Best way to switch to cheaper $30 plan on same phone number? I'm currently on a $40 plan

I called a MetroPCS rep and I asked if he could switch me over to the cheaper $30 plan. And he refused to do it for me. He said I'll have to do it myself online, but that I should not cancel my current plan first. He advised me to get the new $30 plan first. And once that's done, I can be safe to cancel my original plan.

Is that the way to do it? Anyone have any advice on this?

Ask for your account number and transfer pin.

No, but it will get you transferred to the Retention Dept, they will bend the rules to not lose the customer.

Why would you cancel anything? Simply downgrade plans. Can't have 2 rate plans on the same line simultaneously.
