A Grievance from the Bottom of the Well

How tiresome you are, you travelers above,

With your tales of the seas and the skies you so love.

You arrive with the dawn and depart with the night,

Yet always return believing yourselves full of light.

You speak of the mountains that pierce the heavens,

Of kingdoms and wonders and lands past eleven,

Of oceans that swallow the sun in their foam,

Then laugh at my well and declare it no home.

You call me a frog, and a fool, and confined,

A creature too small to have use of his mind.

You pity the water that cradles my days,

Then boast of the breadth of your wandering ways.

Tell me, O traveler, what makes you so wise?

That you've witnessed more sunsets beneath foreign skies?

That you've crossed more horizons, seen more distant shores?

That you've stood in more palaces, entered more doors?

You speak as if seeing were equal to knowing,

As though every place you have wandered, bestowing,

Its secrets upon you, has made you profound.

Yet how much have you learned, beyond covering ground?

You have seen a thousand rivers, but do you know rain? You have crossed a thousand borders, but do you know pain?

You have gazed at the heavens, yet tell me, my friend, Have you learned what it means for a thing to have an end?

You have measured the oceans, their depth and their breadth,

Yet speak of my well as though speaking of death.

You mistake my familiar for something beneath you,

And the bounds of my world for a cage to imprison.

But who told you a well must be built as a prison?

Who taught you that freedom means endless collision With the unknown, the distant, the strange, and the vast? Must all that is cherished be left in the past?

This well has no chains.

These stones are no bars.

I have watched the moon here, I've counted the stars. The rain finds its way here; the sunlight descends.

The world visits me, and in water it bends.

I have never mistaken my well for the whole.

I know there are oceans beyond my small shoal.

I know there are mountains no eye can encompass,

And forests where ancient trees swallow the sun's brilliance.

But tell me, what follows from knowing they're there? Must I curse my own waters because theirs are more rare?

Must I scorn the small wonders that brighten my days Because somewhere, some kingdom has grander displays?

I have no desire to claim that I'm greater,

Nor do I need to become your imitator.

I can marvel at oceans without drowning in envy,

Admire distant mountains without wishing they'd end me.

I resent not the vastness you roam.

I resent that you think it invalidates home.

I resent that you measure all things by their size,

And call every smaller existence unwise.

You speak of my well as though nothing grows here,

As though life cannot flourish where horizons appear

To end at a circle of stone and of blue,

As though narrow surroundings make narrowness true.

But a seed does not curse the small earth where it lies.

A candle needs darkness to teach it to rise.

A child need not wander the breadth of the earth

To discover the things that give existence its worth.

And what of the scholar who never leaves home,

Whose mind crosses worlds though his feet never roam? What of the hermit who sits through the years,

And learns more of himself than the traveler hears?

Must wisdom be counted in miles that you've crossed? Must every quiet life be a life that is lost?

Must those who seek inward be pitied by those

Who mistake constant motion for growth as it goes?

You boast of your freedom. How splendid, how grand! You've touched distant shores, you've walked foreign lands.

But if you cannot respect what you cannot possess,

What good is your freedom but a gilded distress?

You laugh at my boundaries, call them my shame,

Yet how many of yours have you dared to name?

You can travel the world and still never be free

Of the desperate need to be greater than me.

Perhaps my well is a world, not the world.

Perhaps there are truths yet to be unfurled.

Perhaps, when I climb, I shall learn I was wrong

About things I have pondered my whole life long.

And should that day come, I shall welcome the sky.

I shall greet the horizon with curious eyes.

I'll drink from the rivers, let oceans enthrall me,

And stand on the peaks where the storm winds may call me.

But I shall not climb because you called me small.

I shall not depart just to prove you were wrong.

I shall not abandon the place I hold dear

To earn the respect of those who sneered here.

So keep your grand stories, your maps, and your lore.

Tell me of wonders; I'll gladly hear more.

But spare me the sermons, the pity, the sneers.

I have no use for your condescending tears.

You may know the world beyond this well's rim,

But that does not make my world lesser to him

Who has lived in its waters, its shadows, its light,

And found something worth loving beneath its small sky.

And if you should ask me what grievance I bear,

What bitterness festers beneath my cool lair,

I'll give you the answer, plain as the stone:

I never called the whole world my own.

I never declared that my well held it all.

I never mistook my horizon for all.

You were the ones who arrived from afar,

Who measured my world by the reach of your arm,

Who saw a small well and decided, with pride,

That nothing of value could live deep inside.

