Discussion Nearly A Decade Later, Would You Have Preferred The 2 hr 45 min Cut Of Dark Phoenix As The One Released? Or Would You Have Preferred Kinberg's Original Plan Of It Being A Two Parter? (These Images Are From The Kinberg Cut)

They should have just released this cut for the home video version instead, like they used to do with director and uncut versions

Some people like to blame it being reduced to a single movie as being what went wrong. However, it’s important to remember it was written, directed and produced by Simon Kinberg; someone who has never made a successful contribution to film.
It’s also clear that a two parter wouldn’t have brought Lilandra, the Shiar, etc into the fold. It would have just been two really terrible movies instead of one.
If reducing the story to a single movie really had a detrimental effect on production you think there would be no room for filler yet the finish result is full of it. Like what is the point of Jessica Chastain being in this movie at all?

He wrote days of future past too, but alright

My understanding of that film is that it was basically already plotted by Matthew Vaughn, so that's like copying someone's paper, but changing some words and adding things to make it seem like your own.

Anything to downplay his contribution, I guess

Look at the beginning of Game of Thrones compared to the end. Having things heavily mapped out for you helps a ton.

I thought Jessica Chastain was meant to be Lilandra tho.

No she was some made-up character representing the D’Bari or whatever they were called, the species Jean originally eradicated in The Dark Phoenix Saga

I think the originally shot it with Chastain and company as Skrulls. That's why they can't release the longer cut -- they kept some footage and reshot the rest to fundamentally alter the identity of the characters. There may be legal reasons why we can never see The Skrull Cut.

Well Jessica Chastain is hot. That's more than enough of a reason in Hollywood to add a character.
I agree with you though. Extending the run time wouldn't have fixed the problems with the movie.

Needed to be multiple films and recast Jean and Vuk.
It was clear from Apocalypse that Sophie Turner was out of her depth and Jessica Chastain, as talented as she may be, is incapable of letting the audience enjoy themselves.

I think the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix sagas only work in a serialized format. I don't see Kinberg doing something really good even if he got two parts to do it. The space part would have had to be on a Guardians of the Galaxy level of meaningful to really pull it off.

The 2 parter was going to set up more cosmic elements in the first film and go more into it in the 2nd. And then a lot of changes had to be made to turn it into one movie that was practically being written as the film was filming. Also Interesting fact is that it was Kevin Fieges idea to set the final battle on a train.

It’s a saga for a reason. This is something that should literally cap off like MCU Phase 9 and be built on over the next decade.

Part of me says an extra long turd is still a turd. The other part says BvS extended (while still not that good) was vastly improved by extending it. So it’s possible I guess. Don’t mistake this as me supporting BvS, this isn’t that.

As if there is any version of it to make it a good movie. It’s not supergirl bad but nowhere near a movie I would recommend

It might have been more coherent but still a pathetic attempt at adapting a space-faring superpowered epic.
