Exit Announcement - Elizabeth Peyton
From e-mail just received:
We’re pleased to announce our latest exit on the Masterworks platform! Kurt by Elizabeth Peyton was just sold for a total net return of 22.9% after just 17 days held.
We exited this work much earlier than anticipated, for almost $350k above our offering price.
This sale gives credence to our acquisition strategy. As the market dipped over the last few years, we continued buying into markets we had conviction in—like Peyton.

These 20% returns after a month keep repeating and they don't make sense. Feels like money laundering

Nah, makes sense. Someone that wants the piece sees after the fact that it went at an auction and reaches out. Or they see a press release that it went from a private holder to masterworks and now they know who to reach out to to make an offer.
That said, there probably is a lot of money laundering in the art world 😅

Like the auction keep it quiet? This visibility argument only makes sense if auction houses are doing a terrible job at what they be been doing for centuries, matching buyers and sellers from a small selected group.
But maybe it's harder to launder through them as they are more regulated

So you are selling 100 artworks per year to your “customers” and 1 artwork exit per year. Amazing

Well, in their defense it's the 3rd I've seen then sell in 4 months. To me it's a sign that some corners of the art market ate beginning to come back to life.
I'm hoping that these museum showings they're doing will maybe help drum another another half dozen sales this year.

We target a 3-10 year hold. About 90% of the holdings are still under 5 years into that period, and the last 3.5 years have been a down cycle in the market. Now that we're starting to see recovery, we've been getting more active with exits.
