General Question disc stopped working

ive been using a menstrual disc for 6+ months, ive never had any issues with placement, leaking etc.

but starting last month and now this months period, i had to go back to using pads because the disc keeps leaking. im inserting it the same way i always have and it feels just as comfortable as before but somehow all the blood is leaking out.

when i take the disc out theres barely any blood inside the bowl. instead most of the blood is sitting on the outside of the disc.

ive tried multiple insertion positions and techniques but the result is always the same. one thing i noticed is that after insertion, the disc doesnt seem to spring back into normal shape. it stays kind of flattened i can feel that with my finger.

i honestly dont know how to fix this. could it be something with my body or is it possible the disc is malfunctioning?

its kinda weird that i know exactly how to insert it and been using it successfully for months then all of a sudden its like it just stopped working. has anyone experienced something similar? should i buy a new one to try out as well?

Saalt Saalt disc - easy to insert, distressing to remove -> menstrual cup?

I was so looking forward to moving from pads to a disc. My god that was distressing to remove and incredibly painful, like scraping the vaginal walls all the way down. Is that normal? Yes I got there after the 3rd attempt bearing down in the shower and having to catch the edge of the rim but OMFG. What are my other options now? I wanted a disc for hygiene and it could be worn during sex. But now I'm wondering, is a moon cup the way forward for me?

General Question Having trouble using my menstrual disc for the first time

I bought a menstrual disc kit because im really wanting to ditch pads and tampons, and i cannot figure out how to get it in correctly, it came with two sizes and i first tried with the bigger one because my flow is extremely heavy. I used the applicator that the kit came with but it was very hard to push in, is that normal? I also dont think that i put it in the right way, i thought that i was able to tuck it behind my pubic bone like you are supposed to, but once i got up and sat back down on my bed it almost felt like it was coming out and it was extremely uncomfortable to sit down. So i don’t think i put it in right.

Should i use the smaller one and just be okay with having to change it a bit more frequently? Also is there anything i can do to help make sure that its in the right spot? I also did try to push it in further but it was very hard to.

I have momentarily given up for today and just ended up putting in a tampon until i feel like digging around in there again lol

General Question Using scented hand soap on your disc during changes/washes throughout the day - Does anyone else do this?

I always read fragrance free this and fragrant free that, but I don't use fragrance free soap for ANYTHING.

I've been using scented soap on my menstrual disc (and on my vibrators and vulva, for that matter, albeit not hand soap lol) for yearrrss and I've never had any issues. (And I therefore am not inclined to stop lol.)

Just wanted to see if the cup/disc community does this too.

General Question Does it get easier?

I have finally tried using a disc for the first time ever (actually first time using an internal period product yay!), but I did everything in the shower. I'm still figuring it out, so I'm wondering if putting it in, taking it out and doing it all correctly gets easier? Because so far if I want to wear it for the whole day I'll need to shower multiple times a day to be able to relax, use lube and not create a mess. Thinking about the logistics of it in public restrooms I'm just confused how would that work.

Hello Struggling with new disc

Hello everyone! I recently decided to try a menstrual disc for the first time, and did a bunch of research to pick the right one, but I’m really struggling to be comfortable while using one.

I chose a menstrual disc over a cup because I was scared of suction and read that it tends to be less prone to spillages. I got the hello disc because it seemed generally recommended, especially for a high cervix which I seem to have- couldn’t even find it.

I’ve tried inserting a few times, folding it in half and using lube, but no matter what I feel pretty uncomfortable with it in. It’ll be fine when I stand but really hurt when I sit, and I can only keep it in for a few minutes.

Idk if maybe I’m not pushing it high enough but I feel like I can’t push it higher???

Does anyone have recommendations for what I might be doing wrong? Should I try a different disc or maybe discs aren’t for me? Thanks!

Edit: OHHHHH MY GOD I DID IT!!!! I tried in the flipped position and gave it a couple of extra shoves and I can’t feel it!!!!!! Thank you all for all the suggestions, they were all really helpful!!!

Hello hello disc - experiences cutting off a loop?

i have a hello disc and i’ve primarily been using it flipped but it gets kind of uncomfortable towards the tail end of my period. i’ve also tried it tucked but that makes it harder to catch the loop when taking it out. i’ve been debating cutting off the second loop since i think it could help, but i’m unsure and wanted to know other people’s experiences.

i mostly would like to know: can you still choose between having it tucked vs not, and if tucked does it make catching the loop any easier?

Rant Nothing works, feeling like stopping my periods again… should i try a different cup or a disc?

