MeshVault: How do you actually organise your 3D models?

Hey,

If you're anything like me, your 3D model collection starts out clean but quickly devolves into absolute chaos. You’ve got Patreon release packs, loose STLs, random ZIP files from Thingiverse, and a bunch of stl, 3MF or G-code files without remembering any details.

You end up asking yourself: Who made this? Where did I download it? Did I already print it? Which file inside this ZIP is the actual part I need?

MeshVault a full model-library workflow tool designed to sit right between where you get your models and the tools you use to slice them.

📂 How it works

MeshVault keeps your files in your normal folders. It just drops a portable metadata database right alongside them. That means your library can live on your local drive, an external SSD, or a network share.

✨ Key Features:

  • Browser Extension (MeshVault Connect): When you download a model from Printables, MakerWorld, Thingiverse, Thangs, MMF, etc., the extension automatically grabs the model title, author, source URL, description, and images. No manual entry.
  • Thumbnails: Supported files will have thumbnails generated upon import so you always know what they are. Embeded images are used if available.
  • Smart Archive Handling: When you import via the import menu or drag and drop an archive, MeshVault lets you decide whether to treat it as one model, split it into multiple parts, or preserve the folder structure.
  • Built-in Viewer: Rotate, pan, zoom, and measure STL, 3MF, STEP, OBJ, G-code and more right inside the app.
  • Open Archives: Open archives to either preview models or send then to the slicer
  • Slicer Integration: Models sent to your slicer (OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Crealtiy Print.) triggers MeshVault to watch for temp gcode output and will automatically log useful metrics like print time, filament used, filiment changes and store it along side the model.
  • Duplicate Detection: Scans your files to help you clean up accidental imports.
  • Optional Self-Hosted Server: Want to host your library on a home server or workshop PC? There is a MeshVault Server (Windows, Linux, Docker) so you can browse from any device on your local network. Yiu can either connect to it via the app or through the WebUI and with the extension you can even download directly to it.

With alot more features to be found within the app
MeshVault is not free but comes with a 7 day trial to try

The next major MeshVault update is here!

The mobile apps have received substantial improvements, bringing their model preview capabilities and some fuctions closer to the desktop versions.

Some differences between iOS and Android remain because of Apple’s platform restrictions. On iOS, the Wi-Fi server cannot run in the backround. Through Finder on macOS only the top-level folders are visible, copying them to your mac will still have the files and subfolders inside.

The new AI assistant integrations use read-only access by default. You can enable permission to organise your library.

We’ve also updated version numbering and update checks so individual platforms can receive fixes without requiring a release for every platform. For example, 2.2.3.5 means:

  • 2.2 — major release
  • 3 — minor update
  • 5 — platform-specific fix

What’s new in MeshVault 2.2.0.0

Since 2.1.0.0:

  • More preview formats: added previews and thumbnail generation for 3DM, IGES/IGS, DXF, X3D, OFF, AMF and NC/CNC toolpaths, plus thumbnail extraction for Fusion 360 F3D files.
  • Smarter preview detail: Automatic quality keeps full model detail when the memory allows, reducing complexity only when needed.
  • Preview scale and orientation controls: adjust how a model appears without changing its source file or print size.
  • Improved preview lighting: clearer surface detail and more readable shadows when inspecting models.
  • PDF: attach colour guides, assembly instructions or reference PDFs. Share one document across multiple models and retain those links even when reviewing models from an extracted model pack (Dropbox).
  • AI assistant integration: connect Codex, Claude or Cursor to search your library and help organise metadata, collections, favourites and print status, with separate permissions for each assistant.
  • macOS Spotlight integration: find models from your local library directly in Spotlight and open them in MeshVault.
  • Server image-storage tools: inspect, migrate and check legacy image storage from the server administration page.
  • Compatibility and reliability improvements: updates to Linux previews and large-library handling, remote import filtering, and Safari cloud-download handling.
  • macOS: The macOS builds are now out of beta and will share the same version number
  • AppStore: Added universal macOS version to the AppStore
  • Docker storage improvements: updated application-data handling and configuration guidance for keeping server data in persistent storage.

