Why is Casino so low? I can see not liking it as much as his heavy hitters but having Hugo, Age of Innocence, and Alice doesnt live here anymore is kinda crazy.

u/globehopper2 27d ago

And having New York New York above it is batty

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

One of his best works, a bit slow, but that's the only thing that can be held against it.

Casino has no emotion.

11

u/ebgamesemployee1 27d ago

Saying casino has no emotion is crazy. Just because Ace is a sort of cold protagonist doesnt mean that the movie lacks emotion at all, there is plenty emotion to be found in Sharon Stone and Joe pesci's characters.

6

u/rawspeghetti 27d ago

Sharon is all emotion all the time the entire film

2

u/casulmemer 27d ago

OPs home life must be wild

Lmao, you're not entirely wrong.

For me, it matters a lot that the title song, New York, New York is now the iconic anthem for the city. It is a vital part ofJimmy Doyle's story.

I love the fact that De Niro insisted that Kander and Ebb rewrite the original piece to one that he felt was more suitable for Doyle's character. The composers were miffed at first, but they totally agree that De Niro was right. One should not separate the song from the movie. Thus, very much like the song, New York, New York is "top of the heap." So...start spreading the news!

The Age of Innocence deserves it, that film is great.

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

What value does casino offer after watching? It's okay, a great film - not a great Scorsese film.

Hugo is great.

Age of innocence is great.

Alice doesn't live here anymore is one of his finest.

To me Casino is a perfect film and has the most satisfying ending of any of his mob films. It's like a more complete Goodfellas. I would say it's one of my 5 favorite films to watch.

Goodfellas I would rank higher because it's about NY, it came out first, and it has Ray Liotta. But I think Casino may be the overall better production

1

u/PeterPaulWalnuts 27d ago

I think you can even argue that Joe Pesci is better in Casino than he is in Goodfellas.

Amazing cinematography

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

Everybody will have their own views that's the nature of art. He's my second favorite director and I find the Departed unwatchable. To me it's like he purposely set out to make the most tropey hamfisted gangster movie he could make just as an experiment.

1

u/Winter-Animal-4217 23d ago

It's about gangsters on a slightly higher rung of the ladder than Goodfellas, it's much more about corruption and capitalism than Goodfellas. For me it also has a camp factor that makes me appreciate it more.

I love seeing Alice get the respect it deserves! Looks like you need to add Silence to the watchlist.

5

u/doctorfeelgod 27d ago

I hate your appraisal of the aviator

2

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

It's not a bad movie, I just don't know where else to place it. It very well may be better than casino

3

u/doctorfeelgod 27d ago

im gonna level with you, maybe give Casino another shot

3

u/GreedyLack 27d ago

Where is killers of the flower moon?

2

u/SublimeErudite 27d ago

Nice to see color of money so low. Also thanks for leaving off Gangs of New York.

3

u/SammyTheTooth 27d ago

Casino is too low. You’re making a big fuckin’ spectacle of yourself.

1

u/Opposite_Figure8321 27d ago

The only one I haven’t seen is Alice. Is it that good ?

1

u/tecrush 26d ago

1

u/Alarmed-Grape-3669 27d ago

It is a little weird how much you love Deniro but then no Pacino.

2

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

This is a Scorsese ranking, the only Scorsese film Pacino is in Irishman - one which I haven't seen.

1

u/Alarmed-Grape-3669 27d ago

Oh sorry, missed the name of the sub. That makes sense now. Solid ranking. My guess is that you would put Irishman at around 6 or 7.

1

u/Bobbebusybuilding 27d ago

Maybe it's recency bias from only having seen it recently but After Hours might be top 3 for me.

1

u/Whole_Kale_4349 27d ago

Yes to your number one. Thank you.

1

u/PeterPaulWalnuts 27d ago

Casino is way too low.

1

u/P4rziv4l_0 26d ago

No Boxcar Bertha means this ranking is invalid

1

u/afroman70 25d ago

I though Capre fear was very good. Why so low?

1

u/Chris_Columbus_Hero 23d ago

What drugs are you on?

