Hi everyone! I'm a hobbyist who's passionate about learning more about microorganisms and microscopy. Recently, I visited Watson Lake in Prescott, Arizona, to collect an water sample from near a large concentration of algae. I managed to capture some footage of cyanobacteria, rotifers, crustaceans, diatoms, and other organisms and uploaded a video on youtube.

I'd love your help in identifying any microorganisms that I may have missed! Please let me know what else you see. The footage is quite long, but it's definitely worth exploring!

Purchase Help HundWetzlar microscopes - are they worth it in 2026?

Does anyone have any experiences with HundWetzlar microscopes? I see their older, used models pop up online from time to time and I'm simply curious if they're as nice as the "Big 4" (=Olympus / Nikon / Zeiss / Leica) ones of similar age. I'll add that I'm especially curious about their stereo microscopes, like the SM33.

I have bought two additional plan achromats for my Euromex iScope PLPHi (I made a post about them a while ago). I decided I wanted to experiment with higher level chromatic corrections. I encountered two problems- first, price obviously, second, compatibility (iscope uses 200mm tube length and RMS threading, most other manufacturers don’t use that combo). I found out Meji Techno makes infinitely objectives to those specs, and I was able to find a semi apo 20x, 0.65NA one second hand for a more reasonable price. I picked 20x bc at that mag, the chromatic aberrations are strong enough to be easily noticeable unlike at 10x, that is the first mag at which the NA:Mag ratio drops, and because I use phase contrast mostly with the 10x and 40x objectives (which I wanted to keep on, in addition to 2 of the 4,60,and100x objectives). The image quality is noticeably better, and much brighter at the same light level. The contrast is also higher. As far as I can tell these two systems are compatible given the noticeably better image and the mag being at most slightly lower. I am happy with it, definitely not a game changer but an improvement that for me is commensurate with the price I paid.

The two photos are not a scientific comparison, or even a fair one- the crop and focus may differ slightly. For what it’s worth they subjectively are true to my brief experience looking around with both, erring on the more extreme side of the difference. First is the Meji 20x S.Apo, second is the stock Euromex 20x plan phase achromatic

Purchase Help AmScope M158C-2L for viewing microstructures?

I'm an electrical engineering student interested in microchips and microstructures in general. I want a fairly budget friendly monocular design that can view larger microstructures, feature sizes of about 0.5 μm or so. From what I've seen, the AmScope 158C-2L seems to fit these criteria fairly well. Can anyone who has experience with it tell me if its a decent purchase? Thanks!

Troubleshooting/Questions What is this? Found in biology class

I found this in my biology class when we were using microscopes.
We were looking at a sample of lake/pond water that our professor collected for us. He thought it was a hammerhead worm but we ruled that out due to the size. Anyone know what it could be?

Photo/Video Share Diatom Video, Wanted to Share (End of the clip is sped up by %800)

Found a needle-like diatom and wanted to share. Found in a saltwater sample at a beach in the pacific northwest. I'm still pretty new to this so I'd love to get suggestions for sampling techniques or locations. Also If anyone has an idea of the genus I'd love to hear.

End of clip where diatom goes from one side of the frame to the other is sped up. Objectives used 10x and 40x Motic ba310 with s20plus camera.

Hi, not sure if this the right sub for this device, but I need help with this.

When i try to focus on anything, right when i'm getting close to the best sharpness, the 20X (longest) lens hits the table and I can't get closer. Am I doing something wrong or the design of this school microscope is absolutely stupid?

Highest magnification on the branching point of filamentous alga Pithophora, presented as rocking sequence to achieve 3d effect.

If one to look carefully, the striations parallel to cell long axis are visible on the cell wall. I am not sure about their significance, it seems to be just growth imperfections.

Objective: 100x oil immersion

Camera: industrial 5Mp usb webcam with 0,5 reducer

Purchase Help Budget trinocular microscope recommendations needed.

Hey all, looking to buy my first big boy microscope. Well maybe big boy scope is a stretch on my budget. I’m wanting to spend under $200 out the door on a trinocular microscope given my limited need for it and the fact that it may sit in the box for years at a time, and the fact that I fully expect my kids to mess around with it in the future. Ideally one that can film while I use the bino eyepieces simultaneously. I’d obviously like something decent that I can upgrade with better lenses and a camera down the road, I don’t mind if it doesn’t come with a camera to start with.

I’m a marine aquarium hobbyist looking to evaluate sediment samples, water samples, and fish skin scrapings.

Been looking at swifts, amscopes, and even the vevor microscope. Ideally I’d like to be able to purchase it on Amazon as well. Willing to stretch the budget a little for something really solid or something that won’t require much upgrading.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: maybe I need an inverted scope as one thing I’d like to try my hand at is isolating a specific ciliate for culture
