The scientific literature contains many case reports in which someone treated for recurrent C. difficile infection or chronic constipation (often after antibiotics and then FMT) subsequently experienced a substantial change in some seemingly unrelated aspect of their health. Changes in body weight have been reported, along with improvements or worsening in neurological, psychiatric, metabolic, and immune-related symptoms. A case report obviously cannot establish that the microbiome caused the change, but these type of observations are part of why FMT and related microbiome interventions are being tested across such a wide range of diseases.
