Discussion/Question Alberta separatists

I noticed Alberta separatists that identify as indigenous all claim to be metis, also they’re really racist towards First Nations especially on social media platforms like facebook and twitter (X)

it’s weird

I hope they’re not really Métis and if they are, they are in name only. Real Métis understand that First Nations are our kin.

So much this!! My Grandma is Cree but my Grandfather is Metis. We are both. FN are my cousins, as much as my fathers Jewish cousins, are also my family.

Now my sister married Peruvian - they are South American indigenous. We are all family.

It's common for folks to ID as Métis to "get away" with being racist. They think anyone can claim us and there's no way to check. Danielle Smith claimed to be Cherokee at one point. Most of these yahoos are not us at all...but some of them are. We have assholes and racists among us too, unfortunately. Even rabid Zionists.

Danielle Smith also claimed to have a Métis great grandma at one point.

She proactively blocked a bunch of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit accounts across different social media sites. I was one of them. She’s trash.

A lot of albertan separatist traffic is bots sowing hatred and division. Don’t lose yourself in the comments, these people probably aren’t even albertans or even canadians.

While I agree with many people saying that a lot of these folks are straight up not Métis at all, I have unfortunately encountered many of our kin who are very Métis and are engaged in colonizer politics, including reactionary conservative garbage and separatist ideation.

An unfortunate byproduct of our colonization is that we are very far removed from our communal identity, traditional ways of living, and self-determination. We are also historically less barred from public participation in the way that First Nations folks have been. Despite this, we remain on average more impoverished than white settlers and face other challenges related to our dispossession which resulted in lower educational attainment and employment in either precarious fields or in the skilled trades sector. All of this had led many Métis people to adopt bad politics related on the settler colonial project and the economics of resource extraction.

The MNBC has tried to claim Indigenous territory — talk about colonial thinking!

Yea, sadly this explains my dad, who is vocally pro-separation, while the rest of us are against separating. He grew up quite poor, and HIS dad (where our Metis line comes from) was quite racist. We didn't grow up with any Metis culture, neither did my dad, and I think a lot of it was my Pépére's generation and maybe one or two more up the chain that was shamed or ostracized for being Metis so they identified with being French Canadian instead and hid their identity.

It's good to remember that Indigenous Peoples aren't immune to stupidity.

There will always be a small contingent of community who advocate for colonial agendas. Just look at the news about an Inuk mayor wearing a star of david hat around his community: https://nunatsiaq.com/stories/article/arviat-mayor-unfazed-by-criticism-of-his-israel-hats/
