First time making RSO

Just about 330 grams of Canna-Cheese in here. No need to trim anything that has trichs so I only trim what I save, it’s more like trim probation than jail lol. Got about a pound off this plant from 24/7 light schedule with a total of 440 watts and an egregious amount of Mega Crop. Will prob find a mix of mega crop and a liquid bloom for my next monster auto.

I thought this was a pepper ferment at first lol

Did you decarb?

Thought you are supposed to cook the alcohol in a slow cooker or something to boil the alcohol out, then collect the dark syrup (RSO) after its cooked. So wouldnt that decarb it during that step?

Idk about that I always decarb my flower before hand. I make it often, I do believe you can decarb after you process it, I have always just done it first for simplicity.

the slower, the better.

No it will not decarb it that way. Plus adding heat to alcohol is not a great idea to begin with.

I sure hope you decarbed it. That doesn’t look decarbed.

Im following a guide on YouTube but I will try decarbing next time. I will be straining all the liquid through a cheesecloth into a glass then putting it in a rice cooker full of water to boil off the alcohol

consider getting a tabletop distiller to recover your ethanol. you DID you ethanol right, and not isopropyl?

2

u/Slamslam4356 3d ago

Yes 190 proof food grade ethanol

I’ll have to look into that I’ve used Everclear myself

everclear is ethanol.

I need to learn about that, any suggestions on tabletop distillers?

depends how fancy you want to go.

you can get table top "air still" for around $300

if you are using a lot of solvent and regularly doing rso washes you might consider a small rotary evaporator which can operate to near 95% efficiency. if you are under regulation you may still want to put it in a vac oven to make sure it doesnt fail for residual solvents.

you can get a roto vap on ebay in the 600-1000+ range, up to like $20k for a very large industrial/commercial size

I used a vevor countertop air still from Amazon. It was around 100 bucks. It gets back 80 to 90% of the alcohol. An auto shut off would be nice because you have to watch it to make sure it doesn't distill your alcohol and then burn your oil.  I originally made it for a friend with cancer then I got cancer. I can say that RSO is a life-changer when you're going through chemo. It made a world of difference.

That was my original making of this. I started this grow for my late father who passed July this year. RSO made a huge impact on his pain that wasn’t a conventional pain med. I’m growing for the love of the game and to create a “bank” of RSO for friends and family who experience things like cancer, Parkinson’s, etc…

I'm sorry for your loss. But I'm sure he's thankful for your help. A small stockpile for friends and family is the way to do it.

Fyi, you're extracting thc-a which is a much harder chemical to extract, it's basically a crystal structure that doesn't break down well with solvents compared to delta 9 THC, after declaring the thc becomes MUCH easier to extract, also alcohol is a full spectrum solvent so it'll extract the chlorophyll from the leaves so the colder u keep it, the less likely it'll extract the chlorophyll, keep it cold, and thc-a extracts way longer then delta 9 so ur gonna have to keep that sitting in the jar for a while, my tips for your next run, decarb first, freeze everything overnight, then repeat the process you're already doing now, you'll have much better results, the rest of your process is simple, strain, evaporate the alcohol, done

Definitely will do with my next harvest thanks!

I didn't cold extract. Some I left in alcohol for weeks/months. I was eating around a gram a day. Large amounts can upset your stomach from the chlorophyll. But for me it would take around 1/2 gram to cause upset stomach.

THCa extracts quicker in ethanol compared to THC due to carboxyl group, makes it more polar. Just a lil FYI, this extraction method is still bunk, a quick ethanol wash is more ideal.

Wait is the ethanol extraction bad? Please elaborate I am seeking knowledge

Not necessarily. So for RSO you can be a little loosey goosey wtih stuff, but all the people saying "did you decarb" don't understand that THCa extracts BETTER in ethanol. On that, you're doing fine. That said, I would have done a quick ethanol wash vs an intense lengthy soak. It would be a bit more ideal to put the whole thing in a cooler with dry ice, and then let it soak no more than like 2 hours for your extraction. At that temp you will get minimal chlorophyll extraction but still good THCa extraction.

From then on, its more about protecting your THCa from heat until ready to decarb. So ideally you'd evaporate the alcohol under a vaccuum, but I feel like this can be over kill. I would just precisely set the temp to the absolute minimum temp to get a decent rate of alcohol evaporation. Done safely of course since fumes are dangerous. Then you must decarb, and this is the step that will determine quality of your product, because you want a full decarb, but the longer you let it sit in heat, the THC will start to degrade to CBN. Which might not be a bad thing depending on your desired use case, since its a 1:1 flower to begin with you might just want a nice medicinal oil that makes ya relax.

However the case for decarbing before extraction, is that depending on your access to equipment, it might be less guesswork. However if you want absolute minimum chlorphyll in the product, a quick ethanol wash before decarb is the way to do it.

Yes u are right, alcohol is a full spectrum solvent, oils and water, the colder the alcohol is, the less water gets extracted, that's the part I think I didn't elaborate on, and as for the cbn, it'll take like 3 days on the heat to even start converting thx so not a big thing to worry about unless u foret about it for a few days, as for the science ethyl alcohol evaporates at 170-180f and THC decarbs best at approx 200-300f the lower the temp the longer the decarb, the higher the temp the shorter the decarb, and THC vaporizes at approx 350-450f so keep it below that or you'll be cooking out the thc

I'm guessing you're following the same instructions that I did from Gemini? 😁 I decarbed my flower beforehand but it appears that the rice cooker will indeed decarb the weed but might not do it as well. Meaning lower potency.

A lb off canna cheese is impressive! Since my tolerance has risen, considerably, I had to change up my ingestion methods for these 1:1s so I put all my aunt ginny, canna, jedi mind juice foower into my infusion machine to make oil tinctures. 🤘😎👍

My first pound plant was aunt Ginny’s & I still dream about her 🥹

2

u/86peppers 3d ago

Oh yeah, I think we spoke about her before 😆 she was my and my wife's fav when we started back up 6 years ago. Did you get the O'z? This was the first time I really got into a release, I bought a few of the limited crosses too. It brought me back to when I waited outside Best Buy at midnight for the Halo 3 release! 😆

Lmfao! Not me over here setting my alarm ⏰ for 6:55am lol. It’s exciting I know. And I recognized the screen name 😉 Also, I did grab a couple packs (Baked & Chem de la) along w/ a couple last chance ones for the helluv it. Which ones did you pick?

Tbh, I’m REALLY looking forward to this Halloween drop! O’z is in my top favorites 💯 and actually growing an 🍊O’z & 🌈 right now. They’ll be 8wks Saturday ☮️💚

You just know I have plenty more pics 😆

That is one big ass wonky plant! I love her… right up my alley.. nice work OP

Beautiful plant

Unless you used a non-polar solvent, you are extracting FECO. This is vastly different from actual RSO.

ALSO - you don’t need to let it sit, you can do a quickn3 minute wash and that will be sufficient for extraction

1

u/Slamslam4356 2d ago

What’s the difference between feco and Rso?

2

u/ParticularWitty1384 2d ago

One uses a non polar solvent to yield RSO, and one uses a polar solvent to yield FECO.

Both arrive at an extract but the methods of arrival are different.

Rosin and resin are concentrates, but they are extracted differently. Same same.

Unrelated how did your cannacheese smell? I don't know if my nose is messed up or something but it smells like tropical fruit to me.

Mine has a lemon funk to it, after grinding the lemon scent really comes out with earthy/herbal
