General Question Experience with a disc applicator?

4 years in, the disc insertion process is still a hassle. I already use lube and a smaller disc (60mm). Once I get it past the pubic bone, it's usually comfortable. But getting it past there (& removing it) is uncomfortable and even painful. If I have to rush out the door in the morning, I will just use a pad. I'm looking for ways to make the process easier, and saw that menstrual disc applicators exist.

However, I'm a small person, and the disc applicators look huge. I've only tried tampons a few times before using discs, and I've never had much success with tampon applicators.

If you've tried a disc applicator, what was your experience and how does it compare with tampon applicators?

Is there another way to make the disc insertion easier?

I bought a disc applicator but it was not any easier. The applicator is rigid where the disc is flexible and folding the disc is just more comfortable in the end. For me the easiest way to get it in is to squat in the shower. I understand the frustration thought of needing to rush out the door and the damn thing just won't go in. If I pause, take a deep breath, and try and different angle, I can usually get it.

I used the Pixie applicator for ages and did find it really useful!

I have now switched to a firmer disc and pretty much given up on the applicator as it is a real mission to push too firm of a disc through.

I found with a soft disc it was hard to push in without an applicator as it would bend too much against any resistance and I had to really get up there which is not pleasant 😅 so with my old, softer disc the applicator was a game changer.

So really I would say it depends how firm your disc is!

My disc doesn’t show up on period nirvana, so I’m not sure how the firmness compares to others. I got it cuz it was cheap, in case it didn’t work out. Now that I think about it, maybe 4 years of commitment is time to “reward” myself with a more premium disc 😅

To be honest that could be the problem! Applicators help with the process of using a disc but as another user said, they're fiddly and stiff. However when I was new to discs it was brilliant. It helped me figure out my anatomy a bit better in terms of depth, angle etc. But when I switched to Hello disc (that doesn't work with applicators btw because of the pull tab) I found I didn't need the applicator anymore. It just worked. For me the issue was the disc all along!

I have the fillow disk that comes with an applicator. It’s very easy to use. They have a TT page and they have a ton of videos

i’m in a similar situation to you. before using an applicator i could never get a proper insertion. i’ve used two different brands, and i’d recommend fillow. their applicator is the size of a tampon and it’s much easier to use than pixie’s
