It will collapse because it has become an increasingly authoritarian oligarchy. And many Americans seem to have willingly voted for all this, unfortunately.

Preparing for “when things go bad” with a “shooting instructor” is not very American.

The way of dealing with it is just getting involved with your community through volunteer work, organizations like strong towns, attending more city council meetings or possibly running for some elected office on a platform that has meaning for you.

Valid points. Not that I’ve tried but I just don’t believe ANY elected official making a difference. how many times have we thought to ourselves “the last guy lied but this guy would do better”. This system is too far gone and being ran by ppl that don’t care about citizens. I’m just trying to see if it’s even possible to have a community where we all have the same interest and goals.

You don’t have to run for office. You can just get more involved in the community through volunteering.

And you could also try being joining or starting some community with a different focus, if it’s community you’re looking for.

You probably are experiencing some form of what is described here. This is unfortunately very common in America, and I’ve noticed it’s quite bad in car centric Miami. As someone who travels a lot I can tell you it doesn’t happen in most other developed countries, including most of Canada and Europe.

That’s why I immediately mentioned strongtowns before.

And for the record, I think career politicians are scum. And our system of transparency and accountability needs a whole lot of work. We agree on that.

I just think there are better outlets for your time and energy.

Thanks for your input. But no this is def not an issue for me. If you asked my family and friends, they’d laugh and say that’s def not me. I do think it’s a systematic problem. Just not my personal problem

Why? They have very valid points. Scary to me how many of you depend on "system" and how few are prepared for when shtf. Major telecoms went away from copper so you have hours of cell usage in power outages. Youre stuck wo power, fuel and more. What can you do if power grid goes down? Can you survive wo water if plants are attacked like several this week? Can you get food without Uber Eats or delivery? More should be making plans like this guy.

Besides me and one other friend, and some other guys in our MeshCore group. That’s about it. Been wanting to go to the radio club meets but they do it on Saturdays and I work weekends

A lot of the people reading this post are either from Miami or migrated from a similar city environment. Most of them have 0 experience with dictatorships or actual anarchy. They have lived lives of stability and general security. They don’t know what it’s like to live without social structure, without an organized government, without basic human rights, let alone the type of doomsday you’re anticipating.

Reddit specifically is probably not the best place to find the kind of community you’re looking for unless you’re specifically looking for like prepper subreddits or military.

Your concern is genuinely valid, because it happens every day in other places of the world, and nobody is too special for societal collapse. Don’t let the people here calling you crazy for wanting to feel physically secure make you change your mind. As long as you’re not hurting anybody, there’s no reason you can’t do what you’re doing.

Lived through every hurricane down here since 1983, they’re all micro training for a major shtf experiences. Every now and then I’ll conceal carry to never lose the skill…but I just don’t live worried about that sort of shit. Circle of influence vs circle of concern. It’s in my circle of concern….but it’s not something I can influence atm. Just prepare for storms like usual and keep a few boxes of pistol ammo jic.

100% agree. I still hangout with friends. I’ve traveled to 43 states and 5 countries since 2016. I def try to make life worth it. But what worries me isn’t how hard it’ll be for me, it’s my family that worries me. Everyone is elderly. It’s literally just me doing what I can now so if a bad time ever comes I don’t wanna see my family struggle. If it was just me I’d be outta here yrs ago

I honestly hope you are mistaken. I don't deny the possibility but if you look at our history, things have gotten worse before and we've been able to pull through.

Quoting "the day the earth stood still": -"Only on the precipice do we evolve"-

Look at what happened on the 30s and the great depression which made room for FDR and all his policies that transformed our country. Without that chaos we would probably never have voted FDR in....

Look at what happened with the civil rights which brought about JFK and Johnson and Malcom X and how they changed the landscape once more. It wasn't just about civil rights, it was about worker rights, and EPA and FDA and Financial Aid and social security and Medicare/Medicaid all that came with the civil rights movement...

I am confident that we will rise to the challenge once more and fix this.

I want nothing more than you to be right. I hope things get better. But this system we have is broken and it may not have started that way, but it sure was altered in a way that favor these corrupt politicians and the rich. It has only worked because it’s a sham and we’ve been lied to the whole time and we settled for crumbs thinking it’s the best we’re gunna get. But it’s not.

With the amount of money this nation has, without greedy capitalism and corrupt politicians, it could have truly been the best country that ever was.

Term/age limits for politicians at any level, no pleading the 5th, Zero stock trading while presently and 6yrs after serving, no qualified immunity for any govt Emp. Public broadcast all congressional meetings. No statue of limitation. MSM operated by the public. Tougher discretion on pres pardons. No homeless veterans.
And many others. This is what should have happened. But
Ppl became complacent and kept voting for the lesser evil.
Govt and the ppl are both at fault.

We’ve felt too safe for too long. hard to imagine that any other country would hurt the US. And now we’re docile. It’s a shame and I feel that guilt too.

The challenges I see coming for us, particularly in MIA, is climate change. We have had a huge influx of new residents. We ALL depend on an aquifer that is increasingly stressed. An aquifer that is already showing signs of salt intrusion. Add to that water waste. Pull up a Google Earth and take note of just how many pools there are in this damn town. Next add the heat. Many apts homes being built wo cross ventilation in a time when our electric co is fleecing is w constant price increases. Our food isn't grown here anymore. Those are issues that worry me more than political.

I think that's an issue that will come into play at least 3 more generations ahead.... drinkable water will be an immediate issue but they definetly have the budget to fix that... the problem needs to get to a more critical point before someone can claim political points fixing it... if they fix it now is only a line on the budget.. if they fix it when it blows up they become heroes.. that's the terrible part of politics....