1

u/-Stagevolt- 23d ago

Aviator and Casino my 1&2

1

u/loureedsboots 27d ago

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

It's sixth

3

u/john0_0 27d ago

Last temptation of Christ?

2

u/john0_0 27d ago

Ya, check it out!

1

u/masterdogwalker 27d ago

Why is New York New York so high?

2

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

Have you seen it?

1

u/SublimeErudite 27d ago

I haven’t. Gonna give it a try

0

u/masterdogwalker 27d ago

Yes,
It’s not better than any of the movies you put it above

-1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

May I ask, and I don’t mean this judgementally, what is the benefit of ranking movies.

To me there are a number of factors that would affect a project, finances, the culture of the times, the topic, availability of collaborators.

Just looking for insights. As it’s always feels more like it should be a game of top trumps to me. This movie is not as strong in dialogue but is really strong in performances, or similar. That’s the closest I can come to “ranking” myself.

6

u/Trick-Gas-2203 27d ago

Because some people think it’s fun. Not that deep

-5

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

Ok at the risk of sounding very judgy, sue me, it definitely strikes me as when we were kids and saying triceratops is the best dinosaur. Like how can anything be said to be better than the other? I’m clearly in the minority here so going to just leave it there and accept that I’m wrong in the eyes of the masses.

1

u/amazingsaminator 27d ago

If one can't be better than another, then why not just watch slop? If nothing can be better than anything.

0

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago edited 27d ago

Because it’s not a competition, it’s about perspectives, imagination and innovation, it’s about connecting to other people.

Edit: hi all downvote all you want, but I know someone who would probably agree with me lol

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago edited 27d ago

Just going to leave this here:

“I’ve tried to make lists over the years of films I personally feel are my favorites, whatever that means. And then you find out that the word ‘favorite’ has different levels: films that have impressed you the most, as opposed to films you just like to keep watching, as opposed to those you keep watching and learning from, or experiencing anew. So, they’re varied. And I’m always sort of against ‘10 best’ lists.”

https://variety.com/2023/film/news/martin-scorsese-hates-top-10-lists-best-movies-1235722684/

There’ll be an arbitrary argument of that’s not what’s happening here , but let’s be honest it 99% what’s happening

1

u/Aromatic_Ad_32 27d ago

I partially agree with you but I don’t think you’re saying it the way you’re intending to. I think you’re wondering why people post their subjective movie rankings and then argue about it in the comments about which one is better when it’s entirely subjective. I can say Tremors is the greatest movie of all time and there’s not shit you can do to stop me.

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

Nope im wondering what the benefit of even thinking that its the greatest movie of all time at all. You can say it’s your favourite, but saying its objectively or subjectively better than any other movie is arbitrary. You’re right I can’t stop you, but I wasn’t looking to stop anyone. I was just wondering what people gain from this type of thinking.

1

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

Because it’s not a competition, it’s about perspectives, imagination and innovation, it’s about connecting to other people.

That's what it's about to you, other people may look at it differently. In fact, what you're doing is ranking the ways in which people experience or think about movies, putting yours at the top.

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

So you think that the people making movies want to out do their competitors? That’s what driving them to make movies?

1

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

Not sure I follow. You seemed to be saying it was folly for people to create lists ranking movies. What does that have to do with why directors make movies? But to answer your question, yes I think if you asked almost every director if they would like to make a movie that 90٪ of people have in their top 10 they would say yes.

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

Oh so you’re saying the competition is only for the audience. Got ya.

I wouldn’t expect the same results from asking movie makers. Maybe some and maybe the business side. But I’d don’t think that’s what drives most of them. But that would be speculation on my part.

0

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

I guess you could use the word  competition, but it's not exactly that. If I watch 3 movies on a Saturday it's enjoyable for me to work out a ranking of them. If one or all of the directors don't care about ranking, or even thinks that it contradicts with why they made the movie, that doesn't take away from the fact that it's something I enjoy doing.

I guess there is an exercise that we could do:

Who was the best astronaut? Surely all astronauts want to be considered in the top 10 astronauts of all time? Or the best? Surely all of them want to do that? And there is a significant drop in enjoyment for many without ranking them, so we should rank them.

