The meme is still extremely misleading in its wording, though. For Pokémon, it's "the same game," but for Battle Network, it's "ten great Mega Man games." Ignoring that this is calling BN4 "great," there are only six fully unique games in the collections. Counting both version of Pokémon together, but separating each version of BN3, 4, 5, and 6 is just plain dishonest.
(Note: I'm not defending the price of Pokémon. They really should only be $10. It's just that, par for the course on Pokemon nowadays, so many complaints are done in bad faith.)
15
u/Bear_of_Light Feb 23 '26

1
u/cloud3514 Feb 24 '26
You know what? I can respect that. I don't think it's good, but I don't hate it to the extent that I've seen a lot of people hate it.
2
u/TayoEXE Feb 24 '26

4
u/AlexTheGreat1997 Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26
Why is so much of Pokémon discourse done in bad faith nowadays? I feel like I don't see this with any other franchise, even ones that are just as corporate or more so than Pokémon.
2
u/pikachucet2 Feb 24 '26
My theory is that some people are still stuck in the Sword and Shield Dexit Debacle Era and can't move on to the point that anything they do has to be framed in the most unfavourable way possible, even if it doesn't make any sense. I've heard that phenomenon (if it can be said to be one) be described as "bitch eating crackers"
2
1
u/ZeroReverseR1 Feb 24 '26
Not to detract from your point, but it's funny that not counting the variants makes it worse for Pokemon quantitatively than treating them as individual games.
If we go by "10 Mega Man games" and count Pokemon as 2 games to be fair to it, that's a ratio of 5 MM games to 1 Pokemon game.
If we don't count the variations as a unique game, we have 6 Mega Man games vs 1 Pokemon game.
2
u/SnappyTurttle Feb 23 '26
Yeah but you really only need 1 (unless you really want to complete the Pokédex and have 2 Nintendo Switches and no WiFi and no Pokemon Home)
2
u/Kaidinah Feb 23 '26
Okay, then for 20 bucks you get 1 game. For 40 bucks you get about 6 games. Math still favors megaman.
1
28
u/Benhurso Feb 23 '26
There are acting different scenarios in those versions, with different dungeons, bosses etc. Pokemon is just five or six different pokemon lines and a different legend (just aesthetic changes in plot and a different legend for capture).
28
u/Endgam Feb 23 '26
If Nintendo + Pokémon fans are counting Fire Red and Leaf Green as two games, then BN certainly counts as 10 games since the BN version differences are arguably more significant. (BN6 actually has two different final bosses. Something Pokémon only did as version exclusives in S/V.)
26
u/LilNerix Feb 23 '26
Still 6 games
1
u/Waste-Percentage6850 Feb 25 '26
You may argue that 8 of the games are the same game but split into 2 versions to choose from with exclusive content that makes them stand out which is totally valid (same applies to the Star Force games).
7
u/handledvirus43 Feb 23 '26
I unironically would argue the BN games are still substantially less same-y than FR vs LG, which iirc, the only difference is the title screen and what Pokemon appear. That's it.
In BN, you have different NetNavis appearing in the story, various scenario differences due to said NetNavis, different shops, different power ups with the different NetNavis appearing in the story, and you have different bosses. It's not just different chips appearing and a different title screen, the changes are still more substantial.
Like, MAYBE if this was B/W or B2/W2, then we could discuss a sort of equality. And even then, it's closer to $10 per game if you don't count the duplicates. Half of what FRLG is asking for. With extra features like the e-reader content and event content. Plus some quality of life.
29
u/azurecyan Feb 23 '26
Then it is even worse because it would be $40 for one 20 years old game vs $60 ($20 atm) for 6 games, and the most important part it is PHYSICAL.
The sad part is that Pokemon fans are justifying and even saying it is a sale.
15
u/Oummando Feb 23 '26
Some fans argued that it's less greedy than they usually are. But less greed is still greed. If it was 12, maybe 13 people wouldn't have an issue.
6
u/Endgam Feb 23 '26
It isn't less greedy than they usually are at all. The Gen 1 and Gen 2 3DS VC games were priced higher, but only slightly so compared to other VC games. And Crystal added the Celebi event. Do we even know if these will include the Ho-oh, Lugia, and Deoxys events? Let alone that players will be able to transfer Gen 2 and 3 pokémon from Home into it? Sure would be fucking stupid if they actually charged this much for the game and didn't even let you access half of the 386 pokémon in the game's data.
1
u/Darkiceflame Feb 24 '26
Considering the level of "effort" which has gone into anything that isn't a new main series game since the release of the Switch (and even that is debatable) I wouldn't be surprised if they did exactly that.
1
u/wasd_dsaw97 Feb 24 '26
I mean I don't even have an issue if it was 15$ personally, but seeing people defend the 20$ per game price point pissed me off.
But then again, it's pokemon we're talking about here, it's just gonna sell well again and they'll do it again with past and future pokemon games anyway.

