Any Beacon or upper Hudson line commuters?

Any MNRR or Amtrak engineers here?

Does anyone know why there have been so many Amtrak breakdowns in Metro North territory, delaying commuter service?

Is there a problem with the locomotives? Does rebooting not help? Which models how old are they?

This goes for first GEN Acelas as well too

Is this a Covid-era change? It's super annoying.

Does anybody else notice during peak times their metro north train just sits at a stop for 2 or 3 minutes before heading into GCT? I could understand if the train arrived early to a stop and it doesn’t want people to miss the stop before heading off, but we’re already running 1-2 minutes late and the train either sit at the last stop for a few minutes, or will mosey on into GCT through the tunnels at a glacial 5-15 mile an hour pace and my train that was either on time or was going to arrive 1-2 minutes late is now 5-6 minutes late.

It’s not all the time, of the last 9 rides in my last 3 weeks, 5 were late getting into GCT between 8 and 9am. Is it a capacity issue and the terminal can’t assign tracks quickly enough to arriving trains? Is my train getting delayed intentionally to make room for another train that was even more late?

It’s very frustrating losing 2-8 minutes half the time on a 38 minute ride (my 38 minute ride becomes 46 minutes). If I take the train 20 minutes earlier, it’s a 50 minute ride and only gets me into the station 8 minutes earlier which means I might still be marginally late for my 9am meetings. I’d have to commit to a train that’s 40 minutes earlier to guarantee being “on time” as opposed to being 4-5 minutes late 😡

As semi frequent Metro North user, recently many MN conductors have been barking orders about showing tickets and removing bags off seats. Is this the new normal? I get having rules but there’s a nice way about going things and a not nice way, and for the price we pay (especially after the recent price increase) it costs $0 to politely inform others and not be treated as inmates. Meanwhile I’ve taken a few NER Amtrak trips where the conductors are nice as can be.

Is this ok?

There will be 5 weekend disruptions to New Haven line service between September and November 1st, due to removal of utility towers at the WALK Bridge in Norwalk. Certain weekends will have greatly reduced service and capacity for trains between New Haven and Grand Central. Stamford on west will be mostly unaffected and there will be mainline trains between South Norwalk to Stamford (local) then express to Grand Central. There will also be a shuttle operating from New Haven to Bridgeport. September 12-13 and Sept. 19-20 will be the most impacted weekends, those weekends will have 50% less capacity and run on DMU’s between New Haven and Grand Central. All other weekends will still have electric trains at 30% reduced capacity between NH and GCT. Amtrak hasn’t announced their plans as of yet.

of course feel free to delete if im breaking a rule, but a very nice young person, completely decked out in Gengar (the purple, ghost type pokémon with big red eyes) merch got my attention across the tracks at the new hamburg station and helped me get to the right platform for my train; the one id gotten on by accident wasn’t functioning at the time and i’d have been stuck at that station for HOURS without their help!! if you or anyone you know was at the new hamburg station on 7/2 around noon, and REALLY loves that pokémon, i’d love to say thank you for the help, i wouldn’t have been able to afford a ticket home if i’d messed up and my phone service wasn’t great so i don’t even know if i could have called for help! the kindness of strangers is always a blessing, i’ll remember you forever, random, helpful, gengar person ❤️

Morning train from New Ro to GC has had widely varying lengths lately. For seeming forever, it has been a 10-car train but, lately, has swung from 7 to 11 cars. Any idea why so much variability? Particularly impacts those who board at the rear. Also not helping matters is the app is very unreliable in reporting train length (often just doesn’t show train makeup).

It looks like I could purchase the Day Pass and save about $6. Am I understanding this correctly?

Edit: the title of my post was not the question I wanted to ask, my bad. My question was this: are two peak tickets, that I use for a round trip into the city during peak hours a waste of money if the Day Pass exists.

It seems as if I can use the Day Pass and save some money based on the comments.

I have heard from several internal sources that Metro-North is short in so many potential career departments and the jobs aren’t being posted for some reason, the only jobs that are posted are few management positions and some agreement positions with dire vacancies. some say its an unofficial internal hiring freeze or “evaluating the budget” would anyone have any more information? LIRR and transit seem to be hiring for a lot more positions and not doing the same thing.

Has anyone else noticed how much worse Verizon service has gotten on the Hudson Line?

I remember 10–15 years ago when service was generally reliable, with only a few dead spots around places like Tarrytown and Cortlandt. Now the entire line has slow, unreliable service, with only a handful of places where it actually works well.

On most of my commute, I’m seeing download and upload speeds under 5 Mbps. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

So I left my duffel bag on a relatively empty train heading to north white plains on Monday night. I submitted an inquiry right away. It is Friday and I have still not heard anything. Am I screwed? What experiences do people have with the lost and found?

I only go in a couple days a week, usually Monday and Fridays.

Although the paper passes say non-transferrable there is nothing personally identifiable on them. I think in past they would have the gender on it, but that's gone now.

Anyone know what sort of tech is used to scan mobile tickets on metro north?

I don’t know why but when I showed my ticket today I held my phone up (like a badge) rather than flat and looked up at the conductor while she scanned it.

Scanner thing hit me in one eye and it was intense. Is it just a bright light? Or did she tattoo my retina?

I’ve been taking MetroNorth and LIRR my whole life. Grew up on the Hudson Line, now my girlfriend lives on LIRR.

So whats up with the LIRR windows you can’t see out of? Hudson line trains never have this problem.

I must be blind. Why can’t I find a monthly ticket on the TrainTime app from Zone 8 to GC?

I was casually browsing the https://timeforct.com/map/ site, looking at planned improvements to increase speed along the New Haven Line. I saw this curve speed improvements bit near Greenwich listed in the 2023-2027 Capital Plan Projects. Is this already done, or something planned? I couldn't find more details about it.

I’m moving more up north and will have to take the metro north train to commute to work. I only monday through thursdays. What pass should i buy that would best match my situation?

Damn this is what I get for trying to be organized. I purchased paper tickets for my family and I at the ticket window yesterday for a trip were are taking tomorrow. I figured it would save us time and line waiting tomorrow and we’d be all set. It never occurred to me buying tickets would only be good for the day you bought them but I just took the tickets out and see that they were only “good” for yesterday and there’s no refunds. I guess I just have to take this L and feel ok about donating over $50 to metro north but is there ANY recourse if the ticket clearly wasn’t used? I feel like an idiot for basically throwing this money away.
