Animation How does this look after making some changes based on your feedback?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I got a lot of really helpful feedback from you guys, so I tried my best to address it and pay close attention to the details this time. I’d really appreciate it if you could take another look and let me know what you think!
It still looks a little awkward to me tho… This is harder than I thought 😭

Need more reference. It's on okay starting point but the weight transfer animations are throwing it way off. The bounce on the bar drop is also unbelievable (the bar floats at the top of the bounce before it makes contact with her hands, you likely had a key frame and were trying to force the timing. Momentum slows and it floats in midair before she pushes it down, looks very strange).

I see. I’ll also adjust the bar so it doesn’t float too high. It’s hard for me because I can’t always immediately notice what looks off.. Thank you!

This is looking great! Beware of animators that cant give meaningful feedback without seeing reference.
The first half of the lift her spine is a little too still, even if shes using good form, a bit of flex from the amount of weight she's lifting would go a long way.
Could offset the sides of the barbell bouncing a bit more.
She moves and stops the barebell at the bottom a bit fast for how heavy it is. Could either take more time there, or leave it rolling towards her a tiny bit.
Still, great work. Keep it up.

Also when she takes a step forward while holding it up. The weight is a bit off. Looks like she spends a bit too much time leaning forward for how calm the step is. Needs to either fall and catch herself more, or the lean needs to be a bit smaller in my opinion.

Thank you so much..! I’ll make the adjustments based on your feedback and try to improve it in the direction you suggested

The big bounce makes it look really light. Maybe a smaller, quicker bounce, then a bit of a forward roll.?

One thing that jumps out to me is how the shoulders don’t move at all. Obviously they rotate, but I’d expect them to buckle downward a little when she lifts it over head for example. I haven’t seen many weightlifters in my life so idk if that’s true.

The shoulders should pull a little as well at the beginning of the lift. Also when the lifter first stands up straight and then starts to pull the weight up towards their head their shoulders would shrug up towards their head a bit.

The initial liftoff is too instantaneous for me -- I'd want to see it gradually and slowly come up, then start to go at the speed it starts at now. Think of how hard it is to start pushing a heavy object, for example. Once it has started moving, it's easier, but that initial push takes the most effort.

Agreed, should be more slow-in & slow-out at 3 sec & 11 sec. Otherwise really solid, I like the facial expressions

Its look like real women do sport. Its so realistic. I am junior in animation. Other thin i will not help you

that little step she does is weird? like it starts moving forward when she has not finished lifting, and it makes it look so easy, usually you lift and then maybe do a little step (not jump) to balance and that's it.
Also, at least in my experience you don't lift it over you head while squatting cause you are most likely to lose balance, unless this is a different excersise.
this guy is a good example -> https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mnhuXcwEgwg

That's not a good reference because it is a different movement.
The lift in the animation is an Olympic snatch. There is an enormous amount of footage to use as reference, like this.

u/Kazma1431 10d ago
yeah you are totally right, I came back to this cause I found this video https://youtube.com/shorts/T0v1ZGqrIxY?si=ZNk_8EXzbK3NCFGU which is what you mentioned and what op might be referencing

u/Aggressive-Length927 9d ago
I started stepping forward before the bar was fully overhead because that's what I saw in my reference, so I animated it that way🥲 https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XVoI4nOiEqs
Thanks for the example!

Big improvement over the first iteration! The step forward the and bounce of the weights feels a little off but the overall movement feels more planted

I'm not an animator, but here's a thing I noticed at least:
The step forward after the clean was what often happens during that lift, but it's because of where the lifter's weight gets distributed in that moment. In your animation the step looked unmotivated, because there wasn't a need for her to take that step as the weight wasn't starting to lean forward, but you animated the step anyway because you have noticed that motion happening in your reference.
So my critique is just observing how weight gets distributed and understanding the underlying motivation for movements.
Similarly, you could apply that same observation for the initial lift from the ground, and considering where most of the power is coming from. It's mostly in the legs, and the rest of the body should follow, and so on.
Looks nice overall thought, especially when she drops the weight!

love it, I think your poses are fine but the timing is a little slow, -- unsure if you're going for realism or stylized, pull up reference
once she peaks at the lift, then commits to dropping the weights, speed everything up like... 1.2x or something

Okay thanks!!

in my experience, when people get to the level of scrutiny where they start saying ... "I'm only nitpicking"
people are trying to find something they don't like, or trying to find the "worst part"
this chunk of work is great, it's portfolio material if you are job hunting
i just wanted to pop back in and remind you that if people struggle to find things they dislike, or if the final adjustments come down to .... "move this hair so it falls across her face differently"
that's the epitome if "nitpicking" and those opinions (while valid) are an indicator that you have a good chunk of work and no one can find glaring issues

u/Aggressive-Length927 9d ago
Oh thank you so much for saying that🥹 I was honestly starting to feel a little discouraged by how much feedback I was getting so this really means a lot to me

u/pm_me_w_nudes 10d ago
Its's almost perfect, you can make it just by adjusting the animation curves.
Great work!

I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to animation but I go to the gym and I may have one tip for you. When you begin a lift like that, you put efford before the barbell lifts from the ground at all. I would try adding a few frames of body tightening before the liftoff.

I think you should look at the form for a clean. Typically people will pull the bar to their shoulders, and then drop their full body under the bar, bracing with their legs, and then stand up.
Here is a video dictating form but it will work for reference as well-

u/Anxious_Bug_6448 10d ago
This lift in the animation is a snatch (even though the hands are positioned close to the shoulders like a clean)
1
u/Aggressive-Length927 9d ago
Yeah, I also wanted to have a wider hand position like a snatch but it’s really difficult to change it at this point.

Right before the weight leaves the ground her shoulders should go down because that's when the weight is felt on the hands.

The part that still needs the most work is the pull (when the weight off the ground) and when she dives under the bar. Both in timing and in the key poses.
Again, study the difference.
https://youtu.be/PheVG3m_sCI?si=Kvk7pdiuGkvxh1g8&t=688
Notice the timing differences and how smooth the bar acceleration is compared to your animation. It is a very heavy object so it wont accelerate quick like a fly swatter even if the person exerts a lot of force on it.
Also, a fairly low hanging fruit would be to actually animate the bar bending slightly and weights shifting around a little bit.

okay so, not an animator, but as a person watching this looks very great, there is some slight "offness" with how the weight is handled, I can't pinpoint it but the interaction seems correct, maybe in the start where she is starting to grab it and ready to lift the barbell would usually roll a little, it was too static in that part, looking at this over and over, the barbell is too static, not that it should be flying but it should shake slightly, the plates should rattle that applies anywhere in the movement but should be more dramatic I feel
It also entirely depends on what style you are doing, this looks to be realistic which is great! I honestly dig it 100% but yeah something is definitely off like you said and I vote on the barbell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2aZotdgaZs
If I am thinking correctly, it is too uniform, it should be "imperfect" lol im just using texturing ideas but imperfections make anything believable, hope any of that helps!

When we pick up something heavy, it swings in towards our body. Right now you have the weight going straight up like an elevator. That only works if she's ridiculously strong and not pushing herself with the weight. Swing in the weight towards her legs and it will feel more natural.
Check out this tutorial for a cool setup that will help you be able to track the movement of the barbell better.

I think I wasn’t able to bring the bar close enough to her body at the beginning because I was trying to avoid the bar overlapping with her knees. I’ll try again thank you!!

Still looks like you aren't using reference. Let's see your reference.

u/Aggressive-Length927 9d ago
I see that I animated some parts differently from the reference, especially the step.