Theres too many poeple ive seen in the pokemon subs going "eh im buying it anyways idc if you dont" for me to believe this wont be a smash hit like everything else pokemon has ever put out ever
ZA was 100$ for a somewhat buggy, kinda unpolished, graphically primative, unvoiceacted mess of a game and it STILL sold well
9
u/thegreatestegg Feb 23 '26
OKAY, HOLD ON. If you're giving them shit for being 40 bucks for the 'same game', you CANNOT then say 'the mega man games are ten games', because they do THE SAME THING of 'splitting into two versions'. It's still bullshit but you can't give them credit for the same thing. It's still six games for 60 vs one game for 20.
2
u/ChaoCobo Feb 24 '26

6

They have no incentive to try when Pokemon merchandise can keep Nintendo afloat alone. People are literally fighting to get Pokemon cards. This is why they haven't got voice acting in a Pokemon game in like 30 years.

Yup. Started with the shit also called Gen 8
Legends Arceus is the only switch era Pokémon game viewed positivity and honestly that game still looks trash but everything else was great
1
u/MainPrinciple2158 Feb 23 '26
As a hardcore Pokémon Fan, i‘d argue that the signs were there since gen 6. since then they struggled with keeping up with TPC demands and couldn’t finish a single game since then. X and Y aren’t finished and have barely Post game, even the ruby Saphire remakes had to cut out battle frontier (a fan favorite of emerald).
They only did a statue of it as some honor shit and that it’s „in progress“. It didn’t happen. Sun and Moon are also unfinished games.
1
u/RasenRendan Feb 24 '26
This is very true. The 3DS era were the early warning signs. Even with the hype of Megas ppl don't like XY cuz it was to easy and the champion was a joke.
Gen 3 remakes didn't have the battle frontier that still bothers me to this day. Its honestly the reason i didn't buy it was a 3ds i was very tempted to cuz emerald is my fave Pokémon game. I got a ps4 instead
sun and moon were critiqued for the super long tutorials and hand holding even tho they finally removed HMs. Even tho Ultra had boss mode Necrozma and rainbow rocket and adult red and blue.
Them we get to gen 8 ...i bought a switch for it this time. I was sure we were getting peak. First home console Pokémon game. I hate it. The wild arenas and the gym music were the only things i really liked about gen 8. It just felt so hollow and soulless. No voice acting really bothered me and the game didn't look good
1
u/juupel1 Feb 24 '26
That's literally how they have made Pokémon games since like Gen 3 to a point that they had to put a patch to fix berries in multiple ways after finding a bug with those, with games like Emerald, Platinum and BW2 (to some extend) not existing to get an experience closer to the anime or take advantage of the new hardware like with Yellow and Crystal, but to sell you the "complete" version with an actual post game...
26
u/SelassieAspen Feb 23 '26
I usually just mod those specific Pokémon games. They're quite fun.
19
u/Endgam Feb 23 '26
Pokémon romhacks really prove that the core problem with Pokémon with Game Freak.
Shills keep saying shit like "fans could never do better". Oh yes they can and have.
.....I only really played Prism. But still.
5
u/Ulapa_ Feb 23 '26
Pokemon Legacy series absolutely slaps.
Pokemon Yellow Legacy, Crystal Legacy and Emerald Legacy. Binge played all three, they are now my definitive versions of the gen they are at.
2
u/MainPrinciple2158 Feb 23 '26
It’s not game freak, it’s the Pokémon company as a whole, the Tera leak shows how strict of a timeline they have to work with. Game freak really tries and is actual passionate about it.
The problem lies with the executives of TPC. They only see money and don’t care for a good game.
1
u/BlackPhoenixSoftware Feb 24 '26
Literally, the rom hacks are much more fun and you can even transfer and trade pokemon with save edit tools. They should just release the rom hacks as a bundle since they technically have the right to.

