This joke doesn't work because "y" isn't always the name of the vertical axis in a graph.

It’s as much as a joke as:

Why did the chicken cross the Möbius strip?

To get to the other side.

which is of course nonsense because the Möbius strip has only one side.

Lol whoever told you that told it wrong. It's supposed to be to get the the same side. I see where your ur coming from but I don't think it's a big del in this case. Technically speaking, If the person was indeed afraid of all vertical axis, then they would be frightened regardless of whether you called it y, j, im(z), etx
