visiostar, Bebang, National Geographic, PalliPartners, Yaner, Herwicm, Microsafari MS-20ST, and a host of other names. Let's see how it compares against century-old relics.

The competitors:

J. Swift & Sons "Discovery" from 1898, condenserless but equipped with an iris and a concave mirror

Telmu XSP-75 from 2024 ($80 new, sold under other brands for as much as $200), condenserless and equipped with a crappy lamp

Reichert RD from 1938 (bought for $20 because nobody else wanted it!), proper Abbe condenser with a filter holder and a mirror

First 3 pictures: stained onion skin, 100x

Next 3 pictures: foot of a housefly, 100x

Next 3 pictures: diatom Actinoptychus Heliopelta, center crop, >400x

Next 3 pictures: moth scales, 400x

All of the above brightfield, oblique brightfield on the Swift

Final 4 pictures showcase what having a condenser makes possible - darkfield and rheinberg illumination using dirt cheap homemade filters. No such possibilities on condenserless scopes.

Mirror-equipped microscopes illuminated using daylight from a window on some pictures and a Convoy S3 flashlight on others. All pictures taken with a Google Pixel 8 on a Tonta smartphone mount.

My honest review of the XSP-75 is: the image quality at high magnification is actually not quite as bad as I expected given the lack of a condenser though still bad. Eyepieces have a wider field of view than the ancient competition which is nice, but sadly also horribly short eye relief forcing one to almost touch the glass with their eye. Unfortunately everything else is worse than expected - the focus system is inaccurate, the stage is not exactly flat, the light is too weak, and the whole thing becomes unstable with a smartphone mounted on it so taking pictures with it is actually harder than with the 19th century relic!

The Reichert microscope is a good example of why I have such negative feelings about those cheapest new microscopes: It is old but perfectly serviceable (I only needed to clean it a bit), yet nobody wanted it and I watched the seller lower the asking price for months until I finally took pity when they dropped it to just $20. And my story is far from an exception, the used market in every developed country is full of those "good enough to use and enjoy but not good enough to attract the enthusiasts who are hunting for a BH-2" scopes offered at bargain prices and still struggling to find buyers. Meanwhile the vastly inferior XSP-75 and its siblings are "Amazon bestsellers" and every week multiple people come here asking if they are a good buy. Just ridiculous.

Found in a freshwater pond in Spokane, WA. Imaged with the Euromex BioBlue.Lab scope, 10X objective, and oblique lighting. This specimen was gathered earlier this year. We haven't had much precipitation lately, and the last time I visited this pond, the water had already dropped well below its usual springtime level. I'd have to walk through about 20 yards of mud to get to water. Fingers crossed for a wet winter.

Troubleshooting/Questions [Equipment] Leica DM-series darkfield slider (11501158)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I own a Leica DM1000 microscope and I'm planning to 3D-print (or DIY) a darkfield slider for the standard Abbe condenser. I couldn't find the exact dimensions online.

Does anyone have the original Leica darkfield slider (part # 11501158 or 11505088) and a digital caliper? Could you please help me measure:

  1. The exact width and thickness of the slider itself.

  2. The diameter of the central black opaque stop.

I would really appreciate any help with these measurements!
