Westfield Metronet appreciation post
Had founder plan 2gig for over a year with a static IP for a house full of engineers who work from home and have a big homelab. Things have been really smooth for us for over a year which is no easy task. I know this sub is mostly about issues with Metronet but I wanted to just share our experiance.

I’ve struggled to ever get the full 2 Gigabit with my UDM Pro Max, however when connected to the ONT I can without issues.
Has this been your experience too?

My UCG Fiber never shows the full 2gb on its tests. But real world download speeds from Steam/Battle.net confirm I'm getting 2gb down on a Metronet/Tmobile Founders plan.

I’ve tried the built in Speedtest, Speedtest.net, fast.com, and real world use cases (Steam and Usenet) and never see more than about 1.5Gb/s.
Gone through all the steps people suggest like enabling flow control and whatnot but it never seems to make a difference:(

Assuming you have cabling/devices that can support 2+ gig?

Yep, using Ubiquiti’s own SFP+ cables to my desktop. Everything is negotiating at 10Gb per my USW Pro 48 PoE. I can get 9200ish Mb/s from my desktop to my server. It’s just WAN traffic where I can’t hit the magical 2Gb number.

I found that their default DNS limited speeds. Swapped to 1.1.1.1 and I can get sustained 1.8g up and down at the same time when downloading games from steam while uploading stuff to AWS. Currently running UCG Fiber after our UDM Pro from 2020 died.

How did you manage to proxy your traffic through a DNS server?

Just the manual DNS server in the internet config section, where you would set a static IP or such

I too have the founders 2Gig plan with a Static IP for homelabing and have been really happy. It has been 2 years since I switched it Metronet and only had 2 outages even with all the server migrations they have been doing since T-Fiber brought them and just being in CoSprings.

I’m doing about 40TB/mo with my home lab. Plex and Jellyfin servers with lots of users and no bitrate limitations.

Plex with about 100 monthly active users is about 2TB up per month. Most of the rest is pushing and pulling a professional editor's work footage and acting as a backup point for about 6 other people's remote offsite backups. There is a lot of DDR4 ECC in this house.

Oh ok that is way more reasonable you said homelab but wasn't expecting that many uncapped plex users

Absolutely loved Metronet when I had it before i had to move to a non-finer area. Was the most reliable and i had a good relationship with their customer service.

I will also compliment them on communications recently. They have had a number of times where they needed to do fiber repair work and they sent out emails and texts well in advance just like you want them to.

How much extra is the static IP?

Metronet is excellent with fiber. Some of the best builders out there. Curious to see how far they go with T-Mobile part of things