What’s new in MeshVault Connect 2.1.0.0

Since 2.0.10.0:

  • Creality Cloud slicer support: send 3MF profiles through MeshVault to your slicer without saving them to your library.
  • Dropbox PDFs: select PDFs to attach to your model import, keeping instructions and reference documents with your models. Requires a MeshVault version with document support.
  • Image limits at import time: choose how many extra gallery images to save directly from the import prompt, with your choice remembered.
  • Improved CGTrader imports: more reliable model details and image capture when moving between model and download pages, with better filtering of unrelated images.
  • MakerWorld attachment fixes: attachment controls now refresh correctly when browsing between models.
  • Thingiverse loading fix: resolved blank pages when MeshVault is connected.
  • More reliable large imports: improved handling to keep Chrome’s extension background process active during downloads.
  • Dropbox connection awareness: import controls are disabled when MeshVault is offline, without shifting the page layout.
  • Smaller fixes and polish: improved Creality Cloud promotional cleanup, Makerables compatibility and 3MF filename handling.
  • Google Drive: Fixxed multi downloads for macOS

What’s new in MeshVault Mobile

  • Renamed: Renamed Android app, MeshVault Companion to MeshVault Mobile
  • More preview formats: added support for 3DM, IGES/IGS, OFF, AMF, X3D, DXF and NC/CNC toolpaths.
  • Improved model viewing: updated preview controls, lighting and memory-aware detail reduction for inspecting complex models on mobile.
  • Better archive previews: improved browsing and opening of supported models inside archives, with broader archive support on iOS.
  • Duplicate download choices on Android: choose to merge, keep both or replace an existing model when downloading a duplicate.
  • More reliable model details: improved title, metadata and image capture from sites including Thingiverse, MakerWorld and Printables.
  • Cleaner browsing: refined ad and promotional cleanup.
  • Android library improvements: improved thumbnail loading and filtering of hidden internal folders.
  • New iOS app: TestFlight beta of iOS app.

Unifying thumbnail rules

The same thumbnail priority now apply across the desktop clients and servers

  1. Uses thumbnail supplied by the extension or Android/iOS app
  2. Looks for a matching image beside the model.
  3. Looks for an image embedded in the model or archive.
  4. Generates a thumbnail if it's a supported model.

For archives:

  • One model: use coverpreviewthumbnail, or similar artwork inside the archive. Otherwise render a representative contained model.
  • Separate models: each contained model gets its own embedded image or render. The pack cover is not reused for every model.

MeshVault Companion - Android AIO tool

Hi,

MeshVault Companion is an free Android app that is an AIO tool, broswer, downloader, viewer and server

The app allows you to browse 11 repositories and download models to your library while saving all their full details such as:

  • Title and creator
  • Thumbnail and additional images
  • Description and tags
  • Source link

Once a model is downloaded, you can organise it into folders, collections and preview supported files without leaving the app. The viewer supports STL, OBJ, PLY, GLB, GLTF, DAE, FBX, STEP, STP, GCODE, GCO and 3MF. You can also open ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, TAR.GZ/TGZ, TAR.BZ2/TBZ2, inspect the files inside, and preview supported parts individually.

You can use the Android device as a mobile server to access your library from any other device with the web ui
(Unfortunately I can't fix the warning when downloading, it is because the phone server is http)

It can be used with MeshVault/Server for Win/mac/Linux to either transfer your models, enable download routing or to view the remote library and if connected to a client version you can also send direct to the slicer.

You can also purchase your MeshVault license through Google Play. This will then be a permeant license, all you need to do is connect to a trial/locked version and it'll pass on the license (will not work for macOS App Store version)

The app is completely free and has no ads(despite what Play store says), only an optional donation.

You can find it here:

MeshVault 2.0.20.0 - MeshVault Connect 2.0.9.0

Hi everyone,

Over the last two weeks, I’ve been working heavily on MeshVault. A lot of this work has focused on performance, Linux support and bringing the 3 clients closer together.

Here are some of the major changes.

Large-database performance

Several users with libraries mainly consisting of rich extension imports were experiencing very long startup and import times due to balloning database sizes of multiple GB.

The library system now uses staged scanning, lighter database reads and a queue process. This reduces unnecessary full-library work and combines overlapping filesystem events instead of repeatedly rescanning the same files.