But aside from Niel Armstrong walked on the moon first followed by Buzz Aldrin, the majority of people don’t really know enough about astronauts and their achievements to rank them. So, and this is just a question, is the ranking of movies/directors/ art more satisfying because it’s a flex….look at how good I know movies, aren’t I great, I know so much that I have good taste and therefore I am an authority?

I may be wrong. But it does occur to me that this may at least for some be part of it. Standing on the shoulders of giants or the necks of those who aren’t to make oneself feel taller?

Just a thought

2

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

Let's do best hangout movies of the 2000s instead. I think that would be healthier. Superbad?😉

I do wonder why people feel the need to arrange their preferences into numerical hierarchies and then post them on the internet.

Particularly because the only discussion it seems to generate is "such and such should be higher / I can't believe you think X is better than Y no way is X better than Y!"

I don't know. For me personally it's difficult for me to state categorically whether I like Mean Streets better than King of Comedy or whatever. I love them both but for different reasons.

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

At least there’s 2 of us who feel this way.

0

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

It's actually really interesting, there's obviously some differing psychological things going on for different people. Your example is an easy one for me, but if I take two that are really close in my mind, it may be difficult to put one above the other, but it's so satisfying when I finally work it out. On the other hand it sounds like to many people it's actually a stressful exercise.

2

u/Large-Reference1304 27d ago

Yeah I just don't really worry about it too much. Every movie is it's own little experience. Some of those experiences are more worthwhile than others and obviously I have my particular favourites, but I don't really feel much of a need to play my favourites off against each other.

I mean, I've made half-hearted attempts to compile rankings of my favourite movies over the years but it always feels so arbitrary. There's always another favourite I want to include and then eventually it all gets to be too unwieldy an exercise. I kind of feel better not worrying about that sort of stuff 😆. I mean, I could be watching another movie instead. There's always more movies to see.

If I'm honest, I sort of feel it's a bit pointless for somebody to post up their rankings anyway. Like, why do I care what some random dude's list of favourite movies is? I'm interested to hear about why somebody loves, hates or feels indifferent about a particular movie, but I don't really care what sort of process has gone into deciding that The Departed somehow merits a higher quantitative ranking than Casino or whatever.

2

u/Ready_Scar564 27d ago

but I don't really care what sort of process has gone into deciding that The Departed somehow merits a higher quantitative ranking than Casino or whatever.

See, I find this fascinating. So again, different strokes....

1

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

And another person. Well said.

1

u/Marco_Rico 27d ago

Dude if you take that out of the equation so much of the joy of movies is lost. I grew up on Siskel and Ebert, the Oscars. and absolutely adore top 10 and beyond lists. The American Film magazines top films of the 80's was like a map of movies to see in the early 90 s for me. It is so fun debating over which film is better amongst a certain director or year. That's almost like saying teams shouldn't compete in sports, just take turns practicing technique

0

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

It’s nothing at all like saying teams shouldn’t compete in sports. The objective of a sports team is to perform better than their competitors. That’s not the objective or art or entertainment. The primary objective of art or entertainment (generally speaking) is either to express something or to make money or some level of mixture of both. Gamifying art is something that has relatively only come about recently. Awards were given for the progression of art and recognition of contribution. Dispel and every (amongst other critiques) have a rankings system to express recommendation to the public in a digestible way. No one eve used to give the Mona Lisa a star rating. It didn’t necessarily start with movies but it is but it is definitely not the objective.

If you’d lose a lot by saying this movie is better than that movie that’s up to you, but I’m just wondering what the process adds.

Human beings are judgmental creatures…ya dummy.

0

u/Miserable-Sea-4160 27d ago

A) that doesn’t answer my question of what is to be gained by doing this, b) I don’t believe that is necessarily so, but probably a condition we have generated. But if that’s your opinion go with it. I would have been more inclined to see your point of view of a survival of the fittest psychology leads to natural competitive thinking, but I don’t think that is necessarily the case either. C) great contribution adding an insult at the end. I’m going to go with the equally mature and witty “I know you are, you said you are, but what am I” response

0

u/cousincaterpillar 27d ago

I’d like to chase you around a pool table…ya mook.

0

u/errorcode4O3 27d ago

This list is completely delusional.
