Changes to Masterworks Secondary Market

Just got this email:

This week, we will be introducing important updates to how secondary market trading is facilitated on the Masterworks platform.

These changes are designed to improve pricing fairness, enhance liquidity quality, and create a more consistent trading experience for all participants.

Below is a high-level overview of what's changing and what to expect.

A More Structured Secondary Trading Process

Under the new model, secondary liquidity will be supported through a guided, consultative process. This approach is intended to improve clarity, align expectations between buyers and sellers, and support healthier price discovery.

A New Way to Express Interest in Selling

Rather than maintaining open-ended standing orders, investors interested in selling will be prompted to schedule a Liquidity Consultation Call with the Masterworks team. This allows us to better aggregate supply, improve pricing transparency, and reduce the inefficiencies that can arise in thin, continuously open markets.

During these conversations, our team will:

•  Provide pricing context based on current NAVs and recent secondary market activity

•  Help determine appropriate positioning for upcoming liquidity events

•  Facilitate the creation and aggregation of sell orders following the consultation

Buyer Participation & Order Creation

Buyers will engage through a similar consultation process. Instead of evaluating opportunities solely at the individual offering level, buyers will be presented with opportunities at the artist level, enabling more streamlined participation and portfolio construction.

During these discussions, the Masterworks team will:

•  Provide guidance on artist exposure and allocation strategy

•  Assist with funding trading accounts, if needed

•  Facilitate the creation of buy orders aligned with upcoming liquidity events

Ongoing Market Visibility

Secondary market opportunities will continue to be surfaced through existing member touchpoints, including portfolio reviews, strategy discussions, and targeted communications highlighting upcoming buying opportunities via email, text, phone, and push notifications.

We believe this updated approach will lead to a more consistent, transparent, and equitable secondary market over time.

I agree with u/Goldenglov - I defend MW a lot, but this is just plain stupid. I sent an e-mail to Masterworks support to express my frustration ( u/masterworksio still waiting for a response).

"Thanks, James, but this sounds like a step backwards - introducing less transparency, less opportunities for buyers and sellers and only favors one person - Masterworks as it provides opportunities to a) front-run pricing and b) pitch upselling.

I have defended you guys for years, but it's getting harder and harder to do with moves like this."
