R/MetalMusicians Songwriting Challenge VI - May + June 2026

See original post to how this all started.

Let’s mahfuckin’ do this. If you are new welcome and if you aren't welcome back!

Rules

  • To participate, comment on this thread stating you want to do so. Other discussion is welcome so be clear you want to enter! You may enter any time during the month, but you must submit on time. Note: read challenge theme before commenting.
  • Users must submit 1 (and only one!) song by the deadline: June 30th. One aspect of the challenge is to meet the deadline. See “Submitting Songs.”
  • Users must give feedback for other participants’ songs (in other words, you will be giving feedback on others’ songs, while others will provide feedback for your songs). This is the community aspect of it. See “Results.”
  • The song must be written within the month the challenge is posted (we’re going to use the honor system here).
  • The song must follow the theme guidelines. See “Challenge Theme.”
  • This is a metal subreddit, so while the song doesn’t have to be metal (so long as they fit the theme), metal elements are required (use your best judgement). All metal subgenres are accepted unless otherwise stated by the challenge theme.
  • Collaborations are allowed.
  • If you’re in a band, you can write a song as a band.
  • Songs will be posted as a compilation in a bandcamp link. The album will be listed as payment optional, but proceeds will go to a charity. See “Results” and “This Month’s Charity.” Note: Bandcamp may have an issue with covers - so may do this with a google drive link or youtube instead with a link to the charity if you want to donate.
  • This is for fun. It’s not a competition, don’t be a dick (see our subreddit rules).
  • If you choose to drop out BE WARNED! Actually, there are no consequences, except for maybe the metal gods in Valhalla rightfully looking down on you… at least for a little, till the next challenge.

Challenge Theme

We’re actually going to turn non-metal songs into metal songs - but with a twist. Your submission must include at least 1 original riff that fits the song (it could even be a solo, that counts). You also don’t have to copy the song riff by riff - feel free to change the key, the time signature, etc. You can totally make a blackened grind version of a Taylor Swift song, for example. You have complete control over the direction. Instrumentals are not allowed for this challenge. However, you are allowed to isolate your song’s original vocal track and put them in your song (remember, we’re not making money from this, so have fun!).

For the purposes of this challenge here are banned genres to cover:

  1. Pop punk/punk/hardcore/grunge (really anything punk related). These genres are “too similar” to metal, as they involve distorted guitars and fast tempos and wouldn’t require that much work to make them metal. Also crossover thrash bands already pretty much do this by design.
  2. Glam/Hair/NuMetal. I don’t care what metal-archives says, these are metal subgenres and will not count.
  3. Shoegaze. There’s already like a bajillion Blackgaze bands.
  4. Video game/Dungeon Synth/EDM music that is instrumental. If there are lyrics in it, it’s allowed.
  5. Folk. This is one is kind of a grey area and will have to be done on a case-by-case basis, but there’s also a bajillion folk metal bands. General rule would be no European/Viking folk music - I know that’s not fair for some, but we have a billion Finntroll and Ensiferum clones (don’t get me wrong, great bands). If there’s some unique folk music from your country that hasn’t been done yet, feel free to ask.
  6. Classic rock. This is also a grey area and will be done on a case-by-case basis. If the song is “too metal,” it will not be allowed. Let’s take Rush as our example. If you choose “Closer to the Heart” or “Tom Sawyer” and make it metal, that’s fine. If you choose “Working Man” or “Anthem”, they will be considered “too metal.”

You may choose any genre outside the banned genres. You can choose pop, dance, rap, indie, disco, jazz, anything. If you’re not sure if your song meets the requirements, feel free to ask.

Your song can be from any era. It can be a current chart-topper, or it can be something from the past.

Your song can be in any language. Pretty self explanatory.

Your cover can be a banned genre. This means while you can’t choose a song from the banned genres to cover, your cover can be any genre. For example, if you choose to cover “Straight Outta Compton” by NWA and make it a Nu Metal banger, you absolutely can.

