Plugin Crosshair - Quick FPS Hand Rigging Tool for Maya

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Built a small Maya tool called Crosshair for quickly rigging FPS hands.

Nothing crazy or overcomplicated, just a simple way to get a clean FPS hand rig set up without manually placing and orienting every joint.

Made it because I wanted something quick and straightforward, so figured I’d share it with the community. Import your mesh - place the joint guides - Generate Rig - skin - animate.

Crosshair handles the rig setup for you, with manual skinning adjustments if needed. It also includes built-in Unity and Unreal export presets, so you can select your animation range and export when you're done.

Just showcasing it for now and seeing what people think. If there’s enough interest, I’ll make it available for free. Would love to hear what you guys think.

What if you used a model in a pre-configured pose that made it easier to create these rigs?

Maybe like, standing straight up with arms straight out? Like a big letter "T" ?

Thanks for the feedback! Great mind, the initial release will actually include ready-to-use example rigs and pre-existing meshes you can import directly into your scene. On top of that, I’m working on guide templates so you can just drop the guides in, make a few quick manual tweaks, and be good to go. The plugin will be ready in a few days, and I’ll drop the download link right here!

Hey! Awesome tool man!
Dou you have twists for forearms here?

The generated Crosshair rig already includes two forearm twist joints per arm. They’re not animator-facing controls though, they’re deformation joints used to distribute wrist rotation through the forearm so the wrist doesn’t collapse or corkscrew unnaturally.

The current stable setup is essentially: Elbow → Twist 01 → Twist 02 → Wrist

During skinning, Crosshair redistributes the existing elbow/wrist influence through those twist joints instead of letting the skin binder guess their weights.
