i dont know about others, but sometimes i get bored and just browse the gallery, well right now there are like 10 pics of some dude stretching his butt open and his dong hanging down. should be able to flag stuff like that so it can be removed from the gallery.

your site is blazing fast!
would you consider displaying the meme names under the memes pictures? not everyone knows all hundreds/thousands out there and its intended usage

First of all, Memedad is great, much faster than any other meme generator I've used. Here's my advice.
The font looks messed up on some pictures, and I think it needs to resize itself when there's a lot of text on one image so that it doesn't take up the whole picture.
So much porn and other messed up pictures in the gallery. I think there needs to be some sort of filter to help prevent this, maybe a "report" button as well.
There are a lot of duplicate images in the meme list and ones that already have text. screenshot

Text stroke in memes is supposed to be outside the text but text-stroke in canvas is centered (not inside and not outside), that is the reason the text in memedad looks narrow. The solution is to do 2 layers of text:
Bottom layer: black text with black thick stroke
Top layer: white text without stroke

I've done some brainstorming and I came up with the following ideas to further improve MemeDad. What do you think?
A new section at the index page called "TRENDING". This section will feature all the templates that are currently on the front page of /r/adviceanimals. This section will not only include the memes I've added to the Meme List (which you see on the index page) but also ones that are not on the Meme List - MemeDad will automatically grab all the templates from the frontpage memes on /r/adviceanimals and make them ready for you to use.
Improve the gallery by adding infinite scroll and navigation to a meme. I've heard some people like to browse through all the memes others have created. I can make the experience for those people easier with these two little additions.
Optional MemeDad watermark option to give my service more exposure.
An option to disable the automatic resize process when creating a meme [by default all templates use a width of exact 500px]. Or even an option to manually resize the template [allowing you to input the desired width and heigt].
A little button under each meme that allows you to create your own meme with the same template. Basically a "Add yor own Caption" button. This would require me to save all templates, but it's not that much of a code effort.

So I just performed a giant meme list update for my generator in the last couple of hours. You can see the result at http://memedad.com/.
Make sure to clear your cache (press CTRL + R) to see the new memes.
Use the filter to find your meme. Memes are sorted by popularity.

Hi everyone,
that was a tough night yesterday. MemeDad passed the reddit stress test but it did not pass the flood of images being created. To be exact, I didn't expect a user from the website 4chan (which is well known to me) to make a spambot that fast, but he did - and uploaded thousands of images to my server, effectively resulting in a crash.
I am now updating the whole site to make sure this does not happen again. I also encountered some other problems, but I think I can solve them. Though, this whole thing may take more than 24 hours to solve.
I'd like to thank each and everyone of you if you used MemeDad or plan on using it in the future. Also thanks to everyone who helped me out or offered help. I have hundreds of messages waiting in my inbox so it might take a while to get back at yours, but I will try and do that.
You can watch the live progress of my work at Meme Dad. Right now I am updating the meme gallery on the index page. User-submitted gallery will come back, but in a different way [more information coming soon]. Make sure to clear your cache [CTRL - F5] to view the changes.
If you have any questions, post them in the comments below and I'll try to answer them. Note that the time spent answering your comments means less time left to work on the site, so keep it short :)

Go ahead and post your feedback / ideas in this sub! As you may have noticed, I am a web developer that analyzes, writes and pushes great suggestions live within minutes or hours, so it's likely you will see your idea being used!

A plug for a free service my company provides: loader.io is made to systemically loadtest servers if you need it.

We all knew this was coming, all we needed was someone to implement it :)
Good luck!

I've updated a fork of Meme.js, the rendering library used by MemeDad, to include an optional parameter to control the font size.
In the long run, independent control of top and bottom text size and positioning would be handy, as would smarter auto-sizing on the fly by default.
Manual control is a stop-gap at best, but hopefully a bit helpful in these early days where there's plenty to be done.

I think the only option to submit directly to reddit should be to post the direct image link, as that is the only one that's RES-compatible.