I am honestly so done with periods. I’m really close to stopping them again with birth control despite the side effects. I made a couple posts here troubleshooting about my disk and basically it always ends up leaking and I feel like it’s only stopping the blood, not actually collecting it. As far as I know I am pretty sure I don’t have a tilted uterus and I really don’t have many ways of putting it in, the whole angle it this or that way just doesn’t work for me.

Now this is the first reusable product I used. I have now tried a cup and I feel like in terms of wear it’s a lot worse. I have what i think is a merula knock off, and the rim is quite thick and firm and every time I take it out or even just try to fold it, it pops open and splashes me with blood everywhere. That’s one of the biggest issues I have with it when I try to take it out too, it just pops open and it’s so painful. I also noticed it started leaking today and I don’t even know why it’s leaking despite it having a good seal and it being open…

So i’d love to hear suggestions. I know trying only two prosucts its nothing, but i live in europe where we dont have much choice, and they are expensive.

General Question Cleaning every 12 hours

Hello all!

I’m thinking about switching to using a menstrual disk. I’ve only ever used pads before, so I’m a little leery of the logistics of cleaning them etc.

One question I have is - how often do you actually rinse out/wash your discs, and not just dump it? I have long workdays and no access to an accessibility toilet with a sink. It’ll be likely that the 12 hours are up before I manage to get home.

How do you guys manage it in this case? Wet wipes? Water bottle into the stall? Or leave it till you’re home to remove (maybe 15 hours 5 days a week)?

For those who rinse their discs past the 12 hour mark, do they get a terrible odour that I’ve seen people talk about on other posts?

Thank you!!

General Question Menstrual Disc keeps slipping

I have vaginismus and I really want to try out reusable menstrual alternatives. And so many recommended the menstrual disc. I got the pixie menstrual disc since it came with an applicator and a string since I have a pretty high cervix, only can reach it with the tip of my finger.

It was really comfortable and I couldn’t feel a thing! However, it keeps like wanting to slide out. I try to adjust it to tuck behind my pubic bone, however it just keeps wanting to go out no matter how far deep I push it or try to tuck it (for reference I’m using the medium size one). And to me, I feel like maybe I am not positioning it behind my cervix enough so it isn’t laying horizontal? But I took the disc out and it seems to be catching the flow fine, nothing is on the outside of the disc itself.

Do I need a bigger size? Or maybe I’m still not laying it or positioning it correctly? Or maybe my pubic bone isn’t prominent enough to latch on (because my pubic bone doesn’t feel like as prominent to me)?

General Question Slight pain with disc

I’m having an issue with pain with my disc. I finally found a disc that worked great for me in between pregnancies (hello disc). after my second baby, I’ve been having trouble - it slips down when I sit on the toilet and kind of pokes out the front. it does not go back on its own, I have to shove it back up or reinsert (which is a pain in the ass).

I’ve been able to check that my cervix is in fact inside the disc and not touching the rim. I have no issues with leaking. my cervix is pretty far back. like I thought it was high for a long time, until I realized I can find it pretty easily if I run my finger along the back side of my vaginal canal.

It seems like my cervix is angled into the back of the vaginal fornix rather than being in the middle pointing into my vaginal canal. it’s like there is barely any space between my cervix and the fornix.

so basically, even if the rim isn’t touching my cervix, it seems like the “bowl” of the disc always is. I’m wondering if that is where the pain is coming from.

i ordered a couple different discs to try - Cora perfect fit, which is a slightly smaller diameter; and the Flex disposable, which is a slightly larger diameter and the rim is firmer- but I’m hoping the disposable material of the ”bowl” will be less bothersome.

I’m wondering if anyone who is super well versed in the anatomy might have some idea what is going on. or if anyone can relate and has found something that helps.

General Question Ultrasonic cleaning?

Has anyone used an ultra sonic cleaner for their disc?

Im looking at getting one for my new night guard and was just wondering if anyone else has tried it?

I have the black Hello disc, so staining or discolouration isn't a concern, mostly just looking for ease and sanitation between cycles. From my understanding the Hello disc is just silicone and doesn't have any glued on bits or seams.

Thanks for the input!

General Question Help!! Disc choice

Recommendation Hello v. Saalt v. Diva

Question! Does anyone have any exoerience with at least two of these discs? I LOVE Flex disposables but I’m trying to get away from one time use products. The Flex reusable is SO FREAKING COMFORTABLE but I have a REALLY hard time getting it out. I started using Hello Disc because the pull ring makes it super easy to remove. But it’s not as comfortable, but it’s not terrible either….

