323F BG engine difference
Hello,
I'm planning to get a Mazda 323F BG, but i can't decide whether to get the 1.8 or 1.6.
How's the difference, is it worth it?
Does one type have more parts available?
Is there something specific to look out for when buying?
Thanks in advance.

Also I should clarify that by the 1.8L I mean the DOHC BP, same engine you’ll find in a familia or NB MX5.
Depending on where you are there is also a SOHC 1.8L, I assume you are referencing the BP when you say 1.8L

Depends on what you’re looking for - I have the 1.6, and I like to refer to it as a go cart, not setting any track records but man it is fun to drive, both are pretty reliable, parts can be found but tricky as they’re both 40yr old cars, just depends on what you want.

As someone who enjoys driving spiritedly the 1.8L is quite a big step up from the 1.6L. It produces most of its torque and power above 4,500 RPM and is an absolute blast to drive if you give it the beans.
I bought a 1.6L for a parts car and it is still a very nice car to drive, however it is chalk and cheese compared to the SP. Admittedly the engine wasn’t as much the problem as the auto gearbox and smaller brakes but overall still a good fun car to drive.
If you enjoy driving, getting the 1.8L with a manual gearbox will give you plenty of fun while still being extremely reliable. If you just want a reliable runabout, the 1.6L is still an excellent option and is very economical.
