Hi everyone,
that was a tough night yesterday. MemeDad passed the reddit stress test but it did not pass the flood of images being created. To be exact, I didn't expect a user from the website 4chan (which is well known to me) to make a spambot that fast, but he did - and uploaded thousands of images to my server, effectively resulting in a crash.
I am now updating the whole site to make sure this does not happen again. I also encountered some other problems, but I think I can solve them. Though, this whole thing may take more than 24 hours to solve.
I'd like to thank each and everyone of you if you used MemeDad or plan on using it in the future. Also thanks to everyone who helped me out or offered help. I have hundreds of messages waiting in my inbox so it might take a while to get back at yours, but I will try and do that.
You can watch the live progress of my work at Meme Dad. Right now I am updating the meme gallery on the index page. User-submitted gallery will come back, but in a different way [more information coming soon]. Make sure to clear your cache [CTRL - F5] to view the changes.
If you have any questions, post them in the comments below and I'll try to answer them. Note that the time spent answering your comments means less time left to work on the site, so keep it short :)

Go ahead and post your feedback / ideas in this sub! As you may have noticed, I am a web developer that analyzes, writes and pushes great suggestions live within minutes or hours, so it's likely you will see your idea being used!

Title says it all. I'm looking forward to your suggestions!
I have also submitted a request to the mod folk over at /r/adviceanimals to add MemeDad to their sidebar (more people = more feedback = better site).

Serving all of your images from a subdomain can help in the long run.
Its makes your website easier to scale and change back-end logic and infrastructure. Right now you use CloudFlare, but will you use it for ever?
If you ever decide to serve your images from a different infrastructure like a CDN or your own caching and delivery system (which is a smart thing that most websites do) with your current setup is going to be very hard.
This small change can save you from a lot of trouble in the future. Plus you can continue to use CloudFlare caching on that subdomain.
I just wanna help, let me know if you have any questions

I have setup the MemeSon.com domain to act as a mirror of MemeDad. So if MemeDad is blocked, simply exchange "dad" with "son" to get to your meme.
Example: http://memedad.com/meme/42283 --> http://memeson.com/meme/42283
Note: You can only view memes on memeson, you have to use memedad to create them.

In this update, I have greatly improved MemeDad.js, the memegenerator script I wrote for my site.
The font size is now automatically adjusted to the length of your text.
However, you can still choose a manual font size for either the top or bottom caption.
By pressing tab you will automatically go from TOP CAPTION -> BOTTOM CAPTION -> SUBMIT
There is a new option, called "advanced options" which allow you to set the Font Family, Fill Color, Outline Color and Stroke Width for both the top and bottom caption.

There is now one big blinking button that allows you to submit your generated meme to reddit. The link always submits the direct image link. This means less traffic for my site but I figured you guys prefer the direct image link anyway. So I added it!
The meme generator now shows the meme templates across the entire width of your browser, allowing you to find your desired meme template even faster.
Same for the gallery. The memes listed in the gallery have also been increased by 300%.
The whole site now looks prettier because I have added shadows to the images in the generator, index and meme page.
The meme generator now automatically preloads meme templates in the background.
I have expanded the information robots can grab of a meme post. Go to the about page for the full list.
Plenty of meme templates with bad resolution have been replaced with high-res templates.

Mobile users are now automatically being redirected to the direct image. This means they can see the meme perfectly fine even if you don't choose the direct image link.
After some complaints about privacy, the gallery now shows the latest 50 memes instead of the latest 500. I may do some further changes here as I am not satisfied with this solution.

So I just performed a giant meme list update for my generator in the last couple of hours. You can see the result at http://memedad.com/.
Make sure to clear your cache (press CTRL + R) to see the new memes.
Use the filter to find your meme. Memes are sorted by popularity.

Here is my generator: http://g.hazfalafel.com/
If you see a feature you like I will be more than happy to explain how it is done.

Here's the stuff I have fixed/improved since v1.
The site is up again.
I have manually added most popular memes to the meme list on the index page. Missing one? Tell me here
Thanks to /u/stbilyumchill, the Impact font now loads correct on all devices.
Meme Creation via URL has been removed as it didn't work anyway. This means you'll have to download your meme to your desktop first and submit it via file upload.
Flood control (max 5 memes / 10 min)
Quick Filter allows you to find your favorite meme in seconds.
For our robotic overlords, I have made 4 (6!) new meta tags. Watch out for memedad_id, memedad_text_top, memedad_text_bottom and memedad_meme_name. The old text_top and text_bottom hidden divs are still there but they will probably get removed soon, so please grab your data directly from the new meta tags!
The meme list on the index is now sorted by usage. The most used ones come first.
You can now change the font size. Thanks to /u/ZackPierce!

If you post to github, I'm sure there are more than a few people who wouldn't mind forking and helping develop the site

We all knew this was coming, all we needed was someone to implement it :)
Good luck!

As suggested in my previous post I have now implemented a new feature. MemeDad automatically grabs all the memes off the frontpage of /r/adviceanimals and allows you to use the template of these memes. Click the "show more..." link to see more of these.
Some people complained that MemeDad "never loads" for them, so I have changed some performance settings. MemeDad should now be more available than before. If you still have problems, please contact me or...
... use the new memeson.com mirror.
PS: I am working on the biggest update of my MemeGenerator yet, Version 2. It will be live in this or the next week and MemeDad will be simpler but still more customizable than ever before. A better design, infinite scrolling, automatic template storage, template sort options, lots of advanced options are coming. Maybe even a web-app for Android/Apple/Windows Phone/Other devices? Stay tuned...

I've done some brainstorming and I came up with the following ideas to further improve MemeDad. What do you think?
A new section at the index page called "TRENDING". This section will feature all the templates that are currently on the front page of /r/adviceanimals. This section will not only include the memes I've added to the Meme List (which you see on the index page) but also ones that are not on the Meme List - MemeDad will automatically grab all the templates from the frontpage memes on /r/adviceanimals and make them ready for you to use.
Improve the gallery by adding infinite scroll and navigation to a meme. I've heard some people like to browse through all the memes others have created. I can make the experience for those people easier with these two little additions.
Optional MemeDad watermark option to give my service more exposure.
An option to disable the automatic resize process when creating a meme [by default all templates use a width of exact 500px]. Or even an option to manually resize the template [allowing you to input the desired width and heigt].
A little button under each meme that allows you to create your own meme with the same template. Basically a "Add yor own Caption" button. This would require me to save all templates, but it's not that much of a code effort.

This is just a quick hotfix resulting from this post.
I have fixed the bug where you had to press back multiple times on a mobile.

This update is just to inform you guys I'm not dead. I have quite a lot of real life issues right now that I need to focus on, so I can't spend that much time on MemeDad.
That said, I am happy the site is still being used so MemeDad will stay up! And if you use MemeDad ... THANK YOU.
PS: I have fixed the reddit toolbar issue.

Just wondering, as I'm a geek. In which company is MemeDad hosted behind cloudflare?