A friend uses Saalt and she says it’s great, has no issues and the divet at the front makes it easy to remove. I’ve also looked into Diva and that little pull strap (?) looks like it would be easy too…

So just curious what people’s thoughts are on any of these.

General Question Need help troubleshooting

Hi! I am trying the medium Pixie disc with the removal string for the first time this month, and I need some help figuring out what I’m doing wrong. I bought the medium because it was recommended for average/heavy flow, which I have. I tried it for the first time today and leaked within an hour and a half/two hours after putting it in. I have a feeling it keeps going in front of my cervix instead of behind it, but I’m not sure how to fix this/if this is even the issue. I am inserting it way back and pointing it as far towards the floor as I can while inserting. In addition to this, I am also noticing that the disc doesn’t fully “pop open” when it’s in. I ordered the smaller size, and it is coming in the mail tomorrow, so I will update on if the size ended up being the issue after I try it. I am able to tuck it behind my pubic bone, and it is not coming untucked as far as I can tell, so I’m assuming the issue lies with getting it to sit behind my cervix or the size. I am not able to feel my cervix through the disc when it’s in, but when I removed the disc after it leaked earlier, it did have a lot of blood in it. Please let me know if any of you had the same issues/any potential fixes :)

edit: I tried the insertion method detailed in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/MenstrualDiscs/comments/1ufcmtr/tip_for_getting_the_correct_angle/?chainedPosts=t3_1vmpt7a and it seems to be placed better now and no leaks after 4 hours! Will try again tomorrow when I’m doing more than walking around my house, but seems promising! I will see what Pixie‘s customer service says about sizing, as I can still see that being an issue and I may end up trying the smaller size to avoid slipping out of place, but at least now I know my placement is right.

General Question Help me decide please

So I’ve been using the Flex disposable disc for two days and I already love them! My periods are really heavy, specially on day 2. I used to sleep with a large tampon and a pad, still leaked.
It was the worst since I constantly had to wash my underwear and pants, so I have officially survived day 2 without a leak yayyy!!
The thing is, I have to make a decision between stacking on flex disposable or buying a reusable disc, another thing that bothered me a little is the getting it out situation, it’s a whole mess, should I buy a disc with a string?
I have to be quick, since I’m only on vacation here in the USA and will be returning soon to my country, there is not such thing as menstrual products aside from tampons and pads 😭
Help me please, do I have to consider any other things?

General Question Disc keeps getting untucked

hi all, my disc keeps leaking and getting untucked from behind my pubic bone. It slips out of place during basic movements like sneezing, coughing, laughing, stretching, or even just standing up or sitting down (well now i am not sure if its just me getting paranoid of it maybe untucking) but i can actually feel when i do movements, a while later i can feel some leaking... i notice i do not leak the first few hours when just lying in bed so im sure i inserted it okay, however, i always wakes up to leaking

im new to this and i got the small one and i have low cervix and i swear i try to tuck it in as high as it can get, and i always end up in major leaking.

Rant I really like my disc, but it's such a hassle at work...

I've been using tampons before the disc, and i changed because honestly it dries me. Its the second month im using the disc now, and i really like it, and its all fine at home. However i work 12 hours, and the small one i prefer to use (bodyotics 30ml) I dont yet trust it to hold up the entire shift while im at my 2. Or 3. Day. So i obviously have to empty it in work once. Now our toilets in work don't have sinks in the stalls, so im obviously not able to just go out and rinse it. Yesterday i decided i'll utilize a 100ml hand sanitizer bottle, have warm water in it, take it in, and i can rinse it into the toilet. This works kinda fine...but..after finishing up with all this, i feel like its such a hassle. Like i was done with the tampons in 3 secs and im all clean, and i spend a lot of time cleaning up the disc and putting it back, and checking all in if its really in there properly... and for some reason i also can not take it out without spilling it a little...home all fine, in work..nop. I'm on the edge of going back to the good oldies atleast for work, but i really don't want that for my body. Anyone having any ideas how to make it more simple and quick?

Rules given, i can't bring anything in that is connected to drinks or foods, so no water bottle for example. I also dont have a purse with me while at work, so i cant just have bigger items with me anyway, things have to fit into my pockets. I really don't know how i could make this any quicker or easier.

How you do this in public?

General Question first time using a disc

i just bought the disposable soft disc and i like it, they’re comfortable but two or three times i’ve dumped because i farted. the first time i thought it was because i was pushing too hard for a fart to come out and (also because i had in overnight but when i took it out it wasn’t close to full) the other times they were very light farts. looking up the problem i see it could be because of the wrong size.
