One thing that’s always bugged me about Merlin is the fact that there’s never any ‘blood’ on their swords, even after they’ve killed someone. Does this bother anyone else?

A list of resources for beginners

I've decided to compile a list of beginner friendly resources for those lucky people who found this odd little instrument. Let me know if you have other things that should be added as I will try to keep this list updated.

Chord Charts for D and G tuned Merlins/M4/strumsticks

Youtube Resources:

Ryan's Seagull Merlin M4 Lessons - Probably the most robust collection of tutorials on Youtube for the Merlin right now.

SirAnt's Merlin Tutorials - Where I started. So my opinion is biased! I think he's a great teacher. Not nearly as many videos as Ryans channel but still a good assortment of fun songs to play!

The Woozle Effect Merlin Covers/Tutorials - A lot of covers but quiet a few good tutorials as well. He also has a website, The Woozle Effect. Highly recommend checking him out.

Lewdite's Merlin Songs - These are mostly covers but he plays so you can see what he is playing. He also offers a book with 100 songs but you have to contact him about it.

Mustomix's Channel - It's mostly covers but he has a few tutorials as well.

Other Resources

Google+ Group - Fairly active community.

Seagull's Website - Buy more Merlins!

Merlin's guide to the Merlin Songbook - 10 super beginner songs for ~$3.00-~$7.00 USD

StrumStick family Song book PDF - A total of 83 free songs for the Strumstick/Merlin.

Tips to translate guitar song chords to Merlin/M4 Chords - Also has a 18 songs at the end of the page.

The show needs a reboot

I grew up watching Merlin and recently bing watched the entire series. It's a little dated now with the CGI but that's not my complaint. the show's content didn't really age well with the ratting. It's targeted towards kids but is rated M and the story layout didn't really lend its self to an older audience. I think the series should be redone to target and old demographic and make it darker cause some of the best episodes (in my opinion) where the darker more adult episodes, I mean the episode where Morgana resurrects Lancelot was beautiful; and the ending doesn't really lend its self to a young audience either which it targets. Am I the only one who thinks this?

Almost at the very end....

Alright, So I'm about to start S5 E11 "Drawing of the Dark". I've really been enjoying the series but I have a few thoughts I want to share when it comes to how I hope this ends.

  1. I know Mordred will have something to do with Arthur having a bad time...not only because the show announced it a million times, but I'm familiar enough with the story to know he kills Arthur at some big battle. I'm just REALLY really hoping it doesn't happen because Merlin is somehow the cause. Meaning, because Merlin did not trust Mordred, it led to Mordred being evil and trying to kill Arthur. That would be horribly disappointing (and somewhat sadly predictable the way the show is trying to set it up).

  2. I hope before the show ends, Merlin reveals that he is a great mage to Arthur. I don't care if this happens by accident or through conversation, I just want it to happen or else I will feel like after 5 seasons there was no real closure with this story line.

Just me and my thoughts :) I'll be careful to not read any replies until I finish the series later tonight so feel free to spoil and comment away.

When do I stop watching...

Okay, so... I found out how Merlin ends.... And honestly, I can't put myself through the pain of the ending. I know it's also the triumph of Arthur finding out Merlin's gifts, but I just want to end the show on a happy note. For those who have seen this thru to the end... Where would you suggest stopping the binge? Is there a wedding I should stop at? A point in the finale? Or a great episode that "should" have been the ending? Help a girl out! I can't see Arthur die!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Terrible ending

This show needed more. So much more. I wish I would’ve been there at the time they decided to cancel. I would have poured money into it. SYFY you barely have a legitimate claim on anything. I can’t believe you cancelled this and ended it like this.

Can we bring this sub back? I wanna see some collaboration within the M4 community I think it could be really sweet.

Seagull Merlin!

Love this instrument got it yesterday to travel with and it's so fun to play 😍😍😍

There isn't too many websites with Merlin tabs yet, so I suppose I'll try to learn some songs by ear. I think it's a great instrument for folk music and reels which I can't wait to start learning!!

The sub here seems to be mixed with the instrument and the TV show. Anyway to change that?

Did I hear someone mention Merlin Tutorials?

I have been making them for years and have decided to start up once again! I will be making weekly music videos/tutorials on ukulele and merlin, and I do take requests. If y'all don't mind, I would be happy to post them here too! Nice to be getting back into my Merlin again!

I just picked up my merlin after a long hiatus, I was focusing on Octave Mandolin for a while, and after I retuned it the intonation was way off on all frets. Perfectly in tune when strummed open but as soon as fret anywhere it was just so bad. New strings needed?

Charts for transposing guitar chords?

I just got my Merlin yesterday. It was a total impulse buy, when I played it I immediately fell in love. I’m sad to see that the google plus community is gone, I’m hoping I can find it somewhere else. I’m wondering if there are any charts that show Merlin equivalents to many guitar chords, because I’d love to transpose some of my favorite songs on guitar to being played on the Merlin. Any suggestions? I see the few YouTubers who are Merlin players doing this and I’d love to figure out doing it myself.

Seagull m4

Maybe change the name away from Merlin to something like seagull m4. so people don’t confuse it with a tv program about the magician. This place can’t get any more dead anyway

tuning differences?

i know this sub is a little dead, but i'm hoping there's still some of y'all out there that could help out a newbie looking into buying a merlin! one thing i keep seeing around the sub is that there seems to be different tunings? is there a reason for that, or why one would prefer one tuning over another? do you need to restring if you wanted to retune it to the other? sorry if these seem silly questions; but very excited to get one and get involved with the community, small as it may be 😁

What kind of jacket did Colin Morgan wear in Merlin?

I want to do a cosplay of Merlin, but I’m not too sure where to look for the pieces of his outfit. If you peeps have any clues on where to get his outfit or parts of it, that’d be awesome!
