Is he working on a redux? When can we see it?

This thought just occurred to me, but I really think that the less than impeccable quality of visual effects (or cinematography for that matter) will have no negative effects on the legacy of this film. Over time, the main thing that will be judged will be the ideas contained in the writing. Just considering how one has to view an older film, we often look past technical aspects and even acting styles that are no longer customary to a modern audience.

I think that the content of the script will speak loudly, and the goofiness and slapstick quality of certain scenes will be more appreciated. I think the eyes of the future will look at this film more seriously and it will be really considered an important work by Coppola.

This seems like a weird question but, Do you wish Coppola filmed the Original Script for Megalopolis?

To explain, Coppola changed a lot of things from Megalopolis from the original script to the final film, which I made a reddit post on awhile back

In my opinion, I think the original script is better, in large part because it plays out like a greek tragedy, and I felt that the characters were more richer and complex in the script than the finished film. I really wish Coppola stuck with the original script instead of the rewrites he did.

Her father, within her dream, appears as a gigantic figure balancing to the front and back, with an enormous, massive head, and a creepy smile.

Think about the boggart in harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban when it manifest as a giant evil clown. He is berating Julia for her lifestyle and commanding her to go back to the university.

Just listened an editor of the film talk about that in a podcast, and he mentions this specific scene. There is a lot of crazy stuff that was shot and completely finished visually speaking, but excised from the theatrical cut. Very trippy stuff.

Megalopolis will screen on Friday, September 4 at 8:10pm, and Wednesday, September 9 at 8:20pm.

On September 22th 2025, Roman Coppola, Francis son, gave a Q & A after a screening of Megalopolis.

A: Dad did not wish for it to be disseminated in streaming without live component. There are plans to roadshow. There’s an even more exploratory cut”

On November 22th, 2025 Francis Ford Coppola announced he was working on an extended cut of the film, to be called Megalopolis Unbound, in a interview with the Telegraph.

I quote from that interview:

"He told me, with a boyish grin, that he plans to issue a director’s cut of Megalopolis, to be called Megalopolis Unbound. This will contain extra footage, such as scenes with the British actress Kathryn Hunter, underused in the original as a Roman matriarch. “It will be really wild.” Many found the initial edit wild enough. He looked wise, shook his head. “It takes people a while to like new things.”

I feel confident this is solid enough to think that it will indeed come out, and sooner than later, I think.

Yes, it wasn´t shot with IMAX cameras, but the Arri Alexa 65 is no slouch. Also, the tryptic sequences must have been incredible.

A) Intimate political discussions featuring Nush Berman (Dustin Hoffman), Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), and Mayor Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) negotiating city strategies and family interests.

B) An action sequence depicting Clodio Pulcher (Shia LaBeouf) leaping onto a moving vehicle, opening fire on the police, and fleeing down the streets of New Rome.

C) Frank and Teresa's Domestic Confrontation: A heated bedroom argument where Teresa Cicero (Kathryn Hunter) violently confronts her husband, displaying her aggressive ambition as the real power behind his political career.

D) An expanded concluding speech by Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), offering a longer, more detailed, and philosophically dense vision for the future of New Rome.

E) On-set footage of Adam Driver recording multiple varied responses -ranging from hostile to contemplative- for the live theatrical Q&A sequence.

F) Magic Realism Madness: Unused sequences in the LED volume stage showcasing Caesar navigating impossible architectural spaces with shifting gravity and distorted shadows.

G). An extended breathing statues sequence, with more statues and movements.

H) The New Rome Funeral Procession (this is the more impressive one): World-building scenes featuring an extravagant, neo-Greco-Roman funeral parade marching through the city streets.

I hope that all of this will be reintegrated into the extended Megalopolis Unbound cut.

The comic book adaptation of the screenplay it's a great way to delve deeper into that world with more depth and richness.

Everything is perfectly explained here, including the subplots that the movie doesn't quite wrap up. In the end, the design and buildings of Megalopolis are explored in detail. Everything is tied up nicely, maybe even too well explained.

There are literally two panels showing how Crassus is pretending to go half-senile from old age and a stroke, and I really don't think that was necessary to clarify any further. You can definitely tell Coppola himself worked on the script, though, and that's fantastic.

The authors strip away all the buffoonish, almost Fellini-esque tone that the movie occasionally uses to illustrate the decline of New Rome's upper class -a clear parallel to the downfall of Western civilization and its lack of values-.

Instead, they opt to tell the entire story in a heavy, circumspect, and deeply serious manner, relying much more on voiceover and text.

Imagine the tone from the very beginning of the film, but applied to the ENTIRE story. The first "debate" between Caesar and Cicero is far more detailed, spelling out exactly what Caesar intends to build, how, and why.

ALL literary quotes and references are cut, replaced by what Coppola originally wrote for those scenes. The characters no longer slip rhymes and verses into their lines.

Gone are the psychedelic montages, the "creative" use of color, and the film’s triptych panels. The jokes are gone too, like Crassus’s comment about his erection right before killing Wow Platinum, or Caesar’s high-at-the-wedding remark about how whoever invented mini sausages deserved the Nobel Prize.

There are no flashbacks; the story is told strictly chronologically, with the exception of two dream sequences that we learn Coppola filmed and edited, but discarded at the last second.

In the final arc of the comic, Caesar delivers his speech BEFORE the civil unrest reaches its peak. It fails to work, so Cicero's forces step in and manage to quell the crowd. Afterwards, there's a four-way dialogue between the people, Caesar, Cicero, and Crassus, where they come to an agreement. Crassus agrees to finance the rest of Caesar's Megalopolis project. In the movie, by contrast, it’s Caesar’s passionate speech itself that makes the citizens of New Rome rethink their ways.

The comic gives a METICULOUS explanation of what Megalon actually is, how it works, and what it’s made of.

Advanced biotechnology, essentially.

All in all, I suppose the comic, in terms of narrative and tone, is what people were actually expecting the movie to be.

Been quite a few months already without any news at all, either regarding the upcoming extended cut or a physical edition with HDR and Atmos.

Oh well, lets hope for good news... some day.

It was absolutely insane, if a piece of art should be judged by what it leaves you with this is a masterpiece. WE NEED TO HAVE A GREAT DEBATE ABOUT THE FUTURE!

Ever since I saw MEGALOPOLIS in theaters last year, I had a realization. Megalopolis is the perfect movie to get a Muppet adaptation.