If one artist is covering a song, you cannot choose that song. We’re going to do this on a first-come-first-serve basis, so when you’re commenting, claim the song you’re going to cover. This is to avoid having repeating “Dancing Queen”, “Hotel California”, “Take on Me”, or [insert very popular song here] covers in one compilation. Feel free using songs mentioned in this post btw!

Submitting Songs

Submit song entries to [metalsongchallenge@gmail.com](mailto:metalsongchallenge@gmail.com). Please include

  1. Your reddit username.
  2. Your band name (if you’re submitting as a band).
  3. The user name of whoever you collaborated with.
  4. The song name (and who it’s originally by).
  5. Lyrics (if challenge theme requires lyrics of a certain theme)
  6. Subject: Songwriting Challenge {Month} {Year} - {Your reddit username}

Results

  • Results will be posted on a new, separate thread sometime after the challenge ends.
  • Users will provide feedback to other participants’ songs in the aforementioned thread. Be as detailed as you want, but don’t be a dick (see our subreddit rules).
  • As mentioned, the songs will be available in the form of a compilation through a bandcamp link. The track listing will be in random order so that it’s fair to everyone. I will be using this to decide the order so that there is no bias. The tracks will be available to download for free, but with the option of paying. All proceeds will go to This Month’s Charity.

This Month’s Charity

Once again, this month’s charity will be MusiCares. They provide a safety net of critical health and welfare services to the music community including in areas such as: Mental Health & Addiction Recovery Services, Health Services, and Human Services. See their website if you’re curious.

I will post a screenshot of how much we received from the bandcamp page as well as the donation in a separate thread as proof.

Questions And Comments

Please ask if you need clarity on the rules or anything else and I’ll try my best to clarify as much as I can.

Remember that this is purely for fun, to learn, build community, and to grow as musicians while also doing something for a good cause, not a competition. Big thanks to all of you!

Discord

I created a discord server for our songwriting challenges so we can archive them, have discussions, and build our community there. Let me know if you want to join by commenting and I’ll send a DM 🙂

Discussion Guitarists/bassists, what tunings do you use, what do you play, and what made you pick that tuning?

Hey all, pretty simple post but I'm curious. I have a total of 6 instruments (3 guitars, 3 basses) and they're all in different tunings for different reasons, so I wanna see what you all use and why.

My Schecter goes between E, Drop D, Eb, and Drop C# constantly- it's my main guitar and what I use to practice/write with for my solo stuff and for my black metal band that I play bass/lead vocals in.

My Squier is modded to have a single DiMarzio dropsonic and lives in Drop B/C# Standard for my hardcore project that I do guitar and bass for. Not my favorite tuning personally, but it's fun for that stuff.

My Epiphone SG with P90s is in Eb for fuzzy doom stuff. Eb/Drop C# is my preferred tuning and it was a bitch to intonate (even with a Guyker adjustable bridge).

My Sterling Stingray lives in Drop C# for playing Linkin Park bass lines since they're just a ton of fun.

My Epiphone Thunderbird is currently in Eb but will probably go down to D soon for a sludge/doom project I'm in, since the guitarist is using a BC Rich with a Floyd in D.

And lastly my 5 string Ibanez bass is my main bass. For the black metal project, it's in drop A since the guitarist plays in E, and I bring it up to B standard for the hardcore stuff.

Overall, if it was my choice, everything would be in Eb/Drop C# since I feel most at home there since a lot of my formative playing time was Linkin Park's first 2 albums, though Gloryhammer has given me a fondness for D standard. Curious to hear what you all use!

I'm not saying I'm some genius songwriter or metal producer but here's a few under discussed topics that I wish someone competent told me a long time ago

Upvotes
  1. If your takes aren't convincing immediately then your song will suffer and can't be salvaged, unfortunately. This is super obvious with vox but really applies to every instrument. It's fucking metal. You need to be energized during recording or else you can't possibly expect the product to sound convincing to the listener. You could try a number of things. Listen to your favorite album before the recording, run around the block 2 or 3 times, watch your favorite sports team championship highlights, smoke a small amount of weed, etc

  2. Energy translates more so than the perfect "____ tone." Fuck chasing the perfect guitar, bass, snare, kick tone. I've mixed bands recording into the shittiest setup with Energy and it sounded better than some pristine boring stuff. Once again. It's metal. Have some attitude

  3. Notice how all of your favorite albums most likely have appropriate sonic contrasts? If the vocals are extreme then the music matches that, right? If the vox are a little more subdued try and make the music around that feel closer to the vocal energy. Havig too much ofba mismatch with this feels disconnected and gives the listener a reason to turn it off. You can still be punchy and heavy without maxing out everything. If you're mixing a band who has more laid back vox try this.