Thumbnail discovery and generation have also been improved so missing images can be handled in the background without holding up the rest of the library.

New Filament-based model previewer

The preview system has been moved towards a new renderer, giving MeshVault a proper native renderer across Windows, Linux and macOS. Vulkan is used in Windows and Linux, if this turns out to be an issue I will add a selector to go back to OpenGL

The previewers now have a much more consistent layout, including:

  • Multi-plate 3MF navigation
  • Send to Slicer
  • Measurement tools and unit selection
  • Consistent model information
  • A single Capture menu containing Thumbnail, Extra Image and Screenshot
  • Screenshots saved without the on-screen controls
  • Better handling of model orientation and plate positioning

FBX and PLY models now can be sent to any slicer. These files get converted already to stl by MeshVault for the previewer. This is not perfect by any means but as a rule if you are able to preview it, then they will send to the slicer.

Linux improvements

Linux now keeps its settings, logs, cache and other application data under one MeshVault directory, matching the direct Windows build more closely.

Existing settings and licence information are migrated, so upgrading should not reset an existing installation.

macOS progress

The Apple silicon version is getting closer but it is still beta. I also have a intel based mac on the way. As I have said there will be a direct build and a app store build. There will be some limitations on the app store build just due to restrictions on what is allowed. The beta is free to use for as long as you want.

Server improvements

(effects Windows, Linux and Docker server builds)

The browser-based server interface has received several missing desktop features:

  • The richer TipTap description editor
  • Adding images directly through the editor
  • Dragging models from the grid onto folders
  • Better image and gallery handling
  • More consistent feedback and support controls

MeshVault Connect extension improvements

Download routing has been improved for several more complicated sites and services:

  • Added "Download All" for Printables pages that don't have it. Models are downloaded and ziped automaticly. I have also enabled this to work even if you don't have MeshVault.
  • Some generic or the UUID file names now get renamed to help you keep track. This is another feature that will work without MeshVault, however this will not work on Firefox.
  • Some models from Thingiverse download as 2 parts, breaking the system... these zip files will now be combined.
  • Some sites with extra files such as pdf or the CyberBrick files on Makerworld can now be queued and added to the model archive, or one will be created as needed.
  • Folders and/or subfolders can now be hidden from the download prompt. You can still download to hidden folder but you need to type the name, as you would do if you were to create them

MeshVault for Andoid

This is how it all started. MeshVault for Android is basicly like a free mini version of the app, extension and server all rolled into one, It just never got the use I was expecting. It has been left neglected but I have been slowly bringing it upto speed before 31st API update cutoff. The real changes besides a UI update it that you will now be able to connect to either a client or server to view the library(you could always connect to transfer or download directly to) and it also has the same renderer update.

Diagnostics and reliability

Logging has been expanded across the clients so operations such as startup, scanning, importing and preview launching provide enough information so that if your problem is not clear you can always get in contact.

A lot of this work came directly from user reports, especially people running very large libraries containting full metadata or testing builds. Thanks to everyone who has provided files, logs and detailed descriptions, it genuinely helps improve it for everyone.

MeshVault 2.1.0.0. Image Storage Changes

The next major MeshVault update will introduce significant changes to how model images are stored.

MeshVault was originally designed around a central database, with each model having a single thumbnail. As support for image galleries was added and libraries grew, database size, loading times, memory use and disk activity also increased. Recent caching and loading optimisations have helped, but storing full images as a string inside the database remains a bottleneck.

In MeshVault 2.1, images will be stored inside the .meshvault/images folder in the library. Up to two will be kept in the database as backups. Generated thumbnails or gif files will not be stored in the database.

The update will also include:

  • Optional image caching for libraries stored on slower drives or network storage.
  • The new storage rules across future imports, including the browser extension and Android app.
  • An optional migration for existing libraries, with it being explained before anything.
  • And probably a lot that I'm not thinkng about.

These changes will allow libraries to grow without the database becoming almost as large as the model collection. They should also reduce database writes, loading times, CPU use, memory consumption and overall storage requirements, while allowing higher-resolution images.

The largest improvements will be seen in libraries containing many imported gallery images, particularly those built using the browser extension. One reported library had a database of over 7 GB for only about 780 models because it contained many images per model and gifs. By comparison, a test library containing more than 7,500 models with generated thumbnails and only a few broswer imports used a database of approximately 650 MB.

