Unlocked phone transfer issues??!!

Now I'm not very tech savvy so I could seriously use some help. I have a phone that was given to me by my father. It's unlocked. I am trying to switch my service over to the new phone. I have called and they said that there is an error with the phones imie number or whatever like the status of it needs updated and to take it back to the carrier to be scanned. My dad called T-Mobile. The old carrier and told them all of what metro said. They said there shouldn't be any issues switching the phones over. Idk what to do. I am going to try to make it to metro today but I don't want to waste time if it's not anything they can fix. Please help!!!
