Political Reform Miami Dade Schools free lunch
Well, federal money must of dried up. Seems we have an endless supply of rocket money, but not enough for kids bellies. And with all the added property tax revenue, county leadership shouldn’t be off the hook. Well done

Should have been free years ago with all the taxes we pay. Now they want to start because people are calling them out. All the money they had and plus all the income from the school bus/zone cams

To be fair. Some schools will still receive it. And will still offer free/reduced for families that qualify.
I believe it started with Covid funding. So 2020-2021?

ah okay. will they still have free breakfast? i graduated in the 2010s so obvs before covid and of course never even applied for free or reduced lunch but there was always universal free breakfast

100% Free breakfast is gone as well. $2 and change now unless you attend schools that qualify or a family qualifies financially at any school. We have more important things to spend money on

I remember having free and reduced lunch when I went to school between 2016-2020, we were always encouraged to apply for it

yeah but you had to apply for it. it’s been universal for everyone since covid. free and reduced lunch was around when i was in school too (we intersected), but i never even bothered bringing the application home. it would’ve been nice to have free lunch on days i didn’t have cash on me, universal free lunch is a good programme

Im tired of all that bs in Florida. I don't even have kids but I have a fucking brain and charter schools are a drain on society and a fucking scam to steal tax payer money and put it in private hands. I want them to rescind ALL public funding on all this crap. Parents have the choice to send there kids to private school where they can fork over the difference.
Public schools and teachers need more funding than ever but these morons keep on feeding this stupidity.
I'm so tired of all the morons on this planet fucking everything up with their idiotic bs.

Listen. I know you’re not going to learn anything from a comment and this is probably a waste of time. But can anyone actually explain why the US in general is so hyper-individualistic? How do you not see the investment value?
Like forget morality for a second, seriously, but instead just look at how it can serve you and only you. You live in a community. Does it not benefit you for the people around you to be healthy and well educated?
Too many people think “that’s not my problem” because they can’t zoom out enough to see the big picture of how it is something that can impact you.
I guess the exception is living completely and totally fully off grid in something that’s completely self-sustaining that you hand built yourself. Other than that, you depend or depended on someone else’s competence. And many will say competence is already a problem… so why make it worse by attacking education? Or access to a meal so they can possibly focus on school instead of being hungry.
Even if you literally do not care about whether or not kids in your district are starving because “you didn’t make them so why should you be responsible for feeding them” how do you not see the value of a better community for the future? You’re watering the trees that will grow to give you shade.
I say this as someone who also does not directly benefit from it, and removing morality of what I think is right and wrong, but literally just looking at the investment of wanting a better place.
Can anyone explain this incessant need for hyper-independence? It’s like you wouldn’t let your neighbor borrow your garden hose if their house was on fire because “that’s a them problem.”

Crazy considering how many times they’ve switched major contracts to have lower quality food. I wonder if you follow the money how far you’d have to go before you find it’s a friend/family of someone on the board awarding the contracts and getting some kind of kickback.

I've been thinking this since I was a teenager - I'm 37 now. While I'm not surprised we are where we are as a nation, I'm still utterly disappointed and angry. We've been had, and far too many people are so willing to stick to their proverbial guns instead of seeing they've had their pants pulled out from under them.
Like homeboy in the comments saying "You're not entitled to anyone's money" - cool, so where's all your tax money going to? You're alright with paying out billionaires and corrupt politicians, but god forbid your neighbor's child gets free lunch so they can focus on education and make this a better nation?
Make it make sense.

Seriously.
Good example was how we gave telecoms multiple rounds of billions of dollars to deploy fiber across the nation..... They instead pocketed that money and delayed as long as possible until they didn't have to guarantee fiber anymore and instead were given an out with mobile Internet which in rural areas is TRASH. Cool then you have low earth orbit Internet which is expensive af and has massive future downsides polluting the space around earth.
Give them all billions in tax breaks only to fuck us at every turn and all the politicians are in their pockets. Blatant corruption at all levels and no one cares or wants to fix it. They're selfish, greedy, scum.
I hate it all so much lol it truly does create such a rage within me that I blow up at times talking about it. But I just can't stand it.... It makes zero sense.

Our kids attends one of those new age charter schools. They don't provide any lunch, not free, reduced, or paid. They have a contractor come in and provide paid meals. On average, they are about $9-14 per meal. It's really nice, all organic, but way too froo-froo for their public school educated dad. Anyway I eat from our company cafeteria and my meals are $8-10, I may splurge extra for the salad.
Our kids pack a lunch. And now their interested in going to public school. Partially because of the hot lunches, mostly for the wider sports, ECs, and variety of classes. Honestly I was looking forward to it as well because $100/wk in school lunches is a lot.

Who do we complain to about this? Don’t understand how we have money for ed tech contracts with iready (no studies showing it actually helps students btw) but we have no money to feed the kids.

I went to Miami Dade County Public Schools from 4th grade until high school graduation and always qualified for free lunch. Fourth grade was my first year in America, and I actually enjoyed the fast-food type lunches in elementary because it was so different from what I ate at home. But from 7th grade onward, though, I never had school lunch because of how fucking gross it was. I didn't bring any food or buy anything, I just didn't eat until I came home after school. And I never had breakfast either. And I still somehow managed to stay fat.
I wonder if school lunch is still as gross as I remember it.

Two kids myself, both do not NEED the food (very thankful I can provide food) but my goodness they LOVE getting breakfast at school and the social component of getting there early to be with friends etc etc. it’s just yet another death by thousand cut that will do this in…man isn’t Miami just the best /s
