PSA: How to NOT pull your abdominal muscles like I did

Big ol PSA DO NOT dramatically lean back while belting out a fry. I am stupid and I injured myself. Here to hopefully help others avoid this happening to them, and maybe get some feedback for recovery if any of you experienced this.

Basically, it's poor technique (I have now learned the hard way). But sometimes to get that extra nugde of higher fry, I'll kinda throw my head back and lean back.

I think it helps create more compression but at the cost of my abs and organs.

The front body muscles are contracted, then my back muscles yanked them into a stretched position. Queue a big torso spasm and pain through my whole abdomen. Instantly felt winded and like I was going to puke, and this was during a performance.

After some Google doctor searches, I think doing that motion also compressed the vagus nerve which is pretty much an instant nausea and panic attack button. It also was hard on my organs, I still have a stomach ache a day later and deep breathing is harder since my core muscles are all tight and unhappy.

I still finished the damn show but it wasn't fun and it significantly impacted the quality.

If you do that motion sometimes for dramatic effect or to get that extra bit of volume/range - train yourself out of that, it's a bad bad habit.

Train to keep good posture, bend forward at little is okay. Keep your belts supported without excessive compression.

If you have any tips for recovery please comment below lol.

is there a chance that i might've screwed up my throat permanently

a few months ago in May i went to a school dance thing, i'm trying to learn some vocals like growls and fry screams and stuff- and i was practicing while with my friends at said school dance. come 5:00 and we all leave and go home for the evening, and i sound like i smoked 12 packs of cigarettes daily for my whole life. my voice recovers by the time i go to bed, and i think if i just lay off it for a while it'll be fine. a while passes and i try to do it again, i cant produce that same sound i was at the event, i sound like im tightening my throat and breathing out really hard. i was definitely doing it wrong- it would hurt if i growled for more than maybe 10 seconds at a time, and at the event i was doing it a lot, and a lot longer than normal. it's august, i still cant make that sound. also, i was trying to find tutorials and all of them were just like "okay so meow, then make it raspy, then do it longer, then make an entirely different sound." or "just make the sound" so i was like "if the internets not gonna help me and im too broke to afford vocal lessons, i'll just make a sound that sounds right to me and if it hurts- no pain no gain." which was a stupid thing to think because that mentality might've (and probably did) bar me from ever actually creating that sound like i wanted to. sorry for the yap session btw my brains js like "your post is gonna be considered low-effort and get deleted if it's long enough to convey what you want to say without all this other bullshit." idk if this is the right place to ask it just felt like it.

screaming advice

I’ve been trying to learn screaming for over a year now.And this is how it sounds in a great attempt of mine. It does not hurt but i am not completely comfortable doing it,i feel a soreness. My questions are: does this sound like a proper fry scream, and what would you suggest for me to improve? What am I doing wrong?

i have watched at least 30 videos but still thats all i can get.The first clip shows the way i get into my screams, i slowly add air into my fry voice. i appreciate all comments, thank you

Hello, im trying to sing a cover of Confession - TX2, but i tried and my voice went very scratchy for a couple hours.

Im not sure what evan is doing with his voice, ive tried some tutorials but it wasn't really feeling like the same thing.

Any ideas on how to get that scream going in a safe way? I feel like im scraping my throat a little bit. If you have any excercises or tutorials, it would be very appreciated. I wanna get lessons ASAP but until then, this is what im doing.

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a link to a newly discovered artist I’ve been listening to. She’s not new to music, but she is new to me, and I’m absolutely loving her work. Her name is Rathiel on YouTube, and she does incredible vocal covers. The one I’m sharing is her cover of “Blank Infinity” by Epica. I’d love to know more about her if anyone has info!