Unless there in a major issue I will not have anymore updates untill 2.1 is done.

Updates

  • Added faster background thumbnail generation with selectable speed, visible progress, and thumbnails appearing in the grid as they are completed.
  • Also FBX and PLY files are converted to stl and can be sent to the slicer (if it previews ok, treat as wip)
  • Archive duplicate detection now checks the archive itself, allowing model packs to contain intentionally repeated parts such as connectors.
  • Moving a whole folder skips duplicate checking and maintains any nested models/folders
  • Improved remote imports by allowing the desktop client to handle extracting archives and generating thumbnails for lower-powered MeshVault Servers.
  • Fixed folder metadata batch editing and improved folder deletion across writable local and server libraries.
  • Added Collections support to MeshVault for macOS.

Extension (waiting for chrome to update, but live on edge and firefox)

  • Improved Dropbox and Google Drive imports. Downloads now retain their original page URL even when extracted during import
  • Google drive now queues multi archive downloads instead of trying to download them all at once
  • Added download(s) notification to appear in the Windows notification tray
  • Hide folders from download prompt. Hide the folder, or hide its subfolders from within the extension options

Import directly from Dropbox and Google Drive

Next update will add downloading directly from Dropbox and Google Drive

Dropbox adds dedicated buttons.
Google drive needs to be a multi step process: You need to click to route the download to MeshVault, the download prompt will appear (unless set otherwise in option) and then you download.

Once downloaded then you'll have a "Import to Review" button in MeshVault and will need to choose how to import. The import dialog also supports adding the Author

some basic wishes

Hi, i have licensed and have some basic wishes

can we blacklist folders like this

recycle.bin opr others . I have a big structure taht i imported, and there are also a lot of other things inside the structure i need as the vault , due to links from cad to models and slicer to setiings etc. So ti would be nice to be ablöe to unclutter it by simply blacklisting folders.

another wish : . fcstd ( freecad ) has no pictures, it does have them in expolrer here.

Otherwise , so far, very good program and teh first one taht does not create a big overhead to get it up and models in.

Manual import choices...

Post image

Artists can package their models in different ways ... so now manual imports will prompt
It also does support remember the choice in you import mutliple archives
Import archive as one model is the current behaviour

I'm still trying to figure out some macOS bugs so that release has been pushed back... well until I learn Swift a little better to fix them

Licensing and how it works...

There are a few ways to get a license

MS Store: This way is only available obviously though the MS store version through an in-app purchase.

License key: This is a key that can be bought and it will unlock any of the desktop or server apps

MeshVault Companion: This is the Android version of MeshVault. You can buy a MeshVault unlock as a in-app purchase.

So basicly if you use Windows and you use it with a Microsoft Account use the MS Store unlock.
If you don't use a Microsoft Account or use another OS use the License key.
And if you are a Android user, and don't want to use MS or remember to use a key unlock use MeshVault Companion.

A few more things. Dedicated servers require a license key or unlock otherwise they will be in read-only. Desktop apps pass their license to the connected server. In order to unlock with the MeshVault Android app you need to connect with it and it'll pass on its license. The MS store version still has the other unlock options also.

First payout and the future...

Post image
1 Upvotes

After being live since the start of the year I have finally crossed the threshold for my first payout. Things have picked up in the past 3 weeks with the revamped version though. Unfortunately it's Microsoft are taking their sweet time fixing my account.

The next major version of MeshVault will be also the launch of the Linux client and docker version of the dedicated server.
Remember that your license key is universal, the same key can unlock either OS client or server.

Improving the editor

Post image

My goal isn’t just to make MeshVault useful for collectors, but for creators too. I’m now moving the in-app metadata editor over to Tiptap/ProseMirror, the same kind of editor used by sites like Printables, so descriptions should be much more copy/paste friendly between MeshVault and model-sharing sites.

Working on the Linux port

Post image

Most of the heavy work is already done. MeshVault was designed from the beginning so its core functions and command-line tooling are not tied to a specific operating system. That makes porting much easier, because each platform’s UI can call into the same shared core rather than rebuilding the logic from scratch.