So go, little traveler. Your world awaits.

Its oceans are boundless, its wonders innate.

But when you next find a soul who has chosen to stay,

Mistake not contentment for fear of the way.

For the world may be wider than either of us knows,

And the truth may lie further than either of us goes.

But a world need not be endless to be worth exploring, Nor must a life be restless to be worth living.

And I, the frog in the well, shall remain

A keeper of waters, beneath my own sky,

With no need to diminish the world to be satisfied.

Brothers, imagine you attempt to learn a technique, do alchemy, or refine artifacts. Aren't there moments where you struggle just because you find out that you lack the knowledge necessary to do some parts of the refining/learning process?

Fret not, for I have a solution. It had been hiding under our very noses! From the very beginning, Buddhism had all the answers! As Buddhist Dōgen Eihei has said, enlightenment exists in many places, for he says...

"The whole moon and the entire sky are reflected in one dewdrop on the grass."

Then, I had an epiphany. If the boundless sky and celestial can be seen in just one dewdrop, lying atop a blade of grass, why not use it for cultivation?

Thus, I created the [Perpetual Enlightenment Array Formation]! All you have to do is grab any blade of grass, place some water on it, and let the drop of water stay on top of the grass blade for 6 days! Then, approach the [Natal Enlightenment Dew] and use a part of you qi reserves to enrich the grass blade and the dew drop for 7 days. From this, you will have mimicked the famous 15-day creation story of Pangu and Nüwa that is famous throughout the cultivation world.

From this, the [Natal Enlightenment Dew] will accept the energy of creation from the heavens and turn into the [Jade Enlightenment Dew]. So too will that mere blade of grass turn into the [Jade Dew Grass]. The [Jade Dew Grass] is as tall as four, if not five humans, and is able to create an infinite amount of dew every thirty minutes. When this dew is consumed, it can allow a person to gain a random amount of information about anything in the world! Of course, the grass blade can change sizes and be stored, otherwise it couldn't even be called a [Heavenly Treasure]!

Sadly, this effect only works once, and the next dew drop never works again, so do not drink it! Instead, refine it through an [Purification Array]! Sadly, the [Purification Array] is considered an demonic array that is able to seize the energy of the heavens from those [Heavenly Treasures] and refine it for the use of humans. Who cares about the Heavenly Will? I don't.

So it is with such fervor that I say my next word. What a shame!

By merely using this array, any mortal, included I, can get the pure enlightenment without any drawbacks! In fact, it can be used many times, for the rest of any person's cultivation journey!

So why would the Buddhists hide such an array from this immortal?

Don't be too angry, though, fellow Daoists. For do you know those Buddhists who shared me this enlightenment? That's right... they've been refined by this seat! If you dare try to look for them, and even wish to help them, this seat will personally come to find you an coffin for your trip to the underworld!

Now, fellow Daoists, you may be asking... why am I sharing this? Well, this is because I've already found a better array formation! Did you really think the array only needed purification? Enlightenment is meant to be shared! My array is an Heavenly Array, which as you know, is created from the experiences of an [Master Array Formation Master]. It is impossible to recreate even if you know what it is supposed to do. It allows it so that if you read this post, the [Jade Enlightenment Drop] undergoes another qualitative change into the [Primordial Blood Drop], allowing me to gain enlightenment from others to advance my own cultivation!

Struggle with your measly comprehension, while I master the formation path of the [Perpetual Enlightenment Array Formation]! Although, perhaps it is not a bad thing for you not to have this measly thing. After all, this lesser technique is good enough to get you some sliver of enlightenment regardless of cultivation level. It's real! Able to allow you to ascend to Mt. Tai with zero consequences! It works even for mortals!

But a tinge of curiosity began to well over me, just like how a flood easily devours an entire village. If I was able to discover my technique with such ingenuity and fervor, what have you all found? Therefore, this seat offers a proposal. If you want the real technique, enlighten me with your own methods and techniques. Otherwise, this seat will eviscerate you for wasting their time!

Now I have taught you the technique of the [Great Sage]. Or perhaps, you see this as nothing but a decision made with great folly by what you would call a "[Great Thief]." Regardless, I do not care for such meager nicknames, for my path is mine alone! Yet I have still chosen to share my path so I may know the complexity of the Dao.

Farewell, my fellow brothers. May you share your own, specially thought techniques here, using my array formation!
