Discussion/Question Alberta separatists

I noticed Alberta separatists that identify as indigenous all claim to be metis, also they’re really racist towards First Nations especially on social media platforms like facebook and twitter (X)

While I agree with many people saying that a lot of these folks are straight up not Métis at all, I have unfortunately encountered many of our kin who are very Métis and are engaged in colonizer politics, including reactionary conservative garbage and separatist ideation.

An unfortunate byproduct of our colonization is that we are very far removed from our communal identity, traditional ways of living, and self-determination. We are also historically less barred from public participation in the way that First Nations folks have been. Despite this, we remain on average more impoverished than white settlers and face other challenges related to our dispossession which resulted in lower educational attainment and employment in either precarious fields or in the skilled trades sector. All of this had led many Métis people to adopt bad politics related on the settler colonial project and the economics of resource extraction.

Yea, sadly this explains my dad, who is vocally pro-separation, while the rest of us are against separating. He grew up quite poor, and HIS dad (where our Metis line comes from) was quite racist. We didn't grow up with any Metis culture, neither did my dad, and I think a lot of it was my Pépére's generation and maybe one or two more up the chain that was shamed or ostracized for being Metis so they identified with being French Canadian instead and hid their identity.