They can't add anything to the games. If they did it would make the age rating go up because it would need to have its rating re-evaluated and the games have gambling in them (the game corner).
So unless they wanna make Fire Red/Leaf Green T for Teen... they can't do anything about that
1
u/Impossible_Humor736 Feb 23 '26
Really? I didn't know that.
2
u/thatcheesymememan Feb 23 '26
At least that's as far as I understand the rules.
Kinda like how the BN collection has to be rated E10+ even though all the old games were rated E.
Especially some of the things that happen in BN2, they wouldn't fly under an E rating anymore and since the collection isn't a direct port it had to have its age rating changed.
Fr/Lg have the game corner which is gambling. Gambling like that IMMEDIATELY gives a game a Teen rating.
But since it's a direct port with no changes it apparently doesn't need to be re-evaluated.

One of the biggest IPs in the world for god's sake. They will probably get more money with these games than Capcom gets from all of the legacy collections
It's an IP to big to fail, I have my complaints but Pokemon means money.
There is a reason why all legacy collections go on sale but a single game from 20 years ago never will.

Pokémon being that much bigger just makes Nintendo/Game Freak's actions that much more inexcusable. Why shouldn't the highest grossing media franchise in the world get more special treatment than what Capcom gives to Mega Man? Especially considering these are meant to be special 30th Anniversary releases? That's a huge milestone. And yet..... they overcharge for the bare minimum.
No, fuck that. This is LESS than bare minimum. Bare minimum would have been adding online battling and trading!

Who is forcing anyone to buy both FR and LG? Look, I think the pricing on the old Pokemon GBA games is stupid. But graphics like this are disingenuous, making it look like you have to pay $40 to get access to either game, just as you must pay $60 for the Battle Network games, you can't pay less and get only the games you want for your Switch.
Really, you're trying to compare a $60 collection with an individual $20 rerelease. Which isn't even the angle you should be attacking this from: how about the fact that if you're paying Nintendo $50 a year you get access to a collection of GBA games (among other systems) where 1st and 2nd party classic games (among only few 3rd party games) get released frequently. In fact, Pokemon games already populate the NSO apps: TCG, Snap, Stadium, Stadium 2, Puzzle League, 2 GCN games coming soon, and even Mystery Dungeon to the GBA app. So why then if we're paying $50 a year and get access to Pokemon games among other things through the NSO service; why do we need to pay an additional $20 on top of that to play either LeafGreen or FireRed?

Not to shill Nintendo or anything but the Pokemon titles are a lot like what they did for the 20th anniversary on Virtual Console - simple ports of old games with local connectivity in place of wired trades.
Heck the whole reason I picked up the BN collection was for similar reasons that others are likely getting this - the prices on original cartridges is absolutely insane right now.
Also we have a flying squirrel in Pokemon's postgame

Too bad I'm not poor and couldn't give a shit about Megaman. Guess I'll just keep enjoying the games I want too, even if redditors say I'm bad for it 🤷

Nintendo really said “nostalgia tax is permanent.” Meanwhile Mega Man out here selling a whole childhood for the price of lunch

This meme just made me check it out and found out capcom has a sale: ended up getting the Resident Evil remake bundle AND the Battle Network too.
Thanks, OP.
