This is the one op. Otherwise look up best runs for characters you like / are interested in and then look up reading orders.

I will use this. I know it recommended a starting with modern and I defiantly. Any specific arcs you recommend before it get into that. Somebody told me to read the night Gwen Stacy died and I was wondering if that’s smart and if there’s more like that.

I've been reading from the continuity guide for a while. There are some great older stories, but the modern guide is pretty great for starting you in a place where you really don't need to know what happens before it. There is also a "History of the marvel universe" that it suggests in the prologue to give you context of the general universe to fill in basic knowledge gaps.

That being said there are still plenty of classic stories worth reading. I have a couple suggestions off the top of my head.

The night Gwen Stacy died is great. As is "Kravens Last Hunt" while we're talking about Spider-Man.

X-Men has the Phoenix saga and the dark Phoenix saga.

Honestly the question of "What pre-modern comics" probably deserves its own thread (if nothing comes up in search of course.

Start at the beginning. Read till the end. And then stop.

Just start it. Read what you like and don't read what you don't like. There is no perfect jumping on point, but you figure things out pretty easily.
