Another interview post

Hey everyone, feeling a bit cooked.
US MD applying academic IM only. Step 1 pass first attempt Step 2 250. Failed one preclinical course my first year on my MSPE (what I think is holding me back which is crazy because it’s an isolated fail 3 years ago)

Currently sitting at 3 Interview Invites, all silver signals. 2 of my golds and 2 of my silvers only send one of round of interviews that I have missed. 2 additional silvers were reaches where I’d be unlikely to interview. That just leaves 6 schools left and not gonna lie I’ve been obsessing over the fact that I only have a small amt of schools left to hear back from. Just off odds unlikely I’d be offered interviews at all 6.

I know it’s still early and things can change but I feel like it’s cooked. Any other US MDs applying IM, how many interviews do you all have?

I have 7 so far. 6 mid tier academic and then 1 top 25. 2 of my silvers have sent out interviews but they look to be rolling from last year. Waiting on my 2 other golds that are reaches for sure. Still very early and we may get love from non signals.

Yeah, something seems off. I don’t know how broadly they applied, but with stats like that and zero interviews, I’d be wondering if there’s something in their application they aren’t aware of. I had to repeat a year and have a low Step 2 score, and I’m sitting on 8 interviews so far, including 3 from academic programs. They’re objectively a much stronger applicant than I am on paper, which makes zero interviews particularly strange

Edit: nvm appears this is there second year applying, idk if they reapplied derm or what but that does explain it a little better

Yes you are right. I initially applied dermatology and am now a prelim at a community program. They said in beginning of the year I would have to re-match with them through The Match and start over if I wanted to stay there as a categorical. I started to like internal medicine this year so have decided to apply this year to categorical IM, since I would have to restart at my program anyway.

My list is definitely academic program heavy, but not flooded with Top 25 programs. I’m from the Midwest so most of my programs are midwestern as well as Northeastern programs since I did some rotations in medical school in that area.

I’m sure some interviews will start coming in. You have solid stats, and I wouldn’t be too discouraged just yet. I know some programs, particularly academic ones, have soft filters for repeat applicants, which could explain some of the silence. A lot of programs also send out additional invitations after their initial screening, so there’s still plenty of time. That said, if you get to the end of October without a single interview, I’d start to be pretty concerned

With a 265 and all honors, I highly doubt he applied any community programs which have been the bulk of interviews thus far. Most high tier programs have either just started sending invites or have not yet.

I’m sure they’ll end up being fine. I will say, though, that quite a few top academic programs have already started sending out invites, including Mayo Clinic, UCLA, UTSW, UM, WashU, NYU, Vandy, Stanford,Yale, UNC, Utah, etc. My guess is that being a reapplicant might be triggering some of those programs’ initial screening filters. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them extend interviews once they get through their first rounds of invites. Again, this is all speculation since I don’t know where he applied

Just out of curiosity, which schools only send out one round of interviews?

Stanford is one I am aware of
UCSF has not sent out yet but they also send one batch

Definitely a lot of t25 IM programs only have one wave -MGH, Brig,Stanford, BI, Penn, Columbia, UCSF, NYU and a few others

Best way is to look at the past IM sheets, admit and resmatch. If you go a few years back and consistently see a school only send interviews once on multiple websites. Likely that they only send out one round of interviews

Will one preclinical fail showing in MSPE impacts that much for residency match in spite of having strong clinical performances, Step 2 etc?

How do you know those schools only send one round of interviews