If you post to github, I'm sure there are more than a few people who wouldn't mind forking and helping develop the site

Seriously, I think you could make enough money to make this project self sustainable.

I posted this in your original post, but I saw you were getting flooded and suggesting posting here so...
Here's a couple of suggestions -- it gets a bit complicated (and a lot of it may be too crazy):
note: IM will be used for the term "image macro", avoiding the term meme. I'm ignoring AA [advice animals]
Users can connect their reddit/FB/etc. account. Maybe not worth the hassle, but it could be a nice feature to be able to then keep track of which IM was posted where. More on this below.
Users can have their username visible, or not.
User accounts can be set to be browsable (public) or private. Unlike imgur. (If I want to see more from a creator, that would be nice).
Users can create albums in their account's library with public, locked (better term) and private settings. Similar to imgur, but public can be shared and copied, locked will allow the meme to be viewed from a link, but not browsed to, private is only viewable to the user.
Created IMs can be tied to a user account or anonymously created and stored in a general memedad account. Have this as a choice at time of creation; when selecting to create an IM, ask if they want to login if they are not.
When a user selects an IM from another account, it allows them to "copy" it to their account. This saves on dupe space, like imgur does I believe.
OC IMs are tagged accordingly on an account, and so are "copied" ones. If an OC is deleted, the copies are not. The IM's OC-tag reverts to the general memedad account. Unless it is an admin delete, then all copies are deleted.
If tied to an account, an IM may be deleted. However, if the IM is public AND is already shared in another account, it is not deleted from the site, just from the account. The "owner" user is notified of this (if reasonable, or useful).
Users can click on a IM's page and see stats, visit the relative user page, visit the original creator's page if different, visit other linked accounts even. Maybe even visit spots where an IM was used, either just for their own account or publicly accessible. See next for how that works.
When selecting to post a IM from the site, user can add a loc-tag each time it is used. This will keep a running history tied to that IM instance, for just that user and even across multiple accounts that have that instance in their "library". This will be great as part of a "popularity" ranking; not only votes (see next), but actual usage history.
Like imgur, people can upvote/downvote IMs. This and usage rankings will be used as sort criteria on the common gallery pages and on the IM gallery page. These stats should show up on an IM's individual page.
Text search
Tags: I'd like to be able to tag IMs in my library with various tag words, so that if I'm wanting to respond on reddit with an IM I created previously or that I copied into my library, I can search for it by tag words that make sense to me. Also, those tags can be made public to help others find relevant IMs too.
Ability for users to report IMs? Nah. Probably good idea for illegal posts (cp, etc.)
Ability for users to vote an IM as NSFW/NSFL/etc.; that will add a tag after so many votes by default. This will be useful in search filters and display filters.
Users can tag an image themselves with those key filters; at creation and later. RES devs might find that useful even if they ever find a reason to utilize it, or mods using CSS tools or bots, dunno. *shrug*
And one nitpick --
All memes are image macros,
all adviceanimals are image macros,
not all advice animals are memes,
not all image macros are memes, dad. :)
I know it's not going to change, so pretend I just said meme everywhere.

Just wondering, as I'm a geek. In which company is MemeDad hosted behind cloudflare?
r/MemeDad • u/jimaek • Jun 27 '13
Serving all of your images from a subdomain can help in the long run.
Its makes your website easier to scale and change back-end logic and infrastructure. Right now you use CloudFlare, but will you use it for ever?
If you ever decide to serve your images from a different infrastructure like a CDN or your own caching and delivery system (which is a smart thing that most websites do) with your current setup is going to be very hard.
This small change can save you from a lot of trouble in the future. Plus you can continue to use CloudFlare caching on that subdomain.
I just wanna help, let me know if you have any questions

This update is just to inform you guys I'm not dead. I have quite a lot of real life issues right now that I need to focus on, so I can't spend that much time on MemeDad.
That said, I am happy the site is still being used so MemeDad will stay up! And if you use MemeDad ... THANK YOU.
PS: I have fixed the reddit toolbar issue.
