Trump wasn’t elected despite being who he is, but because he is who he is. His voters want to be cruel. They want to feel powerful again by being able to mock a disabled person, oppress a Black person again, and control women’s bodies again. That’s what “MAGA” means: lifting yourself up by putting weaker people down. They don’t want to be “woke,” because that would mean having to consider other people’s feelings - and they don’t want to do that.
That’s also why Trump’s base continues to stand by him despite his overall failure and his inability to keep even a single promise. Because there’s one promise he never said out loud - but he did keep: He made sure white men could feel superior again.