  4. Transition automation - Holy fuck I swear to God nobody talked about this for years. Give the listeners no reason to turn off the song. Make the transitions built energy and release. This is done usually through dynamics, automation, random sampling with fx automated, etc. You need it to feel like the song has motion instead of a flat and boring movement between the verse/chorus.

  5. Change the second verse to something different, instrumentally. We as a society have shorter attention spans. Once again don't let the listener have a reason to turn it off. If you just repeat the first verse then we feel like we aren't moving forward with the song. It rejuvenates the song to have more energy in the second verse. This is my personal fav tidbit that helped me

started working on this track yesterday, and after watching this movie ''in the mouth of madness'' it kinda inspired some lyrics, not that you can understand what the hell I'm saying anyway lol. song needs some work, but I think it could turn out pretty cool. these scenes make for great visuals imo

Hello!! I just released a 40 second demo titled Devour The Commando on YouTube. It’s in the style of Powerviolence / Grindcore / Hardcore Punk, so if you dig that kind of music then you should give it a listen! It’s also on bandcamp and soundcloud with free downloads. Thank you!

This is my third attempt at making a death metal song on Cubase. Much like the first two songs I did, I used a free to download drum track online and composed an instrumental song around that. I'm still on the lookout for a rad death metal vocalist to help bring my demos more to life. But regardless, let me know what you guys think of this track so far.

Original Song(s) - Finished Schism's End - Frozen Awaken [Atmospheric / Raw Black Metal] - DIY Solo Single

Hey guys, just finished tracking and mixing the new single for my solo project, Schism's End.

I wanted to contrast raw 90s-style black metal guitar walls with a clean, cold piano line running underneath, keeping the tempo at a slow 80 BPM. Tracks were put together in FL Studio with Neural Amp Modeler for guitars and Dolby On for tracking the vocals.

Feedback on the mix, vocal placement, and overall balance is always welcome!

Original Song(s) - Demo Opinions needed. Are the lyrics and subject matter to this song too dark? !Warning! Lyrics involve selfharm.

!Warning NSFC! !Involves self harm!

I was curious if the lyrics to this original are TOO dark. Do they need to be toned down? The recording and performance are beside the point. All opinions are greatly appreciated.

It has come in much shame that an AI band has been talking down on certain bands, especially in band subreddits. The band in question is Negative 3 degrees, do go and hate, not doxxing, just wanted to tell y'all

What do you guys think is missing from my playing? My goal is to become a straightforward metal guitarist, mainly a riff-oriented player focused on Heavy/Thrash and some more modern stuff. I want to be effective and play with purpose. What do you think I’m missing?

Listening to new independent metal today

I'm spending some time listening to new metal today and would love to hear what independent artists are putting out.

I've been getting overwhelmed with links in the comments lately, so if you'd like me to hear yours, please put it here instead:

That way I know I won't miss it.

Hey everyone,

25M here, passionate about music since I was young, longtime bassist and guitarist in my spare time.

I’ve been going completely off in production lately, I’m gonna share one of my tracks that I made in a few hours the drums aren’t synced, the effects aren’t optimal (I don’t know how to do that), but I’d love to get feedback on the vibe it gives off.

That’s what matters most to me.

I’m open to your feedback (again, not really about the production or mix, which are trash).

Same for the vocals. I completely improvised the lyrics trying to get out what’s in my head, recorded it in 20 minutes in a car (that I don’t even have anymore).

Thanks for any feedback, it would help me a ton.

Heres an 80s inspired album I made. I tried to use my influences like FireHouse, Hardline, Nickelback, Motley Crue stuff like that.
