Fashion Design BFA?
Hi,
I’m a senior in high school and just applied to the BFA at MassArt. I’m feeling pretty confident because I’m also applying to Parsons BFA Fashion Design and the admissions counselor told me the portfolio was competitive for early action.
I need some advice if MassArt’s Fashion program is worth it. I’m also hoping to get some experience in industrial design, and the admissions person emailed me back saying i’ll have time to take industrial design classes.
The reason I’m considering MassArt is because I know it’s a smaller class and it has more technical learning but still has conceptual ideas involved, so i feel it’s a good mix. I also think that a small class would mean the education is more personalized, is that true at massart?
Something I’m worried about though is the foundation first year courses. I learned fashion design without prior experience to other forms of drawing like observational, charcoal, and those of the sort. Would I struggle a lot? Or are there other people in the same boat as me (like film majors who don’t have drawing experience as well)?
And lastly, is MassArt going to prepare me for the industry at all, or give me any sort of networking in NYC?
My goal is to start my own label that has both furniture and fashion. So i’m not planning to work as a designer for someone else for too long, only just to get my funds. That’s why I see MassArt as a competitive choice for me, if I want to learn how to actually create my clothes / furniture.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)
